Latest Jon Oliva's Pain News
Below is our complete Jon Oliva's Pain news coverage, including columns and articles pertaining to the band. Some articles listed may be indirectly related, such as side projects of the band members, etc.
Note: We began associating news directly with bands in late 2003. Therefore, earlier band news may not be listed on this page.
Savatage/Trans-Siberian Orchestra/Jon Oliva's Pain founder Jon Oliva will release his very first solo album in 2013. While his band Jon Oliva's Pain continues to write the follow up to the 2010 LP "Festival," Oliva will release his solo LP in Spring 2013 via AFM Records.
The announcement reads as follows:
"Good day one and all,
"We thank you all for your patience with regards to announcing our new recording plans.
"While JOP is very much intact and focused on new music and future touring...JON OLIVA will release his first ever solo record in early 2013.
"Jon has assembled a collection of ideas from the past 4-5 years and wants the opportunity to present them as his own work. Jon will be recording nearly all the instrument tracks and vocals himself and also playing drums on several tracks. Once again, I have the honor of recording the bulk of the drum tracks on the new cd, but this record will have been created from start to finish with Jon being completely at the helm."
Jon Oliva commented on the album: "I’ve got some weird ideas that I wanna try and I’ve got some time to do it. I don’t want do just 'another' JOP record. I’ve done four of those already. I wanna do something different. I have some material that I’ve wanted to put out for a while, that I’ll talk with the record company about, maybe putting something out quickly, like in the next four or five months, to give me more time to do this JOP record. I want the next JOP cd to be very special. I’ve got some great friends from other bands that are going to be a significant part of the next JOP release. We are going to do a killer JOP record and then an additional bonus cd with guest stars... kind of like the AVANTASIA thing but not in a story line. Tobias Sammet does a magnificent job with it, but I don’t have that much time to write a whole story, so I’ll just have some powerhouse friends from various bands come in and take it over the top."
Drum recordings, handled by J.O.P. drummer Christopher Kinder, begin at the legendary Morrisound Studio's in mid December.
Italy's Elvenking has issued the following update about releasing a new album and recruiting guest musicians:
"This summer is magical boys and girls! We hope you are already enjoying your summer holidays or that you planning your trips and your relax time.
"As you know the new Elvenking album is ready and it will be hopefully released inSeptember 2012. We will inform you about the final release date as soon as we'll have more news about it. We'll try to give you some updates about the new album every week. In the meantime we are preparing things around the new video clip shooting and we will film it while you'll have a swim at your favourite pool or a good hot night at the seaside!
"You already know that the Mountain King himself, Mr. Jon Oliva, will be guest on the new album leading his voice on two tracks. But we have also other great guest performance on the album. Wintersun’s guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari laid down an Incredible guitar solo on a track called 'Walking Dead' (oh yes, this is the very first new title revealed! …cool as the tv series at least!!). You will hear it.
"Also Maurizio Cardullo from our dear fellows Folkstone has taken care of all the folk instruments in the album. So you will hear a lot of bagpipes, tin whistles, low whistlesthrough the songs. What do you think about that? And last but not least the gorgeous and amazing Finnish singer Netta Dahlberg performed some female vocals. If you have the lastAmorphis album, well she IS that amazing voice! More...
Chris Kinder of Jon Oliva's Pain has issued the following update about the band rehearsing for upcoming live shows:
"Tour rehearsal update and stuff: We are fast approaching the end of rehearsals in preparation for the first show in Tampa on June 16th at the Ritz Theatre and then it's on to Europe and The United Arab Emirates!
"It's remarkable to see and hear how the band has come together in the past few months. The hard work and dedication of Jerry, Joe and Jason has been nothing short of extraordinary. Their passion and attention to detail to such a wide range of material in such a short time is a testament to what professionals they really are. And honestly, Oliva's voice is on fire. I for one have not seen so much excitement and sheer power from his voice in quite some time. It is remarkable to see him sing such a wide variety of difficult songs as effortlessly as he is...awesome indeed!
"There are still a handful of VIP Rock Royalty Packages still available. We will likely shut down registration for this special package in the next week or so (if not sold out), as we have to order correct shirt sizes for each of our noble guests. Less than 3 weeks til showtime...don't be left out. General admission tickets are still available as well.
"Update you all again in a few days...we plan to blow the roof off the hall of the mountain king soon enough!"

Jon Oliva's Pain announced the addition of touring guitarist Joseph Diaz. The announcement was made in a post on the band's Facebook Page:
"New Guitarist Added for the Hall of the Mountain King tour...
"Please give a warm welcome to another great talent...Joe Diaz!
"JOSEPH DIAZ- Guitars and Vocals: Born in New York, school gang violence and the cold war were all realities that shaped his way of thought. His family moved to Tampa Bay Florida when he was 13. As a freshman in High School he found Florida schools far behind and boring. His active mind needed something to fill the void. The answer came as music.
"Music came in the form of a Stratocaster Guitar and a Marshall amp. Soon after, he was turned on to Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. This forged the roots for his style as did his constant involvement in the very strong Tampa Bay Metal Scene. Joe spent his youth in many original and cover bands ,writing, learning and paying dues.
"Joe is also a classical guitarist and into the blues but Metal is his main focus. Currently working with Cemetary Sluts (An original Speed Metal Band) and Figure In Black (a Black Sabbath Tribute act)
"He has also played in Disaster Peace (with Pete Black - King Diamond and Wade Black - Crimson Glory) and Brutus (with John Greely – Iced Earth) and his own original bands, Our Final Failure,
End Unseen ,Moss Feaster and Back 2 Zero.
"Welcome to the party Joe...it's going to be a wild ride." More...

Jon Oliva's Pain, led by the Mountain King himself, will play the classic Savatage release "Hall of the Mountain King" (1987) in its entirety along with Savatage guitarist Chris Caffery (Trans-Siberian Orchestra) at next years Bang Your Head Festival to be held in Balingen, Germany from July 13-14, 2012. The performance will mark the album's 25th Anniversary. The band will also perform some songs from Doctor Buther, the defunct project of Oliva and Caffery.
It was reported earlier that former Savatage vocalist Zack Stevens and Circle II Circle will perform Savatage's "Wake of Magellan" LP with Caffery at Wacken 2012 in August.
In other Jon Oliva's Pain news, Oliva and drummer Chris Kinder continue to demo songs for the next JLP album and the follow up to the 2010 release "Festival." In the latest update on the band's Facebook Page, Kinder states: "As for the 'band,' we have made no decisions on anything at this point. The first objective right now is the songs. So, we will continue the process as we have done since 'Maniacal Renderings' which is basically Jon's ideas and me crafting them into working songs and then we will worry about the rest of the details. Everything and everyone else involved with work itself out in the very near future. It's just nice to finally be back on that horse and riding a new wave of music for a JOP release in 2012."
Drummer Chris Kinder posted the following update on the official Jon Oliva's Pain Facebook page about the writing update for the follow up to the band's 2010 release "Festival":
"Alrighty peoples.....update time.
"Oliva and I spent 3 hours last night going through cd after cd of ideas, both old and new, and have officially begun piecing some of this material together.
"It's really quite scary how much great material we have to work with already and it's gonna be another painful task to cram it down to 10-12 songs. We have so many plans for 2012...and it is going to put some huge smiles on your faces when we are able to announce everything we are planning. I am actually quite scared myself, and we won't be getting much sleep for the next 12 months.
"More updates as they happen....stay tuned!
Drummer Chris Kinder and legendary vocalist Jon Oliva posted the following update on the official Jon Oliva's Pain Facebook Page that the team has begun working on material for a new LP.
The update reads: "Jon and I will begin the daunting task of going through new material as we prepare, to prepare our preparations for a new JOP cd due out in 2012. 1st day is always interesting. You never know what JO has up his sleeve. Updates to follow....Cheers, Chris"

earMUSIC, the international rock label of the Hamburg-based entertainment group Edel, has announced the signing of American/Norwegian melodic metallers Kamelot. The band's new studio album, "Poetry For The Poisoned," will be released in Europe on September 3, 2010.
"I think this album is by far our most diverse, fusing new ideas and elements along with the traditional Kamelot sound and style that we have established over the years," states Kamelot guitarist Thomas Youngblood.
"Poetry for the Poisoned" was mostly written in the remote woods of Norway to the final songwriting sessions in a remote region of Germany. Recordings took place in the familiar Gate Studios in Wolfsburg, Germany with producers Sascha Paeth and Miro. Additional tracking also took place in Tampa, Florida as well as various studios in Sweden, Greece and the U.S.
"Poetry for the Poisoned" features guest appearances by Simone Simons (Epica), Gus G. (Ozzy Osbourne, Firewind), Björn "Speed" Strid (Soilwork) and Jon Oliva (Savatage, Jon Oliva's Pain). The artwork was created by many great artists, including Seth Siro Anton, Natalie Shau and Michal Loranc.
"'Poetry for the Poisoned' is a mix of progressive elements, modern rock, dark arts and also power metal," states Youngblood. "It comes at a time where many people around the world are searching for something to grab on to spiritually, including myself. I recently lost my mother and to be honest it was very hard on me. So there are some melancholy moods reflected on this album."
Frontman Roy Khan assures that "Poetry for the Poisoned" will both please the band's existing following and expose the universe of Kamelot to a whole range of new fans. "'Poetry for the Poisoned' is our longest and toughest production so far, but when I hear the result I know it was well worth the struggle," he says.
Max Vaccaro, director of the earMUSIC label, commented: "If there is one thing that is absolutely clear with Kamelot, it's that the band has a unique vision of metal and they consider anything they do as the 'next step' to something bigger and better, constantly adamant to reach new ambitious artistic targets. We're happy about the fact that they have chosen earMUSIC as the partner to expand their audience with this new wonderful album."
"Poetry For The Poisoned" will also be available as a limited edition hard-cover digipak CD with a bonus DVD, LP and limited collector's edition featuring a bonus 45" vinyl with two rare songs only available on this strictly limited format, personally signed by the band.
Kamelot recently tapped Swedish director Owe Lingvall of Village Road Films for the video shoot and production of the song "The Great Pandemonium". The track, which was performed on the band's recently completed European tour, will appear on "Poetry For The Poisoned". Other songtitles set to appear on the effort include "House On A Hill"and "Hunters Season", the latter of which was also performed on the band's recently completed European headlining tour.
Kamelot recently inked a deal with Marquee/Avalon Records for the Japanese release of its next album. The plans for the North American release will be announced in the near future.

Jon Oliva's Pain, the band led by Savatage mastermind Jon Oliva, has issued the following update about working on a new album:
"JOP's been very busy since returning from the
fall 2008 US tour with CirlceIICirlce/Manticora and thought we would spell it all out for you as 2009 kicks into high gear.
"First, we would like to announce official endorsements from our great partners at Ddrum (Christopher Kinder), Fender Bass Guitars (Kevin Rothney) and Charvel Guitars (Tom McDyne). Locking into partnerships with these high quality manufacturers helps us promote the music and the instruments that allow us to deliver the best performances possible. We sincerely appreciate their support and recognition of our desire to grow their brands and ours...thanks!
"On the music front: JOP is deep into pre-production for our 4th release due out later this year. 13 songs are on the table with another 6 still in their infancy. Expect us to deliver another 60+ minutes. We are determined to make this record heavier and more diverse than the previous3 cd's. We have done quite a bit of experimenting over the past 2 albums, but there is a real desire to push our performances and Oliva's voice harder than ever. Recording will begin at Morrisound Studio's-Tampa in late March. More...

JON OLIVA'S PAIN drummer Christopher Kinder has posted a lengthy update on the recording sessions for the group's third album. An excerpt follows:
"[Jon] Oliva [vocals] was here on Friday and will be back today to continue on the journey of keyboard, string, and special effects. His ability to create unlimited counter melodies within every song is awe inspiring. He plays violin and chelo like a real player would, and while we will have some live string players on this CD... no one will be able to tell the difference between the actual player and his expert keyboard string tracks."
"We should begin vocals in the next week or so. Oliva's voice is once again in perfect shape and the amount of backing vocals that we have to record will make us all dizzy before it is done. But, goddamn, is it cool! Zahner [keyboardist John Zahner] will be coming in at the end to add all the bells, whistles, B3 organ and whatever else we need." More...
