Best Metal Newcomers Of 2013 Explored, Part 1

Each year in our annual metal awards we take a look at the best “newcomers” – those bands that released debut full-lengths worth your time.

In addition to the standard slew of burgeoning metal bands getting their footing in 2013, there were several new projects created by established members of the scene that dropped some of the best albums of the year.

To help get you acquainted with the best new talent releasing albums you may have missed, we’ll be looking at each of the bands nominated for the “best newcomer” category by our staff. Today content manager xFiruath covers Witherscape (which ended up winning the category in our 2013 awards), Gloryhammer, and Cnoc an Tursa.

Witherscape

An instance of the champ coming out of retirement to show the young pups how things are done, Witherscape marks the return of European metal legend Dan Swano, who has spent the last several years behind the sound board instead of in front of the microphone.

Rather than going in the direction of his various ‘90s projects, this band is essentially a progressive death metal outing, with some strong classic metal leanings. “The Inheritance” was an album I greatly enjoyed on first listen, and have only come to appreciate even more over time, to the point it’s now among my most played metal on any given week.

To find out more about Witherscape, you can read our interview with Dan Swano, or check out my original review of the album right here.

Metalunderground.com's Best Of 2013 Awards

We come now to the end of a year overflowing with metallic fury from bands new and old, regrouped and long-running, and covering just about every imaginable sub-genre.

More than anything 2013 was characterized by returns of bands long dormant, with highlights for fans easily coming from the reemergence of Carcass, Gorguts, Summoning, Extol, and Black Sabbath.

While there were some notable critical flops (“Super Collider” and the self-titled “Satyricon” come to mind), this year featured an overall satisfying lineup of good, great, and even fantastic albums from across the metal spectrum. That’s a boon for metal heads, but it also makes it harder for us to easily nail down clear winners in our categories as votes come in from our diverse staff of contributors positioned around the globe.

Long running staples of the European scene made their marks as usual in 2013, with new albums from Amon Amarth, Amorphis, Stratovarius, and Dark Tranquillity. Interestingly, the U.S. wasn’t left behind as much this year, with tunes out from Skeletonwitch, Subrosa, Toxic Holocaust, Vattnet Viskar, ASG, Castevet, Inter Arma, and more.

Just because Testament wasn’t around didn’t mean thrash slouched off either, with Sodom, Onslaught, Evile, and Death Angel bringing out the big guns. The experimental and avant-garde side saw weirdly awesome releases from Oranssi Pazazu, Code, and Tribulation, while unexpectedly different offerings arrived courtesy of Watain and Darkthrone. Death metal meanwhile bore witness to newly unleashed material from the likes of Suffocation, Deicide, Autopsy, Hail of Bullets, Hypocrisy, and Six Feet Under. More...

Witherscape Reveals New Album Artwork

Witherscape, the new atmospheric and progressive dark metal outfit formed by Dan Swanö together with fellow Swedish multi-instrumentalist Ragnar Widerberg, will release debut album "The Inheritance" on July 29th in Europe and August 6th in North America via Century Media Records. The album's artwork and track listing are now available below.

1. Mother Of The Soul
2. Astrid Falls (streaming here)
3. Dead For A Day
4. Dying For The Sun
5. To The Calling Of Blood And Dreams
6. The Math Of The Myth
7. Crawling From Validity
8. The Wedlock Observation
9. The Inheritance

The album's concept is split into different episodes, with the story briefly taking place in a remote village in northern Sweden in the late 1800's. The central character lives in Stockholm and comes from wealth, and upon the death of his family, he's informed by the family lawyer that he has inherited a large estate up north. Having been oblivious to the estate's existence, he decides to investigate, and once he's there, as Dan Swanö puts it, "all kinds of weird shit happens..."

The cover artwork for "The Inheritance" was created by Travis Smith/Seempieces. Dan Swanö comments about the artwork: "Both me and Ragnar are fascinated by old abandoned buildings and it was pretty clear from the start that we would have the estate our main character inherits on the album cover. We used Travis Smith as a 'medium' for our visual ideas and he did a spectacular job transforming our written wishes into a real image." More...

Witherscape Streaming New Song

Witherscape, the new atmospheric and progressive dark metal outfit formed by Dan Swanö together with fellow Swedish multi-instrumentalist Ragnar Widerberg, has confirmed the release of debut album, "The Inheritance."

The album is due out July 29th in Europe and August 6th in North America via Century Media Records. Check out the new song "Astrid Falls" below. Dan Swanö comments about the track:

"'Astrid Falls' is one of my many favourite songs on the album. It represents the Witherscape sound in a good way. It's showcasing the clean and growling vocal interplay and the overall 'vibe' of my and Ragnar's playing as well as the dynamics of our songwriting."

The following press release was also issued about the band:

"Witherscape marks the long overdue return for Dan Swanö as an active composer and recording artist in the world of extreme metal, after having mostly been involved with mixing in the studio during these past years. While The Inheritance is not purely a death metal release, it showcases both the heavier and mellower sides of Swanö's creativity, and should consequently not only please fans of his earlier efforts like Moontower or the Edge of Sanity catalogue, but also attract fans of progressively atmospheric contemporary metal in the vein of Opeth, Katatonia, or Amorphis. Dan Swano Signs To Century Media

It's with great pride and joy that Century Media Records can announce the signing of a long-term worldwide deal with Swedish singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer extraordinaire Dan Swanö. The label comments:

"Most dedicated metalheads will not only be able to call themselves owners of certain releases by one Dan's many outstanding bands/projects (Edge of Sanity, Nightingale, etc.), but also the work at his own Unisound studio will surely have left a mark in everyone's record collection at some point: Opeth, Katatonia, Dissection, Merciless, Dark Funeral, Hail of Bullets, Marduk, and Nasum, to name but a few.

"Swanö has been no stranger to Century Media Records: He was originally involved with the death metal supergroup Bloodbath (also featuring members of Opeth and Katatonia), who released the Breeding Death EP as well as the amazing first two albums, Resurrection Through Carnage and Nightmares Made Flesh, via Century Media. Most recently, Swanö has been heavily working again as producer and mixer of albums, including releases by Century Media artists such as Asphyx, Grand Supreme Blood Court, and Morgoth." More...
