Latest Redemption News
Below is our complete Redemption news coverage, including columns and articles pertaining to the band. Some articles listed may be indirectly related, such as side projects of the band members, etc.
Note: We began associating news directly with bands in late 2003. Therefore, earlier band news may not be listed on this page.
Redemption's sixth album, "The Art of Loss," has been completed and will be released early in 2016 by Metal Blade records.
Featuring guest performances from a number of legendary musicians, the CD's nine tracks contain over 70 minutes of Redemption's unique blend of passion, melody, aggression and complexity.
Los Angeles-based Redemption is helmed by Nick van Dyk (guitars, keyboards), and includes renowned prog vocalist Ray Alder (Fates Warning, Engine), bassist Sean Andrews, and drummer Chris Quirarte, as well as guitarist Bernie Versailles, who is presently on an indefinite medical leave of absence from the band.
The band recruited several of the finest guitarists in metal to complement van Dyk's playing. "We're fortunate to have worked with a number of amazing musicians," begins van Dyk. "To start with, I'm extremely proud to announce that Chris Poland has lent his immense talent as a special guest on this record, contributing his unique playing on the majority of the songs and elevating our music into extremely interesting territory while calling to mind his work in his previous bands, who need not be named. Additionally, we are fortunate enough to have mind-blowing guest performances from Marty Friedman, Chris Broderick and Simone Mularoni, all of whom are amazing guitarists who add so much to this record."
The high-octane track "Thirty Silver" features Poland, Friedman and Broderick in the same song - something that will be a special treat for fans of these world-class players.
In addition, Redemption's cover of The Who's classic "Love Reign o'er Me" features a vocal duet between Alder and guest vocalist John Bush. "The combination of Ray's rich melodic voice and John's go-for-broke passion on this track really makes it special," explains van Dyk. "Daltrey's performance on the original is one of the most iconic vocal performances in the history of rock music and John does it great justice." More...
Los Angeles based progressive metal act Redemption has completed work on the new album and follow up to 2011's "This Mortal Coil." The band has signed on to Metal Blade Records for the reelase.
Redemption is helmed by Nick van Dyk (guitars, keyboards), and includes legendary prog vocalist Ray Alder (Fates Warning, Engine), bassist Sean Andrew and drummer Chris Quirarte, as well as guitarist Bernie Versailles, who is presently on a medical leave of absence from the band.
Nick van Dyk commented on signing with Metal Blade: "We are incredibly fired up to join the Metal Blade family. Brian and his team have been friends for years and many of them have been supporters of the band from early days, and the influence of Brian and his label on the history of heavy music is indelible. We're working with friends who are passionate about the music and who are and some of the best in the world at what they do - Redemption is really excited about our collaborations to come!" More...
Following the news of Bernie Versailles' illness, a get well fund has been established in part by Juan Garcia (Agent Steel/Abattoir) for the Redemption/Agent Steel guitarist and his family to offset compounding medical bills. Ten days ago, the news broke that Versailles suffered an aneurysm and was in a coma.
The launch page reads: "On the morning October 5, 2014; Bernie Versailles suffered an aneurysm and was rushed to the emergency room for an operation. Many of you may know, and love Bernie as family, a friend, or as a fan of his amazing talented guitar playing, songwriting, and musical endeavors with Agent Steel, Engine, Redemption, and many other projects. Bernie is a fighter and is prone to overcoming odds. His personality and soul is unmatched and his marks on people's lives is undeniable.
"Every day he is in the hospital is very costly. This page was created to assist his family, Soma and his young children Sevina and Apollo with the medical bills that are accruing. Every dollar and prayer helps a very loved soul who has given his heart and talent to the world. Thank you all so much. Let's assist Bernie Versailles in his rehabilitation and making a full recovery."

According to Arizona punk act We Steal Copper, Redemption/Agent Steel guitartist Bernie Versailles has apparently suffered an aneurysm and is current in a coma. As of yet, there has been no official press statement from either the Versailles family or Redemption.
The post on We Steal Copper's Facebook pages as of last night reads: "Please keep our best friend & camera man, Bernie Versailles, in your prayers. He is in a coma right now after suffering an anyerism. Some of you know him from our Beer Pong video shoot. Some of you may know him as the guitarist of Agent Steel. We know & love him like family. Either way he has been with us since the beginning and he and his family need all the positive energy. Thank u guys!"
This morning, the band posted the following statement online from Agent Steel bassist Michael Zaputil:
"Michael here. First off, I want to thank all of you. I want to thank Bernie's and my forever brothers in the Agent Steel family, Juan, Karlos, Rick, and Chuck. I also want to thank our brothers in the thrash community who have expressed their concerns. I love you all more than I could express, it is exactly how we pulled together in the first place and took the world as our own back when it mattered. But I have to get this off my chest. It isn't fair. Bernie and I joined Agent Steel together in late 1985. He was 18, I was 26. Before that as a teenager, he devoted himself to being the best musician possible, but he was also a gifted natural. Clean living. Dedicated. In contrast, I on the other hand from the late '70s through the '80s was Sid Vicious and Kurt Cobain combined. I did enough blow and heroin to keep the Afghan and South American drug cartels in business for years, and trust me, that is no exaggeration. Along with being a heavy drinker and smoker. Still smoking actually. At that time, I considered myself a Christian, talk about a walking contradiction.
"Here is a guy that never abused his physical body though, took his music totally seriously, and then this. Just one of many things nowadays that make no sense to me. I happen to know that there are enough of us sending positive prayer and energy to see him through this. It will happen, I will not accept this otherwise. He and I have been through things together you wouldn't believe. Going on thirty years. Way too much to get stopped in our tracks now, we have much work to do. And I'm sorry I didn't respond to some of you earlier, when I get hit with something like this, I tend to pull away and go into my shell. I'm fucked up that way. But bless you all...." More...

While the rest of the world went to work or whatever it is they normally would do on a Friday, the contingent of the lovers of loud and fast music down on Peachtree St in Atlanta were being awesome. The day that many metal fans were waiting for since Day Two of the 2011 festival had finally come around -- Day One of the 2012 festival had arrived, bringing with it headliners Epica and support bands Sinbreed, Kingcrow, Amaranthe, Serenity, Primordial, and Redemption. The night before, Nightwish and Kamelot had thrilled in the same venue.
With several levels of ticket options available to attendees, gold badge attendees were given early access to the festival's merchandise room. Like the gaping maw of a hungry beast, the doors to the merchandise room were opened at noon and soon swallowed absurd amounts of money with little effort from the wallets of attendees. For attendees who found the dilemma of "I just need ONE more CD," without having the money for it, there was an ATM around the hall so that "one more" could then turn into "ten more" without a worry. The ProgPower USA festival is approaching its thirteenth year, but if you were to look at the number of international bands who have made the Atlanta-based festival the site of their US debut, you would find that number even more impressive – a solid eighty-two. That number includes bands such as Nightwish, Blind Guardian, Edguy, Gamma Ray, Pagan’s Mind, Circus Maximus, Stratovarius, Riverside, and more. The US is not known for heavy metal festivals – at least not of the level that Europe is known for, with Wacken, Hellfest, and all sorts of other open-airs. In the US, ProgPower is the longest-running and most well-known of the handful of festivals we do have. Moreover, as evidenced by the title, this is a pointedly progressive- and power- metal themed festival, with performances by an average of 14-16 bands over several days.
Last year, I had the privilege of attending the festival and contributed a series of write-ups about each of the days afterwards. The experience was much like a Comic-Con or anime convention, only geared around highly amplified sound aimed at rattling my brain and rocking my soul. It was like another world altogether, given that everyone I interacted with on that three-day stretch could talk for hours on end about the juxtaposition of synthesizer and guitar solos with no reservations. It felt like a family reunion. More...

We've been buried in rehearsals for our upcoming European dates and we're very excited to be playing some material from the new CD that we think is going to go over really well live. Dating back to the production of the record, we've been on a crazy schedule to make sure that our fans can actually get the CD before our shows, so we're really excited that it's finally out!"

ProgPower USA XIII is shaping up to be the event of the year in the United States in 2012. The current lineup for each day is as follows:
Symphony X (Headliner)
Redemption, the U.S. progressive metal band featuring in its ranks guitarist/songwriter Nick van Dyk and legendary Fates Warning vocalist Ray Alder, is about to release a 5th studio album titled "This Mortal Coil." The album is set for release on October 11th, 2011 in North America via InsideOutMusic (September 26th in Europe).
The band is now launching a first promotional song sample for the release by making the track "Noonday Devil" available for streaming ("Like" required) via Facebook. Nick van Dyk comments on the song "Noonday Devil" as follows:
"The 'Noonday Devil', as a concept, is about doubt. Are my efforts worth it? What's the point of going on in the face of this adversity? Is there any meaning to my struggle or is this just pointless? These whispers of desperation can creep into all of us. As part of 'This Mortal Coil', all of which represents reflections on morality, 'Noonday Devil' is the point at which we decide to dig in and kick this specter of doubt in the teeth. It's one of the most in-your -face songs we've ever done, with musical energy that matches the determination in the lyrics."

Redemption, which features in its ranks guitarist/songwriter Nick van Dyk and Fates Warning vocalist Ray Alder, has announced that the band's 5th studio album release and follow-up to "Snowfall On Judgment Day" will be entitled "This Mortal Coil." The new album is to be released October 11th, 2011 in North America and on September 26th, 2011 in Europe and via InsideOut Music.
The band recorded and mixed "This Mortal Coil" with producer Neil Kernon (Queensryche, Nevermore, Kansas, etc.). The album's artwork, available for viewing below, was created by
acclaimed artist and longtime band collaborator Travis Smith.
Redemption's Nick van Dyk checked in commenting on the album as follows:
"I'm extremely pleased to announce that work on 'This Mortal Coil' has been completed.
It was a pleasure to work with Neil Kernon during the production, although I dare say we had more challenges and curve-balls in this process than either of us is accustomed to. Nonetheless we overcame everything in our path, from internet failures to lightning strikes, and since one of the themes of this CD is essentially overcoming adversity, the production process served as a bit of a metaphor for the whole concept!
"The new CD continues our creative effort to combine heaviness with melody -- fusing those disparate elements has always been part of Redemption's sound, along with an element that I have called emotional urgency, which we've maintained here. All in all, it sounds like Redemption -- although importantly I think it's by far our best-sounding record, owing to the work of Neil Kernon and the mastering of Alan Douches."
And Van Dyk adds regarding the artwork:
"We have worked once again with the incredibly talented Travis Smith on our art; we work very well together and he has a proven knack for bringing my concepts to life visually."
The 2011 edition of the ProgPower Europe festival will take place in the Netherlands from September 30th - October 2nd. Additional details on the festival are available here. The currently announced lineup is as follows:
Friday September 30
Saturday October 1
Long Distance Calling
Sunday October 2
California's Redemption has checked in with the following announcement about finishing the band's upcoming new album:
"This Mortal Coil is finished!
"I'm pleased to announce that after what can only be described as a very challenging production experience that threw every possible curve ball at us, we have finished the record. Fortunately Neil kept a steady hand at the tiller through rough waters but it really tested us all: computer failures, internet failures, missing files, strange 'ghost in the machine' type elements, scheduling challenges, lightning strikes (I'm not kidding), etc.
"At any rate, the masters are in the hands of the label. Now we just wait for it to be released! Hope you all enjoy it."
California based act Redemption has issued the following update about performing European shows:
"Hello everyone! We have been very, very busy working on new material -- so busy, in fact, that we haven't really had time to comment on the brief release about our upcoming headlining performance at ProgPower Europe this coming October. It's a long way off, but we are very excited to be able to perform for our European fans and play material not just from Snowfall but also from our upcoming release, This Mortal Coil.
"I'm extremely excited to confirm that in addition to ProgPower Europe, we'll be playing several other dates so we will finally have the opportunity to perform in several countries in Europe, where we know our fans are awesome! The dates, which are still being finalized, are as follows:
1 Oct - London, UK, The Underworld
2 Oct - Baarlo, The Netherlands, Progpower Europe
4 Oct - Basel, Switzerland, z-7
5 Oct - TBA
7 Oct - Essen, Germany, Turock
8 Oct - Copehnagen, Denmark, Denmark Rock Festival
"Again, we can't wait to get over there and perform for you. We appreciate your patience!! And, as always, your interest and support."
California's Redemption has checked in with the following update about the band's upcoming album:
"Hello everyone. Time for a long overdue update on a few things! So sit down with this when you’ve got a few minutes .... it's an extensive update! First off, we are hard at work in pre-production for our upcoming fifth studio CD, which carries the working title of This Mortal Coil. The band was really happy with Snowfall on Judgment Day and so when it came time to put together new material, with our own expectations for ourselves always on the rise, we gave a lot of thought to how to deliver the goods and step up our game yet again.
"We have worked well with some excellent producers in the past and they have put their mark on our sound, especially Tommy Newton with whom we did two records and who we tried to involve early enough in the production process to help shape the records. But even with Tommy, most of the involvement came after we were finished with songs.
"For this record, I thought we could bring in an outside producer very early on. Someone to help shape the music and raise the bar for us, challenging our ideas and getting the best from the band. I knew I wanted somebody with a depth of experience that reflected the many things Redemption pursues in its music: melodic but heavy; intricate and complex when called for, but accessible; a bit of virtuosity but always in the service of the song. This is a tall order, when you think about it. We would need a producer, ideally, who had extensive experience in pop music but also maybe jazz fusion, had worked with somebody like Kansas, had worked with somebody like Nevermore, had extensive experience in heavy technical music (like, say, Spiral Architect or even somebody like Nile) and hopefully also had particular domain expertise in prog metal (maybe someone like Queensryche).
"Fortunately, such a producer exists! I am delighted to announce that we will be working on This Mortal Coil with Neil Kernon, whose extensive CV includes all of those bands. He has immense experience in song craft, creating compelling intricate music across a variety of genres. It's a great fit for what we are looking for right now. He is, simply put, a legendary producer and we are really fired up to work with him. More...
California's Redemption has issued the following update about working on a new album:
"Hello folks, and sorry for the long silence from us. It's been a very busy summer for us away from Redemption, particularly for Ray who as most of you surely know did a reunion tour with the Parallels lineup of Fates Warning to commemorate the 20th anniversary of that fantastic release.
"I (Nick) remain in complete remission with no trace of the disease that I announced publicly about a year ago. I remain on three powerful medications to ensure that the cancer does not return. Of the five original active lesions in my bones, none are active for cancer and one of them has resolved (i.e. been completely repaired with new bone). The other four are in the process of being repaired and that is the next big milestone. Patience is required but I believe they will get there. If that happens, it is a good sign that I am well down the road to being cured (according to the very aggressive doctor to whom I entrust my care). However I must remain on these medicines for two more years. They have many unpleasant side effects but I am resolved to stick with the program and beat 'incurable' blood cancer. Thank you all very much for your prayers, positive vibes and words of support -- they mean a lot. More...
California's Redemption has issued the following statement regarding the passing of Ronnie James Dio today:
"I lost a musical hero today, and the news has hit me harder than I thought it would. Ronnie James Dio was one of the first concerts I saw, and Holy Diver one of the first records I bought once I started liking this thing called 'heavy metal.' Over the years, I have seen him perform more than anyone else (with the exception of my friends in Dream Theater, given our tour together!) and the past several times I've seen him with Black Sabbath have been truly phenomenal.
"I was hoping that Ronnie would be able to perform a guest vocal on a future Redemption CD, and the vocal line I had in mind for him was an expression of triumph over cancer. Obviously, this takes on a horrible irony now. And given my own diagnosis, obviously I'm particularly attuned to what Ronnie endured. My thoughts and prayers go out to Ronnie's family and friends. The world of heavy metal has lost its voice. Rest in peace, Ronnie."
