Here we are, more than one month into 2010, the Super Bowl past, as we've yet to post our staff picks for 2009. Nevertheless, I polled our staff here at Metalunderground.com at the end of last year to obtain their picks in several categories in metal for 2009 and will now present those results.
The outlook for 2009 in metal was perhaps positive, but not phenomenal before the year began, having seen a number of landmark releases and tours in the two years prior. But when the year was over, I'd have to say I was pleasantly surprised at what a good year in metal 2009 turned out to be. As the metalcore trend fades further into horizon, we had hardly a mention of metalcore bands in this year's poll. Sure, the stalwarts will still have success, but the novelty has worn off and the genre as a whole does not generate as much buzz anymore. The only noticable trend was the growth of the thrash resurgence, which is hard to fault, giving the year a very solid metal feeling.
That said, let's get down to the details and talk about those bands that made 2009 such a solid year for heavy metal by announcing the Metalunderground.com staff picks for 2009. Here are the Metalunderground.com staff picks for the following categories: Best Metal Album of 2009, Best Metal DVD of 2009, Best Metal Newcomer of 2009, Best Live Act of 2009, and Most Anticipated Release for 2010. After years of obscurity, Anvil has returned to the world of metal in full-force. After releasing their latest album “This is 13” and playing numerous festivals this summer, Anvil is touring the US and other countries this year to reclaim their old fans’ love and make new ones. At all-ages shows, the generations represented range from young kids who have never been to a rock show to metalheads older than the half-centurions in Anvil. I saw their first show in New Orleans Saturday night, and it was amazing. More...

Florida death metallers Six Feet Under are back with their 3rd installment of the band's cover series, "Graveyard Classics 3," due out on Metal Blade Records January 19th 2010. "Graveyard Classics 3" was recorded at D.O.I. Digital Audio in Tampa, FL, was mixed at Audiohammer Studios by Mark Lewis, and was produced by Chris Barnes.
Here's what Chris Barnes has to say about the band's latest chapter in the Graveyard Classics chain: "We went about picking the tracks for this installment of Graveyard Classics by really just trying to search out songs from early on in our musical upbringing, as well as tracks from when we were just fans of heavy music, before we started playing in a band. Once again choosing songs that have really stuck with us over the years, also choosing the songs that we felt would sound interesting when played in the SFU ‘death groove' style. Through the years of doing covers, many of our fans have inquired about us covering a Slayer or a Metallica song. It was really something we wanted to do for some time, those two bands being our biggest influences, as well as influencing a generation of death metal musicians. To sum it up... this is a tribute to honor the great teachers that have influenced us as well as the world of metal we all belong to. We hope our fans will enjoy. "
Track listing for "Graveyard Classics 3" will be as follows: More...

Anvil will make its late-night performance debut on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien on Tuesday, October 6. "The Tonight Show" performance is in support of the release of the band's new album, "This is Thirteen," which hits stores on Tuesday, September 15, and the "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" DVD set for an October 6 release date.
For this auspicious occasion, Anvil - guitarist/vocalist Steve "Lips" Kudlow, drummer Robb Reiner, and bassist Glenn Five - will perform the song that many consider their anthem, "Metal On Metal," which is included as a bonus track on the "This is Thirteen" limited edition vinyl. The band members will also get a little couch time with O'Brien.
"I am so nervous about doing the show," said Lips. "This is big, the biggest thing we have ever done on TV. I almost cried when my mom said she might not be able to stay up that late to watch it, so we're going to tape it for her. We can't wait to meet Conan, and I think Robb is pretty excited to meet Max Weinberg."
VH1 Classic Records, who is releasing "This is Thirteen," has just posted an exclusive premiere of the album on The Leak. Those who log on between today and September 16 will be able to stream the album in its entirety.
