Background

Agathdaimon are a melodic black/death metal band that combine the epic sound of Dimmu Borgir with the hard guitar sound of bands like Satyricon and Mayhem.

Founded in September 1995 by guitar vocalist, Sathonys and drummer,Matthias R., Agathdaimon were later joined by keyboardist Vlad and bassist Marko through ads in magazines. Two months later they were joined by second guitarist, Hyperion.

With this line up Agathdaimon recorded their first demo "Carpe Noctem" in April 1996. This got the attention of Century Media who ended up signing them. After some touring the band recorded their second demo, "Near Dark" in March 1997. "Near Dark" got many label's interest and Agathdaimon decided to go to Nuclear Blast because they offered the best support in reguards to finances and promotion.

Before recording of their debut album, "Blacken the Angel" in 1998, Vlad got stuck in Romania while visiting, the government wouldn't let him leave. So, Agathdaimon finished the album and did tours with guest musicians until late 1999 when they went to Romania to be with Vlad for the recording of the follow up to "Blacken the Angel", "Higher Art of Rebellion". "Higher Art of Rebellion" was then released in 2000 and the band was reunited with Vlad.

After touring, Agathdaimon went to work on the 2002 release, "Chapter III". After this release Vlad and Marko left the band and Agathdaimon assembled the current line up for the most recent release, 2004's "Serpent's Embrace".

Agathodaimon Posts Track-By-Track Breakdown

Agathodaimon's "In Darkness" was recorded at the Kohlekeller Studio with producer Kristian "Kohle" Kohlmannslehner.

The album - due out June 28th - will include eight tracks, while a bonus track will be included on the limited edition digipak.

Guitarists Sathonys and Thilo are now offering som insight on the tracks off the album. Check out the track by track break down below.

Adio:

Thilo: "Adio" is the first song that we rehearsed and composed with the new line-up. Right from the beginning, there was the idea to have a melodic chorus along with double-lead guitars and an aggressive verse with 'fast' vocals. Manuel delivered incredible drumming here! The piano-overdubs in the chorus were created in a late stage of the production - such things can happen if I'm left alone in the studio... luckily everyone did like this element. By the way, this song consists of half English, half Romanian lyrics."

Somewhere, Somewhen:

Thilo: The intro of "Somewhere, Somewhen" was composed by Kohle and me during the pre-production. The horror-like character gets the listener directly into the proper mood. A very emotional song, the melodies come directly from the heart (maybe I should do folk music), besides, the lyrics are very melancholic. My personal favourite of this album! Oh, and it's the only song on "In Darkness" that features a classic guitar solo ;) My highlight: When the ride-cymbal starts at the end of the song and Ash cries out like a maniac! (I believe he still hates me for pushing him to the limits there.)

Agathodaimon Reveals "In Darkness" Artwork

Germany's Agathodaimon has checked in with the following update about releasing the new "In Darkness" album:

"As reported earlier, studio work is going fine, and we’re confident that all will be done until end of April. In case you might not know it yet: Release date for IN DARKNESS is set to the 28th of June!

"And hey, we finally can reveal the album cover... Artwork was done by Hicham Haddaji of Strychneen Studio, check out his other works at this location.

"So far, the basic recordings are done. What’s left? Fine tuning, some details here and there, and of course the mix! Well, how will the new album sound like, you might ask? In a word, awesome. Yes, that’s what YOU decide in the end. But we’re sure it has a lot of killer songs, and we did step into the right direction- though it’s also a step backwards. Back to the roots, to be clear.

"We collectively felt that PHOENIX reached a point that’s as far as we can go, without denying our roots. So we summoned the spirit of the old times (of course without trying to pretend it’s 1995).
What does that mean? We put focus on atmosphere and got rid of elements which did not fit to our vision. To summarize, I’d say it’s less technical, but more dense, coming rather from the heart than our heads.. sounds strange maybe, but you’ll get it once you’ll hear the first songs. More...

Agathodaimon Postpones Istanbul Show

Agathodaimon has checked in with the following announcement about postponing the band's previously schedule show in Istanbul and update about working on new material:

"Time for some news! First the bad news; sadly the gig which was supposed to take place in Istanbul/Turkey the 5th of March is postponed. It’s not canceled, but will be postponed to October, due to various reasons. We were looking forward to playing there, but the circumstances did not allow a proper organization, so we agreed with the organizer that this gig will be held in October instead. Further news once we have them!

"Besides, we would like to remind that we’ll play a nice, tiny club-gig in our 'Hometown' Mainz at the Caveau-Club, the 17th of March. Also we have another festival confirmed for the summer: We’ll be headlining the 2nd Monster Metal Meeting which takes place in Gronau (near the dutch border). This takes place the 30.07.

"Besides, we’re mainly working on our upcoming album of course- more news shortly."

Well, nothing big and fancy, but we’ll play an extended, long set with lots of old classics, plus there’ll be other bands such as Odium, Contrast and Apsis. And of course there will be time to chat and have a drink together, so, come along and party with us! (Apart from that, it will be the last concert that will take place at this venue before it will be closed!)

"To celebrate our anniversary, we’ll be giving away 3*2 tickets for the concert in Frankfurt (that's in Germany, folks ;). Just send us an email to competition@agathodaimon.de and let us know why you should be getting free access, and you might be the lucky winner of 2 tickets."

Agathodaimon Cancels Nachtwache Festival

Agathodaimon has issued the following update about upcoming festival appearances:

"First of all, as you should already know, we’ll be playing this weekend at Wacken Rocks South (Saturday) and Wacken Rocks Seaside (Sunday). If you’re going there (and who’d miss the only german open air shows of Slayer, not to speak of other cool bands such as Volbeat?), be sure not to miss our shows.

"Now, some good news for our romanian friends. Rock City Festival was not fully cancelled, but postponed and will take place in another form (at Romania’s capitol Bucharest) with a different billing under the banner of „Bucharest Metal Meeting“. Most important: We’ll be there, amongst bands such as Lake Of Tears, Mayhem, Primordial etc., so check your calendar and mark Saturday, the 10th of October! We’ll inform you about further news concerning this festival soon.

"Then, on to sad news: We won’t play at the Nachtwache Festival, which was scheduled for the 12th of September. On Tuesday, we received info that we’ve been dropped off the bill due to „low pre-sales“ and that the organizer doesn’t want to risk investing the money. Though we don’t understand why they decide to inform us that late, 2 weeks prior to the gig, we also wonder if the whole festival is cancelled or just our participation, as they still advertise with our name and didn’t respond yet to our mails. So, if you planned to go there because of Agathodaimon, simply don’t, we won’t be there.

"Instead, check out our other gigs in September, at the JUZ Hängematte in Sulzbach-Rosenberg (25.09.) and the Eternal Frost Festival IV, in Naila, 26.09., which is organized by our friends of Cryptic Wintermoon who’ll have their album release party there as well. Be there, it will be fun!"
