Sunday Old School: Unleashed

There are some countries where heavy metal is very popular, then there are countries which don't just appreciate heavy music, they contribute to it... heavily. Many fans of the genre will tell you that it was born in England but Germany is its spiritual home, though Scandinavia is where it's very welcome to stay. Indeed, it's not uncommon to see metal bands reach high chart positions in Finland and their neighbours to the west, Sweden, are almost as welcoming, spawning many amazing and important bands of their own, as well as the famous Swedish death metal sound. This tone is often credited as the Gothenburg sound but many of these groups came from the capital city of Stockholm, including today's band, Unleashed.

Unleashed was founded in 1989 by singing bassist, Johnny Hedlund, who had only just been fired from Nihilist, the band that was to become Entombed. He was joined in his endeavour by drummer Anders Schultz and guitarists Robert Sennebäck and Fredrik Lindgren. The former was replaced by Tomas Måsgard pretty quickly and the group set about making their mark by recording the demos, "Revenge" and "Utter Dark." The tapes soon found their way to German label Century Media, who snapped up the band almost immediately, resulting in their 1991 debut full length, "Where No Life Dwells." The record was hailed instantly as a death metal classic and remains one of the most popular albums to emerge from the Swedish metal scene to this day, which helped propel the band's popularity massively, allowing them to tour Europe and the United States with fellow death metal favouites, Morbid Angel. Unleashed Reveals "Dawn Of The Nine" Artwork

Unleashed today unveils the artwork for twelfth studio album "Dawn Of The Nine," which was crafted by Pär Olofsson.

"Dawn Of The Nine" will see official release on April 24th, 2015 via Nuclear Blast. The band also comments:

“The artwork represents the continuation of our previous album, which ended with 'The Great Battle of Odalheim.' The battle took place at Uppsala fields in Sweden, and you can clearly see the 'kings graves' at the cover art work which is present at Uppsala also in the future. You can also see the bombed out church in the far distance. Then off course, you see the place of Blot in the front and the rune stone with the runic symbol of courage of the new dawn.”

Unleashed Finishes New Album

Swedish Viking death metal outfit Unleashed just finished recording the follow-up to the "Odalheim" album. The title of the album is still a secret but according to Nuclear Blast, fans should be prepared for another classic record.

The forthcoming release was recorded by producer and guitar player Fredrik Folkare in his own Chrome Studios in Stockholm, Sweden. Frontman Johnny Hedlund states:

“Warriors!!! Unleashed are now done mastering and we now have the finished recording in our hands. Fredrik has once again done a tremendous job in the studio and I would say this is our best produced album to date. We are very much looking forward to the release date and to play some of the songs live.”

Nuclear Blast also comments: "With their blend of melody and brutality, Unleashed are credited as the founders of the Viking Death Metal movement from their inception back in 1989. Twenty six years later and their riffs are still pure shrapnel and their choruses just as epic - melting uncompromising brutality with anthemic odes to Odin. Unleashed's latest record 'Odalheim' was released in April 2012 via Nuclear Blast."
