The blog Doomed & Stoned has put together an extensive compilation of underground heavy bands in Portland, Oregon, which features Ape Machine's "Angry Man," Blackwitch Pudding's "Swamp Gas Of The Nevermizer," and a whole lot more. The site's founder, Billy Goat, comments:
"Portland, Oregon is known for many things--it's the 'Rose City,' clustered around the mighty Willamette River and nearby Mt. Hood, the home of Nike and the Trail Blazers, even a major network television show called Portlandia.
"But to the hard working locals, Portland is home two the two big things that really matter: brews and bad-ass rock 'n' roll. Doomed & Stoned in Portland is a snapshot of the heavy music scene right now in Portland--from the ever-popular Red Fang, Lord Dying, and Toxic Holocaust, to rising stars such as Sons of Huns, Ape Machine, and Drunk Dad.
"Most of all, here is a collection of bands with a strong DIY ethic--everything from experimental metal to a distinct brand of Northwest punk to the ultra-heavy metal doom giants like Graves at Sea, Usnea, and Stoneburner. Not to mention the bands that just like to "Keep Portland Weird" (Blackwitch Pudding, Pinkzilla, Big Black Cloud). Over 65 bands waiting for you to lend them your ears--and a free download, to boot. You may just discover your next favorite bands."
Relapse Records is proud to announce the signing of Pacific Northwest death/doom/sludge quartet Usnea.
Formed in 2011, Usnea (Zeke Rogers - drums, Joel Williams - bass & vocals, Johnny Lovingood - guitar, Justin Cory - guitar / vocals) released an eponymous debut via Orca Wolf Records in 2013, which can be heard below.
Now the band has entered Haywire Studios with Jared "Fester" See to record a sophomore full-length and Relapse debut which is planned for a late 2014 release. The group commented on the signing:
"We are stoked and honored to sign with Relapse and join the ranks of fellow heavy acts (and buddies) Cough, Indian, Inter Arma, Primitive Man, Christian Mistress, Nux Vomica, Lord Dying, and so many more. Relapse has put out some incredible, seriously solid heavy albums over the past 20 plus years and we couldn't be happier having them release our next album. On top of that, everyone at Relapse has been awesome and supportive and couldn't be nicer folks.”
Additionally, Usnea will be hitting the road in August for a short run of West Coast dates that includes dates with Lycus and Bell Witch. The tour is in support of an upcoming split 7" with Germany's Ruins to be released on Halo of Flies Records in North America and Twisted Chords in Europe. A complete list of dates is available below.
