Mercenary Debuts "Anthem For The Anxious" Video
Denmark's metal juggernaut, Mercenary, continues its triumphant return with the release of their powerful second single, "Anthem For The Anxious". The track is a striking preview from their upcoming album, "Soundtrack For The End Times."
René Petersen, the band's vocalist, explains, "'Anthem For The Anxious' brings together all the best elements of the melodic side of Mercenary, spiced with the aggression and symphonic parts that make it all work! An anthem for the lost souls of this earth fearing for the future."
Emerging from a ten-year hiatus, Mercenary delivers an enthralling blend of melodic death and progressive metal, captivating fans with their distinctive Scandinavian fusion of melancholy, melody, and aggression. The new album, set to be released on September 22, 2023, promises to be a masterpiece that will resonate with fans of both genres. More...
Mercenary To Release New Album In September
With album number eight and ten years since their last release, Mercenary return with a masterpiece for every melodic death and progressive metal fan. Formed in Aalborg, Denmark, Mercenary capture the unique blend of Scandinavian melancholy, melody and aggression.
September 22 will see the band release their new offering, "Soundtrack For The End Of Times." You can pre-order the album
The first single off the album is the haunting "Heart Of The Numb", featuring Trivium vocalist Matt Heafy, which proves that death metal does not always need fast-paced riffage and thunderous blast beats
Guitarist Jakob Mølbjerg comments: "It's a great pleasure to finally be able to spill the beans about our new album, 'Soundtrack For The End Times,' which will be out on September 22nd! In all sincerity, we truly feel that this monster of an album is our darkest and heaviest effort yet and a truly fresh take on all the trademark elements of Mercenary's characteristic sound: Huge, soaring choruses that will grip and pierce your soul, bone crushing riffage and punishing drums that will pound you into the ground, and stellar leads that will bring back a renewed belief in beauty to your shattered existence. Everything wrapped in the crisp, powerful production from our very own Master-of-all-trades, Mr. Martin Buus, and a huge, crushing world class mix from Jacob Hansen.
"New and old fans alike will hopefully also be mesmerized by the outstanding cover artwork by the masterful Niklas Sundin, who also did the legendary covers for 11 Dreams and Architect Of Lies. Get a taste of the delicious darkness that is our new single, 'Heart Of The Numb', featuring none other than one of our biggest supporters ever, Mr. Matt Heafy of Trivium! We've been in touch for years and we were so fortunate that he agreed to grace this song and found the time to add some fierce killer vocals in his incredibly busy schedule. We're ever so grateful!"
Says Matt Heafy: "The world has always been familiar with the sounds and styles of metal from Sweden, from Norway, from Finland; but one country who has just as important - but unique - of a style is Denmark. Denmark has had countless amazing bands come forth in the last few years, but one of the most iconic Danish metal bands who sounds quintessentially Danish-metal is Mercenary. Mercenary for years has been ahead of the game crafting its own special blend of metal. When I hear Mercenary - I hear Denmark. I hear metal. The way Mercenary has and does present its own special breed of music is exceptional. You all must listen to this band." More...

Sunday Old School: Mercenary
Over the course of Sunday Old School, we've looked at groups from many countries, some more than others. The United States, Great Britain and Germany have all had quite a large number of bands featured throughout the history of this column, while Greece, Canada, Japan and Brazil have had a respectable number featured too. There are also countries which have only popped up once such as Turkey, Russia, Serbia and India. One country that has only had one of their native bands featured a small number of times is the northern European nation of Denmark, though their number will increase today as we take a look at their best known contribution to the power metal genre, Mercenary.
Mercenary began life in 1991, the brainchild of guitarist Hans Jørgen Andersen, who was joined in his musical endeavour by drummer Jakob Johnsen, singer Henrik "Kral" Andersen and Andreas W. Hansen on bass. The quartet recorded their first demo, "... Domicile" in 1993, with a second demo, "Gummizild" being released the next year, around the same time their song, "One Eyed Beast" appeared on the compilation, "Fuck You, We're From Denmark Vol.3." The demos garnered enough attention for the group to sign with Black Day Records, through whom they released their first EP, "Supremacy" in 1996, although by this point, Kral was the only original member left, taking up bass as well as holding his position as vocalist, with guitar and drum duties being handled by Nikolaj Brinkman, Jakob Mølbjerg and Rasmus Jacobsen respectively. Mercenary Posts "Welcome The Sickness" Video
Danish modern metal act Mercenary posted a new music video for the track "Welcome the Sickness." The song appears on the latest album "Through Our Darkest Days," which is available now through NoiseArt Records and Prosthetic Records. The video was directed & produced by Mircea Gabriel Eftemie.
The band commented: "We’re immensely proud to be able to present our new video for ‘Welcome The Sickness.’ It’s been a great and fun experience making this possible through a crowdfunding campaign and interacting with the fans in a whole new way. We are very grateful for the support, as we would never have been able to finance a visit in Denmark’s biggest green screen studio with professional lights and makeup followed by two months of post production on our own. Moreover, we are really really happy with the striking, atmospheric, and visually dramatic way in which director Mircea Eftemie made our musical universe come to life. Without an incredible amount of hard work on his behalf, this video wouldn't have been possible either, so please send a lot of kudos his way."

“Through Our Darkest Days,” the group’s seventh studio album, is scheduled for North American release on July 30th via Prosthetic Records. The album cover art, available below, was completed by Mnemic guitarist Mircea Efrfemie (Soilwork, Illdisposed) and “symbolizes a darkness we have gone through as a band, which we feel we have finally been able to put behind us. The lyrical universe is very much about making the most of life and not getting caught up in negativity.”

Mercenary Completes New Album, Artwork Revealed
Danish melodic death metal act Mercenary announced that work on the band's seventh album is complete. The album will be entitled "Through Our Darkest Days." Mixing was completed on April 23, 2013 at Hansen Studios with long time collaborator/producer Jacob Hansen. The album is set for release through NoiseArt Records on July 27th (EU) and a week later in the US via Prosthetic Records.
The album's cover artwork (shown below) was created by Mircea Eftemie (guitarist of Mnemic), who recently created covers for Soilwork, Illdisposed and others.
The band commented on the cover: “Last year when we were busy with pre-productions, we considered reaching out to Mircea to ask if he'd like to give our new cover a shot, because we liked his recent stuff and wanted to try someone with a fresh approach. Against all odds, however, he actually beat us to it and contacted us first with the exact same offer, so it very much seemed as a collaboration that was meant to be.
"After a few sketches, we quickly locked on to the main motive of the cover below, which we felt was both iconic, mysterious and not least, oddly disturbing. Most importantly perhaps, we also felt that Mircea's artwork had managed in a natural way to combine something fresh with the style of our older album covers and their dark and atmospheric vibes.
"As our new album is very much a combination our latest material with a lot of the more traditional melodic and melancholic elements of previous Mercenary albums, we felt that this was a perfect visual expression of Mercenary's sound and identity in 2013.
The cover symbolizes a darkness that we have gone through as a band, which we feel that we have finally been able to put behind us. The title of the album is meant very positively and thematizes both the journey through existential darkness as a general theme and the ability to break through it. The lyrical universe is very much about making the most of life and not getting caught up in negativity.” More...

"Moreover, we're happy to present a small special something for you in the form of a 'fan-made' road video for the track 'The Black Brigade' filmed in the summer of 2012. It was made by our friend, Don G, whom we've previously cooperated with for the cover of 'Metamorphosis.'
"He kindly filmed and edited the vid for his own sake but we thought it was way too cool not to share with you. More footage from the Basinfire Festival (Cz) performance will be used for another video coming in early 2013 - and who knows, maybe we'll also have some cool info on a new album by then...
