Uli Jon Roth
From: Düsseldorf, Germany
Last Known Status: Active
Uli Jon Roth is known as one of the founders of neoclassical music, and is the creator of the Sky Guitar. He began his career in the 1970's as lead guitarist for the Scorpions, but left the band when his changing musical style clashed with the emerging hard rock sound of the popular 80's band.
Roth formed his own band, Electric Sun, in the 1980's and released three albums between 1979 and 1985. After commissioning the now infamous Sky Guitar, which features custom and additional frets, Roth opened Sky Academy, and went to work on solo projects. These have included symphonies, concertos, and the Symphonic Legends series.
He also does oil painting and has written books of poetry, inspirational treatises, and music history.

As the 40th Anniversary of his joining the Scorpions North American tour rolls on, Uli Jon Roth has confirmed that Dean Guitars and Ddrum CEO Elliot Rubinson will be playing bass in Uli's band for the first half of the tour.
Rubinson recently toured North America as a part of Michael Schenker's band. Elliot started on January 26th in Santa Ana, CA and will continue on the tour through February 12th in Ottawa, Ontario Canada. In addition ULI will be joined by various Dean Artists throughout the tour.
Elliot commented about being a part of ULI's band on the upcoming tour: "I have been fortunate to be able to have played with Uli everywhere from cruise ship tours to European trade shows. He is clearly one of the greatest guitarists ever with a sense of harmonies few possess. Since we grew up on the same music we share a passion for greats like Jimi Hendrix. I am very excited about being a part of the filming and recording taking place on this tour"
Uli is equally excited to be playing with Rubinson: "It is always a real pleasure to share the stage with Elliott Rubinson. Not only is he an excellent bass player, who delivers the goods at every show, but he also connects with the audience in a great way. Together we're rocking the house!" More...
Uli Jon Roth has checked in with the following announcement about upcoming tour dates and other activity throughout the year:
"Greetings to all of you! I hope you had a great New Year. Here is a condensed list of some of the events that are planned for the first half of this year. 2013 is going to be a very busy and intensely productive year ahead, it seems.
"We will start off with a two-day Sky Academy in Los Angeles, at the Santa Monica Playhouse on January 21st and 22nd. This is a beautiful, intimate theatre, where we held one of the previous Sky Academies which we all have fond memories of. I'm looking forward to being there again!
"The next day I will take part in Jason Becker's 'Not Dead Yet' concert in San Francisco, together with my friends Steve Morse, Richie Kotzen, Gus G, and several other great players. Jason is an inspiration to all of us and I feel honored to be part of this worth-while cause.
"Following that, I shall be attending the Winter NAMM show in Anaheim, California and will do a signing event for the Sky Guitar Limited Edition at the DEAN booth.
"At the end of January we are embarking on my extensive 40th Anniversary Tour of the US, which will take us all the way through February until the beginning of March. 2013 marks the 40th anniversary of my involvement with the SCORPIONS. The main theme of this tour will therefore be dedicated to performing my personal favorites from the five albums which I recorded with that great band.
"I have chosen about 30 songs in all from that era as the basis of our repertoire, several of which have never even been performed live by either the Scorpions or myself. We will be rotating a selection of these songs on the tour, varying our sets on a nightly basis, because we cannot possibly play all of them in one go. More...

As you will all be aware 3 gigs were cancelled this month due to band line up changes, we are now in a position to update you with those changes.
It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce that both John Slater and Steve Wray are unable to do the tour dates for the rest of the year. As a result, they have both decided not to continue as full time members of the Blaze band.
Blaze Bayley, all at Black Machine and the BMC would like to thank John and Steve for 4+ years of Blood (the real stuff), sweat (gallons of it) and, yes, even a few tears along the way. We wish them well in the future.
Both Dave Knight and Wayne Banks are unable to do the rest of the tour dates this year due to other projects.
On a lighter note, these are the gigs that are confirmed so far between now and the end of the year:More...
Legendary guitarist Uli Jon Roth (ex-Scorpions) and his Sky Orchestra will be joined by several very special guests during their performance at the Renaissance castle Schloss Beck in Bottrop-Kirchhellen, Germany on October 9. Performing several pieces with Sky Orchestra will be Doro Pesch, Victor Smolski (RAGE) and Liz Vandall. The program will last for approximately three hours (with intermission) and will include a complete rendition of "Metamorphosis of Vivaldi's IV Seasons" as well as many pieces from all stages of Uli's musical journey. The multimedia event, dubbed "Rock Meets Renaissance," is going to be filmed, and part of the footage will be included on a DVD based on the music of the "Metamorphosis" album.
Guitar legend Uli Jon Roth is finally returning to the States after an absence of 19 years. News of the tour was already spreading like wildfire among the many admirers of one of the last great and original guitar heroes before the tour was even announced.
Best known for his ground-breaking work with the German hard rock band Scorpions, of which he was an original founding member, the enigmatic multi-talent is at long last embarking on a US tour, which will continue through September.
The long-awaited tour will start in Los Angeles at the House of Blues on August 26th and ends in Mexico, where Roth is head-lining shows with special guests. In the States U.J.R. is sharing the bill with the Michael Schenker Group.
Roth has often been hailed as a true genius on the guitar, always stoutly defying the conventions of the music industry and forging his own way. It is virtually impossible to categorize his output which is wide ranging from classic rock to full scale symphonic works with orchestras.
Since his time with the Scorpions and his own group Electric Sun, U.J.R. has persistently developed his unique playing style which earned him the reputation of being one of the most influential and greatest guitarists of our time. Always one to push the envelope on the guitar as well as in his symphonic compositions, Uli is seen by many as a musical trend setter who is well ahead of his time. He has been an inspiration to artists world-wide, influencing generations of younger players as well as his peers.
His show will include material from all periods of his career including a new and amazing version of his Scorpions song "The Sails of Charon," which Roth has just recorded with a symphony orchestra. The song features Liz Vandall on vocals. Furthermore Uli¹s set will feature parts of his latest release the critically-acclaimed "Metamorphosis of the Seasons," as well as material from each of his Electric Sun albums.
The format of Uli¹s set is innovative. He will be playing his legendary seven-string Sky Guitar, an instrument he designed himself, which enables him to play a full six-octave range. He will also perform in front of a cinemascope screen with just two other musicians on stage. The screen will show spectacular footage directed by the man himself, which often features the members of his own classical Sky Orchestra as well as other musicians with whom Roth interacts live. The result is a perfectly sounding trip through Space and Time.
Roth has recently toured this format in Europe with great success and is very much looking forward to touring in the US again.
