The prolific Russian/Ukrainian post rock/doom outfit Kauan returns with a seventh album: "Sorni Nai."
This coming release, due out November 10 through Blood Music, is a concept album that references and expands upon territory explored in previous work "Pirut," showcasing a single 52-minute long track, twisting through lush string orchestrations into sinister and operatic doom metal. Blood Music comments:
"The album's concept focuses on the infamous Djatlov Pass Incident. In 1959, nine Soviet hikers went on a trip to reach Mt. Ortorten in the Ural Mountains. None of the hikers were seen alive again. Their bodies were found a mile from their campsite, missing their skis, shoes, and coats while braving -30°C weather.
"Two of them had fractured skulls, two had major chest fractures, and one was missing her tongue. Investigators listed the cause of death as 'a compelling natural force,' and the case was immediately closed.
"Even though the album is intended to be one single track, the band has split it up into chapters for the CD release, which are titled in the native Mansi language." More...

Kauan has inked a record deal with Blood Music to release the "Pirut" album. The following press release was issued about the signing:
"Blending shimmering post-rock -- reminiscent of Godspeed! You Black Emperor -- with the funeral dirges of Evoken, Russia's Kauan has received a huge amount of praise in the European underground 'for a long time', which also happens to be the translation of their Finnish name.
"Now the band has inked a pact with Finland's Blood Music, which sees the band beginning their first journey into the worldwide metal scene as they plot to release 'Pirut', their 5th overall full-length, on December 15th.
"Often compared to Agalloch and Alcest, Kauan has spent several years creating a take on the genre all their own. Often atmospheric, 'Pirut' finds the band based in viola, choirs, slow piano melodies but with a doom metal base. An almost classical approach to metal that is sure to bring the band an instant following -- be on the lookout for music from 'Pirut' debuting in the coming weeks.
"Blood Music, to this point, has been known as one of the top vinyl labels for the metal underground in Finland, releasing incredibly detailed LP sets from Strapping Young Lad, Ihsahn, Sigh, Moonsorrow and more. The label has recently partnered with Code666 for distribution and now has it's sights set on also releasing new music from some of the best underground bands in the metal world."
