Ten years ago, the metal underground was abuzz as a new, sinister style crept out of the humid Floridian swamps. While the dying thrash scene valiantly stood its ground against the glam rock onslaught, death metal fought in the trenches against the influx of flannel-clad grunge loggers streaming out of the Northwest. One talented musician experienced the fight firsthand, and upon returning to his home country of Sweden, decided to form a band of his own. His name: Peter Tägtgren. His band: Hypocrisy. Today, only the burnt husk of death metal remains. And while some of the names linger on, most are still revered largely due to misplaced nostalgia. Only a few still have an impact on today's extreme metal scene. None more so than Hypocrisy.

Penetralia was released in 1992, but it wasn’t until Osculum Obscenum hit a year later that the metal community took notice, as it was the first Hypocrisy effort to combine the sonic pureness of old-school death metal with the hysterical frenzy of the burgeoning black metal scene. After Osculum Obscenum, Hypocrisy emerged with the line-up familiar to fans. On 1994's The Fourth Dimension, Tägtgren, drummer Lars Szöke and bass player Mikael Hedlund began to develop their magic formula: death metal at heart but full of variation and entirely open-ended.

Abducted established Hypocrisy as a leading force in the Swedish scene. It included the hit "Roswell 47" and defined the amorphous Hypocrisy sound. Tägtgren displayed his newfound talent for singing, and the album as a whole broke out of the limited death metal "box," exploring everything from death metal anthems, to black metal blasters, to Pink Floyd-inspired suicide ballads. Abducted served as a warning for the waning mid ‘90s death metal scene – evolve or die.

In 1997 rumors circulated that The Final Chapter would be exactly what the name implied. Tired of shouldering the burden of writing and producing Hypocrisy’s material and wanting to further develop his side-project, Pain, as well as his studio, Abyss Studio, Tägtgren decided to call it a day after The Final Chapter; however, pleas from fans, the growing success of the band and the immense fun he experienced when playing live made him continue. Riding high on renewed vigor, Hypocrisy released Hypocrisy Destroys Wacken in early 1999 followed by the experimental Hypocrisy later the same year. What once started as a pure death metal act now appealed to death, black and gothic metal fans alike. A year later, Into the Abyss was recorded in just a few weeks, an exercise in spontaneity that resulted in a display of energy so raw it proved that although death metal in its original form might have stagnated, its spirit could still drive music to exciting new dimensions.

After encapsulating their first 10 years with 2001’s 10 Years of Chaos and Confusion, Hypocrisy returns with a disc Tägtgren brazenly calls the first "real" Hypocrisy record. The band have never shied away from writing challenging material that didn’t follow a prescribed formula. Catch 22 is sure to "catch" long-time fans a little off guard as the band explores the entire range of their extensive repertoire. Modern sounds and influences meld with the traditional Hypocrisy aesthetic to make an entirely new beast – crushing, groovy, catchy and, at times, sorrowful ("All Turns Black"). Hypocrisy refuses to release cookie-cutter albums, and that may be the catch 22 for fans; expect the same repetitive formula every album, and you’re bound to be disappointed; open yourself to the unfettered creativity of Hypocrisy, and anything’s possible.

Hypocrisy Begin Writing New Album

Swedish extreme metallers HYPOCRISY are currently remixing their album Catch 22 andhave issued the following update about it:

“As you’ve probably heard, we’re remixing and redoing the vocals on ‘Catch 22' (originally issued in 2002) and re-releasing it. Why?! Because we still think it is a great fucking album but it got slammed and misunderstood because of the vocal style and the drum sound and so on.”

“Everybody in HYPOCRISY is sitting home and writing for the next album right now and we wanna make sure it will be the best release we can do… When it will be out, we don’t know. Maybe in the beginning of 2009.”

Moreover, some metal fans so deeply embed themselves in one sub-genre that they might be missing some truly great stuff. This brief guide is intended to give you, the metalhead, a reference to some of those songs that “make” an album, that rattle around in your head for hours, and that warrant a deeper exploration of a band’s entire body of work. Furthermore, newer metalheads will find a few older songs from current big-name artists that are worthy of tracking down. More...

Pain Signs To Roadrunner Records

Swedish Death metal legend Peter Tägtgren signs to Roadrunner for his PAIN alter ego.

Since Peter Tägtgren appeared on the music scene back in the early nineties he has been a most extraordinary artist and producer. Known as guitarist and front man of the hard working touring band Hypocrisy, he is also known for his work as a Producer. He has his own studio, Abyss, located in the Swedish outback outside the small town of Ludvika. Hailed by alternative press as "the Rick Rubin of Scandinavian Metal" he has produced Celtic Frost, Immortal, Destruction, Dimmu Borgir, Dark Funeral, and Marduk and others. As if this weren't enough for this true Renaissance man, Peter Tägtgren could be seen and heard, not only live, or on TV, but also in the movies. He has delivered scores and has been seen in cameo roles in many Swedish hit films, including Sleepwalker","Nolltolerans" and "Exit"."

Pain, his more industrial and catchy project, was signed to Universal (Stockholm Records) in 1999. The band has obtained great chart entries, substantial sales and gold disc awards. Music channels have found themselves plugging their videos which were more brutal than anything they'd rotated up to then. As well as touring the Nordic countries, Pain has been touring throughout Europe with In Flames, Tiamat, Atrocity, Theatre Of Tragedy amongst others.

Pain's Roadrunner debut, which is the artist's fifth album and the first signing to the Bonnier Amigo / Roadrunner A & R joint venture, will be released in April 2007. On the new album which is still untitled we find a sharper production, heavier guitars, massive string movements and even more in your face vocals. Actually, on this album there is more of everything.

Release date and quite a few exciting guests performing on the album will be announced shortly."Pain has been a huge success in the Nordic territories and also here and there in continental Europe, but now the time has come to feed the planet with the music of this extraordinary artist" says Jesper Thorsson, A & R, who brought the artist to the Roadrunner.

Immortal Can't Wait To Finally Perform Again

Reunited Norwegian black metallers IMMORTAL have issued the following update:

"Some months have passed since we announced our reunion shows and we would like to say thanks for all the fantastic feedback we have received. Abbath and Apollyon (AURA NOIR) rehearsed together last weekend, and with Horgh just back from the U.S., we will start with full band rehearsals in January. Our first gig will be the Inferno Festival in Norway, and during the summer, we will play the confirmed shows in France, Finland, USA, Slovenia and Germany. We wish you all the best for now, and can't wait to finally perform for you again."

Upcoming IMMORTAL concerts:

Apr. 5-7 - Oslo, NOR @ Inferno Festival
Jun. 22-24 - Clisson, FRA @ Hellfest
Jun. 29-Jul. 1 - Helsinki, FIN @ Tuska Open Air
Jul. 13 - New York City, NY @ BB King's
Jul. 15 - Los Angeles, CA @ The Avalon
Jul. 20 - Tolmin, SLO @ Metal Camp
Aug. 2-4 - Wacken, GER @ Wacken Open Air

After 13 successful years as one of the pioneers of modern Nordic Black Metal, IMMORTAL disbanded in 2003 with a legacy of seven full-length albums, including the 2002 milestone, "Sons of Northern Darkness". Following a long hiatus, the band decided to enter the live battlefield again.

Come 2007, the world will experience a ferocious new IMMORTAL lineup, featuring Abbath, Horgh, and new bass player Apollyon from AURA NOIR.

"I needed a break," Abbath explained. "I think we all did! We were simply burnt out, and there was no point in continuing. We had a Norwegian tour booked, and had performed at some great festivals both in the U.S. and Europe, but it just didn't feel right any longer."

In the meantime, drummer Horgh toured with Sweden's death metal masters HYPOCRISY and released the "Virus" album, while Abbath has been working on his sideproject, I, featuring members of ENSLAVED and SAHG, along with IMMORTAL's original drummer, Armagedda.

"I'm really proud of that album," Abbath stated enthusiastically, "and it was an important album to make in order to be able to focus on IMMORTAL again."

Machines At War Tour Report

The show for Friday, Nov 17th, was slated for 8 pm and based on previous experience at the Palladium in Worcester, MA I figured I'd show up around 8.30. Alas, when I got in Hypocrisy were just starting their set, which meant I had missed Decapitated. The place was already quite full and the floor was almost jam- packed. When I first heard of this tour's lineup, I wasn't sure about the crossing point between the fans and how well they'd mix together but luckily the bands had a good number of devoted fans and one could easily mistake who the headliner is based on the crowd's cheering. Fear Factory "Machines At War" Tour Dates

Fear Factory has mapped out dates for a late-year traveling thrash caravan, with fellow metalists Suffocation, Hypocrisy, and Decapitated along for the ride.

The band will kick things off Thursday (10/26) near Sacramento, CA, with 37 stops around the continent planned through mid-December for the outing, which the group has dubbed the Machines at War tour.

"I'm really excited about doing a heavy tour like this," the band's drummer, Raymond Herrera, said in a press release. "A brutal line-up full of metal pioneers has been a long time coming. I guarantee a lot of our fans will agree. Plus you'll be certain to hear some Fear Factory songs that have not been played live in quite some time."

"Transgression," the band's eighth studio effort, and second for Liquid Eight Records, was released in August 2005. "The Best of Fear Factory," hit stores this September.

Fear Factory has toured extensively the last two years supporting "Transgression" and 2004's "Archetype," and spent large parts of 2005 supporting Megadeth on its Gigantour, along with Dream Theater, Dillinger Escape Plan and Nevermore.

The band is currently collaborating with photographer Omer Cordell on a photo book documenting last year's tour and its Gigantour appearances.
