Century Media Celebrates 20th Anniversary

2008 has become an extremely exciting year in the history of Century Media Records, one of the world's most respected independent homes for heavy music, as the label is celebrating its 20th anniversary!

The company's Anniversary year started off with an extremely successful, first-ever yard sale/party at the Century Media office in Dortmund (Germany) in June, where several hundred guests partied out on exclusive live shows by Angel Dust and Turisas. A video with impressions from the event can be seen at this location. A photo gallery for this event can be viewed here.

To further celebrate this anniversary Century Media Records will release the very special 2CD compilation "Covering 20 Years Of Extremes" on September 15th in Europe and on October 14th in North America. The various artists covers-release includes 32 mostly exclusive recordings and will be available in stores for the price of one CD. Sticking to the "keep it in the family" slogan, CM approached their artists about covering songs from other acts within the label's repertoire and the response from the musicians was overwhelming.

Some choices were obvious and homages to the bands that influenced them, others were inspired picks. This combination ended up leading to a heavily entertaining and truly special final result across all sub-genres of heavy music.

Here is the tracklisting: More...

Arson Anthem Frontman Speaks On Bands Detractors

Keith Carman of Canada's Exclaim! magazine recently conducted an interview with vocalist Mike Williams (EYEHATEGOD) of ARSON ANTHEM, the hardcore punk-influenced project also featuring drummer Hank Williams III (ASSJACK, SUPERJOINT RITUAL), guitarist Phil Anselmo (PANTERA, DOWN, SUPERJOINT RITUAL), and bassist Collin Yeo. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Exclaim!: Do you have any aspirations for ARSON ANTHEM?

Mike: I'd like to inspire people. I can't say we're the first band to be doing this because there are a lot of bands that play heavy hardcore like a throwback to that era. I want to at least inspire people to seek out those older bands and do some research. That was such a great time for me growing up. I had no responsibility, running free listening to that type of music and riding my skateboard. Hopefully people who didn't live through it can do it vicariously. We have future plans and some new songs to record but first we just wanted to put out the record. Overall though, this is just about fun. The people who take it too seriously and say it doesn't sound like "Vulgar Display Of Power" don't get it.

Exclaim!: There's always backlash against a "new band" from established artists though.

Mike: Just because of the members of the band, people are gonna dig to find something to start an issue with. Phil's already getting the brunt of things. They kick down on him for no reason sometimes. It seems like some people don't even listen to the record before they judge. There's prejudice. I don't understand it. He gets these people who are jealous, hating on him or something. Some people hate for no reason.

Exclaim!: He is a magnet for controversy though, sometimes by his own actions.

Mike: Right. Sometimes controversy can be exciting but sometimes it's a pain in the ass. Sometimes I'd rather have chaos in my life than be bored but it can become too much. With the Internet now, everything is taken as fact. Rumours start and it's taken as truth, starting controversy. It's ridiculous. I don't get people who just bitch all of the time about what they hate. If they're doing that, they're bringing attention to it. Why waste your time? If you're gonna put energy towards something, support it. If you don't like it, ignore it.

Exclaim!: What do you have to say to detractors?

Mike: We just want you to listen and judge for yourself. We have a right to put out any type of record we want. Freedom of speech. I'm happy to be doing this now but at times I wish this band had been together in the '80s. It would have been taken in a different light. ARSON ANTHEM isn't that complicated of a concept. It's just raw, in-your-face music. I love a lot of different stuff but it's great to put out this record and say, "Hey, this is the kind of music that I love."

Arson Anthem Reveal Debut EP Details

ARSON ANTHEM — the new project featuring Philip Anselmo (DOWN, ex-PANTERA) on guitar, Mike Williams (EYEHATEGOD) on vocals, Hank Williams III (SUPERJOINT RITUAL, ASSJACK) on drums and Collin Yeo on bass — will release its self-titled debut EP on February 19 via Housecore Records; a label created by Anselmo focusing on Phil's side projects and other artists he believes in. The track listing for the effort is as follows:

01. Year Of The Fork
02. Doomed Morale
03. Bunker Life
04. Hammer Them Out
05. Wrecked Like Clockwork
06. Cops Shoot Coke
07. The Avoider
08. Sri Lankan Medication

After losing everything in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Mike Williams moved into Philip's spare apartment. The two spent countless hours listening to Philip's collection of early hardcore bands; the timing was perfect to remedy this cabin fever. They began jamming with III and Collin Yeo, and this proved to be the crowning accession to complete this exploit.

ARSON ANTHEM's mission is to re-introduce the roots of painful amplification, raw production, and a TRUE "fuck-all" attitude to a movement within a new generation that's lost the meaning of less complicated ventures. The byway is to be similar to the original brutality of bands like NEGATIVE APPROACH, POISON IDEA, HELLHAMMER, DISCHARGE and VOID, amongst others. ARSON ANTHEM will never give way to what the societal masses want them to conform to, as by example their previous musical incarnations.

Phil Anselmo Talks About Arson Anthem

DOWN/ex-PANTERA frontman Philip Anselmo recently spoke to MTV.com about his new label, Housecore Records, which will launch with an EP by ARSON ANTHEM, a group that features Anselmo on guitar, EYEHATEGOD singer Mike Williams, bassist Collin Yeo and SUPERJOINT RITUAL bassist Hank Williams III on drums. The group formed after Williams, who lost everything he owned in Hurricane Katrina, moved into Anselmo's spare apartment. They spent hours listening to Anselmo's extensive collection of early hardcore, and before long, they started jamming.

"Obviously Mike and I have a history, from high school, to touring together with EYEHATEGOD opening for PANTERA," Anselmo told MTV.com. "After Hurricane Katrina, I bailed him out of jail and put him up at Nodferatu's Lair [a space on Anselmo's property]. His apartment and everything he owned burned down in the post-Katrina riots. We always wanted to start a hardcore band. III and I were in SUPERJOINT RITUAL together, but I knew he was a drummer from when I first met him when he was in his teens. ... Collin was a young musician, he was in town at the right time, and it all fit perfectly."

ARSON ANTHEM will team up with RIGOR MORTIS for three shows in December:

Dec. 13 - Exit/In - Nashville, TN
Dec. 14 - Vino's - Little Rock, AR
Dec. 15 - One Eyed Jacks - New Orleans, LA

Arson Anthem Prepare To Release Debut

With the current roster of supposed "extreme" or "underground" bands repetitively dishing out modern metal regurgitation, something had to give; enter ARSON ANTHEM, the new project featuring ARSON ANTHEM — the new band featuring Philip Anselmo (DOWN, ex-PANTERA) on guitar, Mike Williams (EYEHATEGOD) on vocals, Hank Williams III (SUPERJOINT RITUAL, ASSJACK) on drums and Collin Yeo on bass. Basking in the telepathic glow of filthy, vicious '80s-era punk and hardcore, and yearning for a spark, this improper outfit has finally ignited said spark. Fueled by stale vodka and non-filters, they've finally wrecked into a bare-bones, distorted, bastard vacuum.

Eyehategod Frontman Released From Prison

EYEHATEGOD frontman Mike Williams has issued the following update:

"Hey kids — I'm out of jail, AGAIN. Just a minor technicality, though. It's all part of the game. Society fucks us all sooner or later in one way or another; but two months in Orleans Parish Prison really ain't nuthin' compared to the bullshit of everyday life. If, and I mean IF, you wanna play the Drug Game (all caps) you better be ready to deal with the consequences — it ain't NO joke. The time I did in Morgan City was like a fucking hotel stay compared to O.P.P. That's yer choice, though. Time runs out sooner or later, the hourglass is running for YOU, brothers and sisters. You get in the system, you STAY in the system. All is well though. I'm in one and a half pieces and that's good. Listening to DYSTOPIA and THE SMITHS and COCKSPARRER and drinking wine... Oh yeah, the judge, Honorable D.W., decreed that I'm to stay out of Orleans Parish for five years. Banned in N.O. So looks like no shows there for a bit, but there's always Jefferson, Covington, the world, etc."

Mike Williams previously spent 91 days in the Morgan City jail in late 2005. You can read his interview with Decibel magazine from December 2005 a few days after Williams made bail.

Eyehategod Reissue Cancelled

Canada's Moshpit Tragedy Records has scrapped the planned reissue of Eyehategod's "99 Miles of Bad Road" CD at the band's request.

In a recent email to Moshpit Tragedy, Eyehategod bassist Gary Mader wrote: "We have been debating on whether or not to do this re-release for several reasons. First and most important, we feel that Emetic Records has been better to us than any label we have dealt with, and for that we feel that we owe some loyalty to them when it comes to any release. Finding an honest label is a rarity these days, and since we've got one, we'd rather not ruin that relationship. Aside from that, we are just less than enthusiastic about releasing yet another retrospective project. There are already three full-length CD releases like this, and if I remember correct, we left these tracks off of 'Preaching...' because some of us thought they were substandard."

Moshpit Tragedy co-founder Rayny Forster commented in a statement: "We have no hard feelings and also want what is best for Eyehategod, Emetic Records and the fans. If they don't think it is a worthy release, we'd rather not release it. I have been in contact with Mike [Williams, Eyehategod vocalist[ and we still plan to release something from one of their many side projects in the future."

Eyehategod CD/EP To Be Release By Moshpit Tragedy

EYEHATEGOD have announced they will re-release their ultra-rare “99 Miles of Bad Road” seven-inch on CD through Canada’s Moshpit Tragedy Records.

The CD will feature re-mastered demo recordings of the songs “99 Miles Of Bad Road”, “Story Of The Eye” and “Jackass In The Will Of God” (originally released on Brazil’s 2+2=5 Records) as well as bonus live tracks and enhanced live video footage.

Regarded as the founders of American sludgecore, EYEHATEGOD have become one of the most important bands to emerge from the NOLA (New Orleans, Louisana) Metal Scene. EYEHATEGOD formed in 1988 and became known for their heavy, detuned and bluesy guitar riffs, combined with walls of feedback and tortured vocals to create a harsh misanthropic vibe.

Moshpit Tragedy Records (who’ve signed an exclusive N. American distribution deal with Cargo Music, Inc.) have also recently announced plans to re-issue crust legends EXTINCTION OF MANKIND “Ale To England” on CD with new cover art and bonus live tracks.
