The Rockstar Ramblings: Cranium Hall of Fame

The past weekend Axl and the new Guns N Roses rolled into New York for a couple surprise shows. Going on late, and then partying for, as Axl was quoted, “As long as it takes”, it is clear Rose hasn’t changed much from the Use Your Illusion days. However, I was quite shocked to see Axl rocking the Fedora hat with the bandana, a bold move few can pull off. Add in the trademark oversized aviator shades and Axl becomes a first ballot inductee for the Cranium Accessories Hall of Fame, joining Bret Michaels and Hulk Hogan (first time ballot inductees in the bandana category)… More...

Sebastian Bach Hoping To Release 2CDs And A DVD

Former Skid Row frontman and actor, Sebastian Bach has posted the following message online regarding his plans for the future:

"My plan in 2009 is to release two CDs if possible. One will be the (country) CD I am working on with Jeffrey Steele and Vicky McGehee, the team that brought you 'Battle With The Bottle'. The other CD will be a straight-up, hard ass rocker, the follow up to Angel Down. I plan on writing this record with my band, Roy Z hopefully and definitely Jamey Jasta of the band HATEBREED. Jamey and I are getting together this month to record some demos. I am not going to make a Hatebreed record. I am going to work on material with Jamey that will be heavy and anthemic but still make sense next to the other CDs I have done.

"I am also planning on releasing a new DVD in 2009. Can't go into the details quite yet, but there will be more hi-quality live DVD material coming your way this year, a la Roadrage. Looks like I will be starting work on the new DVD this month.

"Don't get confused by me doing a 'country' album and a 'rock' album at the same time. I have always hated labels. What I have learned over my lifetime is, I don't make decisions for my voice, my voice makes decisions for me. I have to get out of the way of my own voice so it can be heard loud and clear. My only objective in making CDs is to make them 'good'. Hopefully these two new CDs will fall into this category!

"All the best and hope to see you on the road again sometime soon!"

Sebastian Bach To Release A Country Album

Sebastian Bach has posted the following message online:

"Greetings from Nashville, Tennessee! We have been completely ensconced in the studio here for the last week, woodshedding in a big way, writing and demoing our asses off. I am happy to say that the writing team of Jeffrey Steele, Vicky McGehee, and myself, the team that brought you 'Battle With The Bottle', have been been locked in Jeffrey's studio, with our intention being to come up with a full album sometime in the near future.

"Since the ending of Gone Country 2, we now have between 10 and 15 songs 'under construction,' and we will not stop writing/demoing until we all feel we have a killer record. We all love the song 'Battle With The Bottle', but that is only the beginning. We are in the midst of assembling a whole new team down here in Nashville that will be able to bring a song to the radio, which we did not have at the time of filming Gone Country 2. More...

Sebastian Bach Nixes Velvet Revolver Rumors

Billboard.com reports: Sebastian Bach has plenty of musical activity on his plate -- but joining Velvet Revolver is not part of the mix.

The former Skid Row singer, who was among the early names rumored to be taking Scott Weiland's place, told Billboard.com that his close friendship with Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose -- who sang on three tracks on Bach's 2007 solo album, "Angel Down" -- and a focus on his own music would making joining Velvet Revolver "awkward" at best.

But he did confirm that Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash did contact him "out of the blue ... to talk to me about working together, but it was not Velvet Revolver. It was a completely different project, and I can't tell you what it is 'cause it's mind-blowing, but I've been sworn to secrecy on that. But nothing's happening right now with me and him."

Forbidden and Sebastian Bach Drop off TMT Festival

Upstate New York's TMT festival has been temporarily postponed. The organizors have issued the following update:

"Due to an unagreeable situation that has arisen with the venue, we are forced to postpone - TEMPORARILY this event. We are currently spending every waking moment searching for a replacement venue that will satisfy both our needs and please all of the bands and fans. The lack of basic cooperation on the part of the venue is what has prompted this decision. We tried in vain to make every effort necessary, but in the end - they failed us."

"There will be two lineup changes - Forbidden had a problem between management and booking, they decided to play another gig that weekend. Metal Mike contacted us when Sebastian Bach decided to go on tour, this tour conflicted with the concert date. We wish both bands good luck in their endeavors."

Sebastian Bach Denies Velvet Revolver Rumours

Former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach says he isn't in any hurry to join rock supergroup Velvet Revolver.

In an interview with on the The Buckethead Show on American radio station Tampa 98 Rock yesterday, the singer said he would find it "really awkward" joining VR.

"I've talked to Slash recently and I think it'd be really awkward for me to join that band," said bach. "Number one, my new record, Angel Down, I like it more than Velvet Revolver records. That's just being totally honest. I love Guns N' Roses' material, but I've got my own old songs - Skid Row - so for me, it would all depend on music. I wouldn't just join the band just to join the band."

However, Bach's not totally ruling out ever stepping into departed frontman Scott Weiland's shoes... Well, maybe not. More...

Sebastian Bach Is Finally "Canadian"

The following report is courtesy of ChartAttack.com:

Canadian metalheads have always laid claim to SEBASTIAN BACH, but the Canadian government has never accepted the singer as one of our own until now. For the first time in his 20-year career, Bach is Cancon-approved. Music from his new Angel Down album officially qualifies as Canadian content, according to the Canadian Radio-television And Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).

The former SKID ROW frontman is ecstatic about the development, even if he's a wee bit confused on Canadian bureaucracy, personifying a regulation ("Cancon") and not the CRTC as the official body recognizing his album as Canadian content.

"For 20 years I've been waiting for this," he says soon after hearing the news. "I'm from Peterborough and for Cancon to finally make me a Canadian artist is very heavy to me and it's incredible."

According to the CRTC website, a musical selection is judged on its Canadian content in four ways: music, artist, production and lyrics. If two of those areas are wholly Canadian, then the music can qualify as Cancon.

Bach has been trying to figure out these regulations for quite a while, sometimes with amusing results.

"It did frustrate me for years," he admits. "And I can remember one day, in the last five years, I was in Canada and I was Googling what it takes to become a Cancon artist.

"And I found this thing, I think it was on Cbc.com, The History Of Cancon. So I'm watching these video clips and the very last clip is an interview with the head of Cancon [Bach is likely referring to someone from the CRTC] in Ottawa, sitting at her desk and on the wall behind her is a painting by my dad [visual artist David Bierk]. Oh my God! One of my dad's paintings is behind her and she's explaining what is Cancon. I almost fell down when I realized that the big painting on the wall is done by Sebastian Bach's father.

"I was like, 'You people need to figure this out. There's no way the stain on my daddy's pants can't be Canadian when his painting's on the wall of the Cancon offices.'"

Sebastian Bach Talks Vocal Style And More

Mark Carras of Rock My Monkey recently conducted an interview with former SKID ROW vocalist Sebastian Bach. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Rock My Monkey: One thing that I did notice on this CD ["Angel Down"] is that you're using your higher octaves more than you have in a long time.

Sebastian Bach: Yeah. That's true.

Rock My Monkey: What was the reason behind that?

Sebastian Bach: That's very, very true. One thing, I did a play, "Jesus Christ Superstar" in 2002 that really got me screaming high again. It felt so good that I really said to myself "I'm always going to sing like this, only because I can.' You know what I mean? (laughs) And why not? So I said, "My next record, man, I'm going to scream like 'Slave To The Grind'. I'm going to try to sing like that first SKID ROW album, that really high style." And a lot of singers came out that were singing in that style that are starting to make it cool again. One guy is AFI, Davey Chaos, and-there's a lot-is that his name? Davey Havok, sorry. (both laugh)

Rock My Monkey: Havoc, chaos.

Sebastian Bach: (laughs) A lot of these high singers were coming out. The thing is when I recorded most of the vocals for "Angel Down", I was coming right off the GUNS N' ROSES tour. We did a couple weeks of shows with GUNS N' ROSES in Europe and then flew, we flew straight from Vienna, Austria. We did a festival with TOOL and GUNS N' ROSES all in the same day. It was an amazing festival. Then I got right on a plane and we flew right to L.A. from Vienna, and started recording right when we got there. And so my voice on the record is really high on the record on some of the songs because I was screaming with Axl Rose every night, and doing my set, and then doing my set and then "My Michelle". And I can remember coming in to do the vocals for "Angel Down", and my voice was so fucking high. Like really high! And it was hard to get it to go low. Like the last song, "Falling Into You", is quite low, the verses, and I was so used to singing high that that was one of the hardest ones for me to nail, because my voice was really, really, really high when I was singing the album. And "You Don't Understand" — I'm glad you mentioned that one. Because one thing I definitely concentrated on that song was to do it clean, and that's very challenging to sing really clean and pure for a guy my age. (laughs) So I really concentrated on that song, making it really pure and clean, and I love how it turned out. I love that song, too. I'm glad you dig it.

Rock My Monkey: Other than getting you to do "Back In The Saddle", what do you think Roy Z's brought to the CD as a producer that would not have been there otherwise?

Sebastian Bach: He brought one thing that was totally essential, and he really made the album a better album. And I'll tell you why. Because as you said, my band is a great metal band, but they are real metal players. Like, Steve DiGiorgio plays bass on the record. He plays a fretless bass throughout the whole record, and he's one of the world's best heavy metal bass players. And to have him on my record is such an honor, and he did such a great job. Blows me away. But here's the deal. We had songs like "Negative Light". I wrote that with Steve. "Take It Down With Me", I wrote that with Steve. Metal Mike, I had "American Metalhead". Johnny had "Stuck Inside". We had "Angel Down", because I had that from Adam Albright. What I'm trying to say, all the songs I'm mentioning are fucking all super-metal songs. And Roy said, "Dude, this is great, but you know what you need?" I go, "What?" He says, "You need straight-up rock." And I didn't really know what he meant, because I'm the artist. That's why you get a producer. So he's like, "Let me fucking show you some shit." Then he plays me the riff to "Love Is A Bitchslap", which is (imitates guitar riff). It's just fun. It's not like "Negative Light", which is so metal. So what he did was he made the record more balanced. He balanced it out, which was very important. It was his idea to do "Back In The Saddle", which I never would have thought of. It was his idea to add more straight-up rock like "Love Is A Bitchslap", which is actually the first single. Rock and roll should always be fun, you know? And that's what he brought to the table. A real fun, straight-up rock vibe. That's what he did.
