Below is our complete Avantasia news coverage, including columns and articles pertaining to the band. Some articles listed may be indirectly related, such as side projects of the band members, etc.
Christmas is drawing near, and Tobias Sammet has got his Nutcracker suit on already! If you listen to the Tobias Sammet Rockshow on Radio Bob this coming December 9th you will get a world-exclusive pre-listening of the new Avantasia une.
On December 11th the single will also be digitally available from iTunes and other platforms officially. The nutcracker aka Tobi comments:
"'Mystery Of A Blood Red Rose' is a song I originally wrote with Meat Loaf in the back of my mind - but for some reason the collaboration didn't happen, so I did the song myself. The choirs alone took more than 40 hours to arrange and record - for a four minute song! That pretty much says it all. Anything worth doing is worth overdoing and 'More is more!' Have a great day!" The never ending stream of guest musicians on Avantasia's upcoming album continues as today Nuclear Blast reveals guitarist Bruce Kulick as the latest addition.
He‘s become part of rock history as the lead guitarist of Kiss, Michael Bolton, Meat Loaf, and Grand Funk Railroad. Like a bat out of hell he was back in the studio to record some lead guitars for the new Avanantasia release "Ghostlights."
Tobias Sammet comments: "I remember I was eleven years old when I had a Kiss 'Crazy Nights' poster on the wall, 20 years later Bruce asked me to co-write and lay down vocals for a song on his solo album 'BKIII' (highly recommended to check out), which was a great honor for me. Bruce is a great guy, a pro and an outstanding guitar player, he comes from a different background than me, which makes it even more exciting to have him on the 'Ghostlights' album (out January 2016 via Nuclear Blast)."
What do Geoff Tate, Dee Snider, Michael Kiske, Robert Mason, Jorn Lande, Bob Catley, Ronnie Atkins, Olli Hartmann and me have in common with Marco Hietala of Nightwish?
They'll all be on the new Avantasia album "Ghostlights" due out on January 29, 2016! Tobias Sammet had this to say about the latest addition to the album's lineup:
"About Marco: It was August 1997 and we were in Helsinki to mix the 'Vain Glory Opera' album of Edguy when someone played the band Tarot to me. That great band seemed to be some sort of a legend in Finland (in Germany Tarot were not really known at the time). A few years later a band called Nightwish had appeared on the map and were about to take the European metal world upside down. Edguy played a festival in England with Saxon and amongst others: Nightwish!
"I remember even though they had a great female vocalist how much I loved the rendition of Ozzy Osbourne's 'Crazy Train' that they did - if I remember correctly - which was sung by their bass player. You know, a lot of bass players are bass players because they wanna be in a band too; and there's only so much damage you can do to the sound of a band with just a bass. Sometimes they're only in the band because they talk enough to organize things or they have a day job to finance the first demo recordings, nice stage clothes, or sun glasses, but at the end of the day, most of them aren't taken seriously because… well, because they're bass players. :) And they're always suspicious... ;) More...
Fans in Europe and Asia have already had the pleasure to see the Danish rocker on stage with the metal opera - now the whole world is going to get their share of Pretty Maids' powerhouse Ronnie Atkins.
He will not only appear on the new Avantasia album 'Ghostlights,' he will also join the massive all-star lineup on stage around the globe during the "Ghostlights" world tour 2016. The European tour will start in March, with tour dates in other parts of the world to be announced soon.
"Ghostlights" will be out January 29, 2016 via Nuclear Blast. Singers who have been confirmed for the album are Michael Kiske, Jorn Lande, Geoff Tate, Dee Snider, and Bob Catley. More to be announced soon!
"Ghostlights" is due out on January 29, 2015 via Nuclear Blast Records. Avantasia's Tobias Sammet comments: "I've always been a fan of Twisted Sister and Dee Snider in particular. He is entertaining, flamboyant, energetic, loud, tongue in cheek, colourful and mean! When I was young, I remember that he was the kind of character that I wanted to be. A crossing between peacock, jackal and Bugs Bunny. I loved it! On "Ghostlights" Dee is gonna be a ghost, and what a ghost he is. Great performance. Dee, welcome to the Avantasia family!" More...
Avantasia's 7th studio album "Ghostlights" will be released via Nuclear Blast in early 2016. After revealing the return of Jorn Lande, another guest star can be announced - Operation: Mindcrime (former Queensryche) vocalist Geoff Tate.
This news may be met with a somewhat less enthusiastic response considering how Operation: Mindcrime's new album "The Key" is being received overall (reviewed here).
Avantasia's Tobias comments: "I am proud to announce a very special guest today: Mr. Geoff Tate! I have been fortunate enough to meet many amazing classic metal vocalists. Whenever we've talked about our influence as vocalists the name Geoff Tate was brought up.
"Throughout his incredible career of more than 30 years Geoff has constantly explored new territory as an artist and vocalist, while he has always managed to maintain this distinctive signature vocal sound that makes him stand out.
"His contribution sounds nothing but amazing, and you will immediately know why the man had such a huge impact on vocalists and fans around the globe! Enchanting, unique, amazing, progressive in the purest sense of the word! Thank you for joing the Avamtasoa family, Geoff Tate!"
Avantasia is currently working on a new album titled "Ghostlights" to see release next year. The band has now checked in with this update about regrouping with Jorn Lande:
"It is with great pleasure that I can announce the Beast From The North to join forces with Avantasia once again. The Striking Viking: Jorn Lande!
"We've just finished his vocal recordings and he sounds - what a surprise - KILLER! Jorn is a monster! It is with even greater pleasure to let you know that Jorn is gonna do the world tour next year, kicking off in March!
"Avantasia live - 3 hours every night, from the 'Metal Opera' to the new album 'Ghostlights.' We'll be an epic line up and we'll deliver an epic show. Check tour dates at our website and get your tickets before we sell out.| More...
The sequel to latest Avantasia album "The Mystery Of Time" (reviewed here) will be called "Ghostlights" and is scheduled to be released in early 2016. Tobias Sammet has now checked in with the following update:
"New Avantasia on vocals! On a rainy August night in an old haunted studio... Thunder & lightning outside, the devil inside... Avantasia!!! Material sounds majestic so far! Recording one of the singers for the new album & tour. The stars have lined up! Now, who is the beast behind the microphone? Ideas? let me know...
"Looking forward to album release in January & the live shows in March, 3 hrs every night. Metal Opera, Scarecrow, Ghostlights... everything!" More...
The original is back: Edguy frontman Tobias Sammet has returned to the studio to work on the new chapter of Avantasia.
The sequel to latest album "The Mystery Of Time" (2013) will be called "Ghostlights" and is scheduled to be released in early 2016. An EP/single is also planned to be released for this autumn, and in March 2016 a giant all-star ensemble will set off on the Ghostlights World Tour.
Tobias Sammet comments: "In the past months I've spent a lot of time in the studio, an odd recluse in the basement, secretly working obsessively on something that reads and feels and sounds like a new - very strong - chapter in the story of Avantasia. I must say Avantasia is a fantastic outlet for creativity, and it's truly inspiring to create a piece of music for so many great vocalists and instrumentalists.
"The new material is very bombastic and dynamic, and even though it's extremely diverse, every minute of it sounds like Avantasia. I'm really proud of what we're creating right now. And as if that wasn't enough: I'm anxiously looking forward to hitting the road again. I didn't necessarily expect this to happen as in the past it has always been difficult to align the individual schedules of the guest stars, but things have worked out, and we're ready to make it happen one more time! We'll put on a big show, we're gonna play over three hours, and we'll take the fans to a magical world all its own - to Avantasia. The live setlist is going to embrace the entire history of Avatnasia, from 'The Metal Opera' to 'Ghostlights' and of course everything in between!"
The world tour will kick off in Berlin on March 4th, 2016. Dates are as follows: More...

Just like Alice Cooper's show, the Tobias Sammet Rock Show will be broadcast on Radio Bob, and you can stream it at this location.

Avantasia's Tobias Sammet has checked in with the following post-tour recap via his official website here:
"Finally I have cooled down a little after this extensive Avantasia world tour, finally I have found a few moments to write down my thoughts on the tour. I have been on several world tours, I must have played something like 700 concerts in my life and I have to say: It‘s never been so difficult to say goodbye after a tour.
"The Mystery World Tour was an amazing experience for me, never before an Avantasia tour has been spread out over four months, never before I heard so many bad jokes (from anyone other than me) and never before I came home missing touring so much that it actually hurt, although I was happy to be back with my loved ones and get some rest. I wondered myself what it is, that makes the difference between earlier tours and this tour, and I guess it‘s simple: First of all, the tour was long enough to get used to being around those lovely fellow Avantasians. Second, if I compare it to Edguy tours: whenever we say goodbye we know, we‘ll meet a couple of months later to conquer the world again, with Avantasia the future is completely uncertain.
"I was accused of lying when I hit the road for the Mystery World Tour after I had announced the end in 2011. But you can imagine, it is not that easy to rely on a return of Avantasia, it depends on a lot of parameters, not at least all the musicians and their personal schedules. I thank God that He gave us the chance to bring that line up together and do this tour, I hope we will do it again some day, but you can never take that for granted, nor plan it, let alone expect it to happen again. I just hope one day it will happen. For sure there will be another album in a couple of years. But as much as I would love to do a tour, I do not know if we‘ll ever find a time frame in the future, that will allow us to bring the project on the road again. The organisation, the schedules, everyone‘s individual obligations with their individual bands, it‘s grinding... That‘s why I am rather thankful that I was given that chance. More...

Footage from Avantasia's first North American show, which was part of the week long Le Festival d'été de Québec in Québec City, Canada, was captured by Metal Underground.com on July 7, 2013. The band stopped in Canada on the "Mystery of Time" tour (see review here) on the way to Japan. The headline performance was cut short a bit due to the fact that lead vocalist Tobias Sammet had been suffering from the flu.
Amateur videos can be seen for the following tracks: "The Wicked Symphony," "Promised Land," "Scales of Justice" and "Sign of the Cross." Singers for the show included: Oliver Hartmann (Hartmann) (also on lead guitar), Thomas Rettke (Heaven's Gate), Eric Martin (Mr. Big), Bob Cately (Magnum), Amanda Somerville (Trillium) and Michael Kiske (Ex-Helloween).

The organizers of the Bloodstock festival have checked in with the following announcement about confirming more bands for this year's edition:
"Here at Bloodstock HQ we are excited to announce a whole batch of new additions for all three stages. There’s only seven weeks left to the most metal weekend of the year!! Have you got your tickets yet?!
"Opening Friday’s main stage, and fresh off the back of the release of ‘IV’, their first album in ten years, are British post metallers, Earthzone 9. The band are stoked to find their way to Catton Park’s hallowed ground, commenting 'Earthtone 9 have never played Bloodstock, so we could not be more excited! It's one of our only gigs this year, so we are truly going to make the most of it. There may well be some drinking!' You can pick up a free download of their single, ‘Horizon’s End’ at this location.
"On Sunday’s Sophie Lancaster stage, Sacred Mother Tongue get added. Having received huge plaudits for their second album, ‘Out of the Darkness’, and live shows, the Northampton based band are building quite the name for themselves. Check out the video for ‘A Light Will Shine’, here. More...
There’s yet more thrash for Bloodstock with Northern Irish upstarts Gama Bomb landing an opening slot on the Ronnie James Dio mainstage. The band is looking forward to churning up the Catton Park turf, commenting:
“Bloodstock: it’s just like Woodstock, but for heavy metal types, and replacing the love and peace with chips and Carling! And Slayer! Our UK fans have been asking for this for years, and now the dream is real. So pack your tent, back up your arse with bananas and send the word – The G-Bomb are comin’ to Bloodstock!"
The band’s fourth album, "The Terror Tapes," will be released next Monday 22nd April on AFM Records. Check out the new video for "Terrorscope" right here.
British heavy metal standard bearers Beholder also step in to an early mainstage slot on Saturday. Frontman Simon Hall says “For Beholder to actually be asked to do this, without me dropping to my knees and pleading like a bitch is a true acknowledgment of where the band is right now. To be on the best Bloodstock line-up ever is something we’re not going to approach lightly, and on Saturday 10th August, let’s show the rest of the world how true British Metal fans rule all!!”
