Latest Avantasia News
Below is our complete Avantasia news coverage, including columns and articles pertaining to the band. Some articles listed may be indirectly related, such as side projects of the band members, etc.
Avantasia mastermind Tobias Sammet announced the next special guest for the forthcoming LP "The Mystery of Time," this time its Pretty Maids vocalist Ronnie Atkins. The announcement reads as follows:
"After Biff Byford (Saxon), Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween, Unisonic), Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon, ex-Vengeance), Bruce Kulick (Grand Funk Railroad, ex-KISS, ex-Meat Loaf) and the German Filmorchestra Babelsberg another participent can now be announced: It's Pretty Maids vocalist Ronnie Atkins who will sing a role on the new Avantasia Metal Opera "The Mystery Of Time" (out in March 2013)."
Tobias commented on the addition of Atkins: "I have been a huge Pretty Maids fan since I was a teenager. I already asked Ronnie to be on the Metal Opera in 1999, but he was busy back then. Last year I saw Pretty Maids live, and they were a steam train on stage, unbelievable. After the show we met and Ronnie was a great guy. Finally after 13 years, I am really proud to have him on the new Avantasia album. And his kick-ass performance leaves no doubt: It was a great decision to ask him!" More...
Avantasia founder Tobias Sammet has announced the next guest on the band's upcoming CD will be Arjen A. Lucassen (Ayreon, ex-Vengeance). Sammet comments:
"To me he used to be what John D. Rockerduck is to Scrooge McDuck: An adamant long time rival; in our case when it comes to producing Rock Operas. Well, if you can't beat your enemy make him your ally! And so I opened the door and literally invited pestilence into my world, ha!
"Seriously, the truth is that the 'pestilence' I'm talking about is really one of the nicest, coolest and loveliest plagues I've ever come to know, an ambitious artist through and through and a real great guitar player. So, having just come back from a shopping tour in 2912 - where apparently he found himself a brand new pair of bad-ass pants & boots - he went into the studio to record some additional lead guitar for the forthcoming Avantasia album 'The Mystery Of Time:' Ayreon mastermind Arjen Anthony Lucassen."
In March 2013 the new Avantasia Rock Opera "The Mystery Of Time" will be released on CD and vinyl. The album is going to feature guest stars such as Biff Byford (Saxon), Michael Kiske (Unisonic, ex-Helloween), Bruce Kulick (ex-Kiss, ex-Meat Loaf), Russell Gilbrook (Uriah Heep), Arjen A. Lucassen (Ayreon, ex-Vengeance) and the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg. More musicians will be announced soon. More...
Avantasia, the brainchild of Edguy frontman Tobias Sammet, posted a new studio report on the recording of the new LP "The Mystery of Time." The album is set to drop in March of 2013. In the video, the band works with a symphony orchestra and reveals the first sounds of the album, featuring former Helloween singer Michael Kiske (Unisonic).

American thrash metal legends Slayer has been confirmed as the third and final headliner for next year's edition of the Bloodstock Open Air festival in Derbyshire, England. The event will take place at Catton Park from August 8 - 11th and will also be headlined by King Diamond and Lamb of God. A statement from Slayer guitarist Kerry King reads: "Can't wait to hit the stage at Bloodstock! Metal Festival in England? Fuck yes!! It's going to be hell on earth and I'm looking forward to having a party with all my British friends."
The organisers of the festival added: "We are thrilled to announce that seminal thrash metal legends, SLAYER are confirmed as the third and final headliner for Bloodstock 2013. The Californian four-piece will close the Ronnie James Dio stage on Sunday night at Catton Park, bringing their face-melting, monster riffs to the metal hordes."

Tobias Sammet has issued the following announcement about the upcoming new Avantasia album:
"Today we have breathtaking news for all AVANTASIANS: The new album will be called 'AVANTASIA - THE MYSTERY OF TIME,' and as previously reported is set for release in March.
"Immediately after the release of this new Metal Opera, based on a story written by Tobias Sammet, the band will embark on a full-fledged indoor-tour, during which the band and special guests will bring the epic undertaking to the stage. Check the official website for more."
It was also previously announced that guitarist Bruce Kulick will make a guest appearance on "The Mystery of Time," and the album is expected out in March, 2013.
To rock fans and musicians alike Bruce Kulick made himself a name as the guitarist of Meat Loaf during the "Bat Out Of Hell" tour in 1978. After that he also joined Michael Bolton, but it wasn't until the mid eighties that he gained worldwide notoriety by joining Kiss during the unmasked era for a relationship that was to last twelve years. In those years he put his lead guitar stamp on hits such as "Crazy, Crazy Nights" and "God Gave Rock'n Roll To You."
Bruce has just been in the studio to record some lead guitar tracks for the forthcoming Rock Opera of Tobias Sammet‘s Avantasia project, due out in March 2013. Bruce had already appeared on the previous Avantasia album while Tobias sang guest vocals on Bruce‘s last solo album “BK3,“ which featured guests such as Gene Simmons of KISS and Steve Lukather of Toto.
Tobias says: “Bruce and I have been friends for some years now, he is a lovely person and an amazing guitarist. It was really obvious I would ask him to come on-board for Avantasia once again. Two of the tracks he plays on are more than 10 minutes long, and they include screaming and whammy-bar driven stuff as well as anthemic Meat Loafish type melodies. I love it because it's got such an old school quality, and Bruce just has it! Class act!“
Avantasia will also hit the stages again in April 2013, right after the release of the new CD.
Tobias' tour management is currently working on a headlining indoor tour for Avantasia in April. The group will also play a few chosen summer festivals, and a South American and Asian tour is planned for late summer.
Avantasia, which entered the studio back in October, has now announced an upcoming headlining tour kicking off in April, 2013. The trek is also slated to include summer festivals and shows in South America and Asia. Tobias Sammet comments:
"I know I once said we weren't gonna do it again, but then I don‘t see a reason to let this die. I wanna put on the biggest thing you have ever seen, I wanna bring more vocalists, play longer shows, and just make it a giant Rock Opera. I love to headline festivals, you run over people in 90 minutes and kick ass. But I also like to do our own Avantasia indoor tour because we can make it much more Avantasia oriented and play almost three hours without caring about anything else but Avantasia.
"So we said, we have to do a giant indoor tour as well, and it's going to happen in April. I am so looking forward to it. The stage designer has just showed me his stage and light design, and it looks absolutely killer. It will be huge. 2013 will be a major year for Avantasia, and people don't have a clue how big things are actually going to be! I am very excited - the album will be amazingly epic, and the tour will be too!"
Tour dates will be announced soon through the Tobias Sammet official website.
Avantasia has posted a video update online about returning to the studio for a new album, which can be viewed below. The band also comments:
"Tobias is currently in the studio working with a legion of guest instrumentalists and vocalists on a new Avantasia album to be released in spring 2013. The album will once again be a Rock Opera based on a conceptual story very similar to the early Avantasia albums."
Tobias also stated, ""The new material sounds very fresh and new and yet you can hear the old classic Avantasia vibe on the album, it will be an enchanting fairytale again, far away from any musical trends. Our latest album was our most successful album of all time, but I guess it was only that successful because it came from the heart. That's the only proven remedy I wanna stick to. I tried to lay down any thought of expectations, but instead just do a completely unseasonable, unfashionable and even unreasonable piece of art. Anyway, I feel at home when I listen to those melodies, choirs and guitars. I just talked to Michi Kiske and he said that the stuff reminds him a lot of the old classic Avantasia material in the good old Keeper style. As a fan, now that sounds even exciting to me, so the circle shuts. For myself it's hard to describe the material in words, I had and have so many ideas that I had to restrain myself a little, otherwise the album would become too long, and I'm trying not to do a double album this time. However, I am really excited, and I just thought I'd let you know how excited I am. I'll try to give you more updates from now on." More...
Avantasia has issued the following announcement about working on a new album to see release next year:
"What many have recently been speculating about we're now happy to confirm. Tobias is indeed working on a new Avantasia epic that is planned to be released in spring 2013. Concept wise the album will be a classic Rock-Opera / Metal Opera. It's going to be a timeless fairytale, that despite its fantasy appeal, was inspired by happenings of our modern age and society. You‘ll find plenty of further details at our website in the near future.
"Originally Tobias wanted to lay Avantasia to rest after the release of its live DVD 'Flying Opera' in April 2011, which topped the charts in Germany, Austria and Sweden and went Top 10 all over Europe, respectively after its headliner appearance at Wacken Open Air 2011 in front of more than 100,000 fans."
About the surprising return of Avantasia, Tobias Sammet says: "Even though I love to record and tour with Edguy, I didn‘t foresee how much I need Avantasia when I decided to finish this chapter of my life in 2011. I didn't know if there would be another Avantasia album one day, but I didn‘t feel like doing it. After the worldwide success of the latest studio releases, an arena world tour that was sold out pretty much everywhere, collaborations with childhood heroes like Alice Cooper, Klaus Meine, Rudolf Schenker, Eric Singer of Kiss etc. I 'knew' that I had said everything I could possibly say in the name of Avantasia. But that's not what Avantasia is all about. I wanna create more great music, I wanna create more fantasy-worlds, the bigger and the more epic, the better. And listening to the material that I have created for this forthcoming chapter in the history of Avantasia, I know there is no way, I am not going to do it! I have got the feeling and the certainty, that this is absolutely meant to happen and to be! - Cheerz, Tobi."

Edguy/Advantasia vocalist Tobias Sammet was interviewed by Harmon Caldwell on Edguy's official website (Edguy.net). He talked about the writing process behind the band's forthcoming LP "Age of the Joker" (EU: 08/26/2011; NA: 09/13/2011).
When asked about the motivations for writing the LP's first single "Robin Hood," Sammet responded "Attila the Hun, Odin, the sons of Odin, Cinderella, Humpty Dumpty... I can hardly think of a more or less historically relevant swashbuckler who hasn't been the main topic in a song, sung by Heavy Metal men in furry loin cloths. Except from Robin Hood, maybe the story of Robin Hood is too complex, haha! I just thought it is so over-the-top, it embraces everything that Rock and Metal are all about. It's more Spinal Tap than Spinal Tap ever were."
Sammet also responded to the mixed criticism the band received on previous LP "Tinnitus Sanctus," stating "The fact that certain magazines bash whatever we do is no big news, we know what they'll write even before we enter the studio. As a matter of fact, we don‘t fit in their scheme, but down the line it really doesn't matter what some desk- or internet-hero writes. AGE OF THE JOKER seemingly has all our trademarks and is considered a back-to-the-roots album by some press guys, which theoretically could be a proof that we have our own signature sound which makes us proud, but nothing was forced. I also love TINNITUS SANCTUS, it is a great album, my favorite Edguy album to date. It's sad some people didn't understand it and I respect that. But this is not proof for inferior quality. What counts is that AGE OF THE JOKER is a great album, you know that, the EDGUYs know that, our producer Sascha Paeth knows that, and our fans will find out shortly. The rest of the world can kiss my ass!"

Avantasia has now posted two new tour videos online, which can be viewed below:
Avantasia has posted the following statement online, confirming earlier rumors of a live DVD release:
"Rumors keep circulating about a forthcoming AVANTASIA live DVD and now we can confirm they are true! [In February 2011] a double DVD and two-CD set [along with a box set featuring both the double DVD and two-CD set] will be out on Nuclear Blast Records (in Japan and East Asia on Avalon Marquee). The DVD is a documentary of the legendary 2008 world tour of AVANTASIA, when the band hit the road for the first time to write a new chapter in metal history; traveling around the world with a giant all-star ensemble to bring the metal opera on stage and play on three continents within a few days, crossing the dateline and eventually playing to a total of 400,000 people within only a few weeks. The first DVD contains a live concert with a running time of almost two hours featuring footage filmed at the headlining shows of Wacken Open Air (Germany) and Masters Of Rock (Czech Republic). On the second DVD there will be a movie, 'Around The World In 20 Days', that gives fans the opportunity to join AVANTASIA backstage and take a look at the surroundings and the thrill behind the scenes that go along with an extensive undertaking such as this. The DVD set will portray AVANTASIA 2008 when it all started."
Avantasia has now posted another tour video online, which can be viewed below. The band commented on the clip:
"Departing from snowy Scandinavia, we fly to Beijing, where we have about 5 hours to kill at the airport and spend them eating, drinking and shopping. Then we finally arrive in Tokyo! One of my favorite countries, Japan is super-modern and hyper-polite, which is a combination that strikes a nice chord with me along with the hustle & bustle. As ever, we find our adventures most amusing and make the best out of our time there, though way too short.
"My apologies for the blonde length-wise filming of the Tokyo Tower! And I hope you enjoy my toilet-musings; I always find those space-age toilets so fascinating. :-) Thank you to our Japanese friends for making our time there once again unforgettable!"
