Latest Anvil News
Below is our complete Anvil news coverage, including columns and articles pertaining to the band. Some articles listed may be indirectly related, such as side projects of the band members, etc.
Note: We began associating news directly with bands in late 2003. Therefore, earlier band news may not be listed on this page.
After the grey and miserable weather the day before, it was nice to awake on the final day of Graspop and be greeted with plenty of sunshine. While that may not have been the most metal sentence I have ever written, the roster of bands on display may well have been the most extreme of the weekend.
Like the previous day, we wasted a little time in the campsite before heading into the main area to catch the second main stage band, in today's case, Canadian heavy metal heroes, Anvil. Of course, everyone knows the story of Anvil by now, and perhaps that's made this set such a special one. From the opening guitar shrieks of "March Of The Crabs/666" there were smiles all around, not least from frontman Steve "Lips" Kudrow. The fact that everyone could see how much fun the band were having made the fans enjoy it all the more, which I'm sure in turn only fueled the smiles on the faces of Anvil. It might seem a strange word to use to describe a performance from a metal band, but Anvil are a really fun live experience. It's impossible to watch them and not headbang or raise the horns. Kudrow's interaction with the crowd is simply great, not least because he doesn't patronise the audience with cliche lines like "Are you ready to party?" I was also impressed by his ability to perform his guitar duties flawlessly, while still singing. Drummer Rob Reiner and bassist Glenn Five also deserve alot of credit, as their skills were on full display today, particularly Reiner's during, "White Rhino." Having only a fairly short set, only three songs from the group's new album, "Juggernaut Of Justice" were performed today, namely the title track, "On Fire" and "New Orleans Voodoo," but they all went down well with the crowd, who did their best to sing along to the latter. Another highlight came during Kudrow's guitar solo, which he did by playing his axe with a vibrator. An unorthodox method, but effective. As one might expect, they closed their set with the anthemic, "Metal On Metal," which went down a treat for all viewing. While they may not be the greatest heavy metal band to ever grace the Earth, they might well be one of the most enjoyable and were a great way to start the day.
It was then over to Marquee 2 for a little crossover thrash from D.R.I. (Dirty Rotten Imbeciles.) There were plenty of old school thrashers in attendance for them, complete with upturned caps and white shoes, and they all seemed to enjoy what they were witnessing. As much as I've always liked the band and crossover in general, I found watching them for as long as I did to be a little much, as most songs follow a similar formula, resulting in the performance getting a little boring after a short while. It seems I was not alone in this opinion, as there were plenty who came in to watch, then left after a couple of songs. D.R.I. are, like Anvil, all about having fun, but they don't possess the same stage presence. Songs like "Snap/I'd Rather Be Sleeping" and "Asleep At The Wheel" are always good to hear, but they felt rather tame today. Perhaps it would be better to catch them in a small club setting, because they weren't able to make it work in the Marquee. More...

By now, more or less every heavy metal fan knows the story of Anvil, thanks largely to the hit documentary movie, "Anvil! The Story Of Anvil." Whether it was the film or the music that made you a fan though, it's undeniable that Anvil are one of the most influential North American bands in the history of heavy metal. The seeds of the group were sewn back in 1973 when guitarist Steve "Lips" Kudrow and drummer Rob Reiner began jamming together, being influenced by the seventies heavy metal of Cactus and Black Sabbath. By 1978 the duo had formed a complete lineup which also featured guitarist Dave Allison and bassist Ian Dickson and Anvil was born.
The group released their debut album, "Hard 'n' Heavy" in 1981, initially under the moniker, "Lips," though it would later be released under the Anvil name. After the record's release, Motorhead mainman Lemmy invited Kudrow to become the band's new guitarist, filling in for the recently departed "Fast" Eddie Clarke, but the invitation was declined. Although it might not have been the wisest move financially, the next Anvil album would prove to be an underground classic in eighties metal, emerging in the form of "Metal On Metal" in 1982. The album included the superb title track as well as the Anvil live staples, "Mothra" and "666." The album was also a commercial success in the neighboring United States, where it reached number 91 on the Billboard album charts. Despite the success of the record, the band found follow up fame elusive, due in part to their restrictive record deal, which denied them the opportunity to sign with larger companies.
Although Anvil eventually broke free to sign with Metal Blade Records, they were still unable to regain the popularity which "Metal On Metal" seemed to promise. A slew of albums, including live records, were released throughout the eighties, nineties and 2000's but all with practically no success, and in some cases, almost no response, leaving the band to sometimes play to virtually empty venues. It was during the preparation for their thirteenth album that their biggest adventure would begin, as an old fan from the United Kingdom, who had since gone on to become a screenwriter, decided to make a documentary on the group. The documentary saw the band embark on a European tour with poor to mixed results, struggle to finance their new album, "This Is Thirteen" and eventually take to the stage in Japan to an overwhelmingly positive reaction. The film breathed a new life into the band, as audiences worldwide witnessed the struggles that come with the dedication to heavy metal, from mortgage problems to homelessness. Ever since then, the band has been performing regularly, appearing at such prestigious events as the Download Festival in England and filming a cameo for the movie, "The Green Hornet." Last week however, the band finally unleashed their highly anticipated new studio album, "Juggernaut Of Justice," which was released through The End Records on May 10th More...

Despite practicing and writing together the last two months, WARBRINGER has official announced that Carlos Cruz (Hexen) is their new drummer. The delay in announcement was out of respect to their old drummer and Carlos' former band mates and there was no question about Carlos' playing, songwriting or personality as the band ironically offered Carlos the spot in 2008.
"After years of putting forth nothing but blood, sweat, and tears into my tireless ambitions for playing music, I have finally found an outlet where no more time is wasted. It was flattering to have been approached by Warbringer the first time they made a personnel change in 2008, but this time around it couldn't have felt more like perfect timing," states Carlos. "They're a collective group of humble, open-minded, down-to-earth guys who share the same fanaticism for music as I do and are the tightest musicians I have ever played with. I've never felt so welcomed and inspired to move forward. Even past members of the band have congratulated me and it feels very much like family, not just another band. From some recent serious downfalls in my personal life came this beautiful opportunity and I couldn't be happier. We'll be seeing all YOU Warbringers out on the road soon!"
Carlos will be making his live debut in Mexico City on March 5th at the Eyescream Festival alongside Asesino, Anvil, Toxic Holocaust and Abigail Williams. WARBRINGER plan to record their third album in April with more live shows in May and June.

Drummer Robb Reiner concurs: "The new album is pure Anvil with a new fresh kick, very exciting. Looking to rocking with The End, putting the music where it belongs - in everybody's ears and face!"
