During a press conference at the Sweden Rock Festival last friday, Def Leppard vocalist Joe Elliot was asked about Def Leppard's connection with the 1980s glam metal scene. Here's what he had to say:
"If you actually look at the way that the 'glam' bands, if you want to call it that, from Los Angeles dressed themselves up, they totally missed the point," Elliott replied. "When English glam bands from the '70s came on 'Top of the Pops', it was almost an afterthought to what they were actually doing — music always came first, and then they'd be like, 'What are we gonna wear?' . . . Bowie was very image-driven, and maybe the music came second, but a lot of the other bands, it was always about the music — the image thing was just something that they did to just upstage other bands on 'Top of the Pops'; that's what they used to do. So we were never driven to do the mascara thing or whatever these bands did. They didn't have any substance musically, I don't think, in comparison to us, so we didn't feel we needed to do it. Bands that do that are doing it to cover up the fact that there is no substance in their music. The only band — and I'm not saying it because we're here — the only band that did pull it off was [Finland's] HANOI ROCKS. I thought HANOI ROCKS were a good band, and they looked… Michael Monroe (Hanoi Rocks frontman) was one of the best… I would have shagged him. (Laughs) I like Michael, I think he's sexy, and I'm not gay. And I think Andy McCoy (Hanoi Rocks guitarist) does the best kind of Keith Richards... so much better than MÖTLEY CRÜE or POISON or any of those bands. They were real — the rest of the guys, it was all a bit fake for me."

DEF LEPPARD bassist Rick 'Sav' Savage is not looking his best when I meet him the morning after the band's intimate performance at London's Carling Academy Islington. There were just a few hundred invited guests and competition winners in attendance and Sav says: "It was like the club gigs we did before the debut album came out in 1980."
But Sav adds that he went on stage in some discomfort - and he's still suffering.
"I've been a little under the weather with a kidney infection which leaves me weak," he reveals. "When we came off stage I told the others that I wouldn't want to do that kind of show every night for a living!"
Adds frontman Joe Elliott: "There wasn't room to swing a cat on stage. It was a bit like Manchester United turning up at Wycombe Wanderers.
"Being so close together on stage you hear the sound in a different way. It takes time to adapt."
That's because the band swiftly rose to arena and stadium status - and have never looked back.
"We were never artists that looked to get our music across in an intimate setting," agrees Sav. "We thrive on playing big gigs."

Def Leppard's 14th studio album, Songs From The Sparkle Lounge, is set for release on April 29th in North America, the 30th in Japan and May 5th in the UK. The limited edition Japanese version will feature a bonus track, and a bonus DVD with behind-the-scenes interviews and music videos. The finalized tracklisting for the album is as follows: 'Nine Lives', 'C'mon C'mon', 'Go', 'Love', 'Cruise Control', 'Bad Actress', 'Hallucinate', 'Tomorrow', 'Come Undone', 'Only The Good Die Young' and 'Gotta Let It Go'.
Recorded last year during month-long stints at lead singer Joe Elliott's Dublin studio, the album's title refers to a backstage area called "The Sparkle Lounge" on Def Leppard's 2006 tour where the band would go to write songs. Tracks from the album have been described by the group as written in the style of 'Hysteria', with the production of High N' Dry.
"The whole record's got a great '70s feel," said lead singer Joe Elliott. "By our standards, it's a very different album as we've been very adventurous, musically, on certain numbers. On the album there are classic Def Leppard songs and then there's also tracks that are very new-wave influenced while others sound like middle-to-late '70s AC/DC. There will definitely be some moments on it where anybody that's familiar with our music will go, 'Whoa! I wasn't expecting that!'"
