Anthrax Taps Ex Bassist Danny Lilker For Shows

Today, Anthrax announces that, due to personal reasons, bassist Frank Bello will not be able to accompany the band on its upcoming South American tour, set to kick off April 13 at MXMF the Metal Fest. Filling in on those dates, as well as two U.S. festival shows in May, will be Anthrax founding member and original bassist Dan Lilker, marking his first appearance with the band in 40 years. Lilker, who co-wrote and played on Anthrax’s debut album "Fistful Of Metal," was also a member of Stormtroopers of Death with Charlie Benante and Scott Ian.

"I'm really looking forward to jamming with Anthrax again," said Lilker. "When we parted ways back in 1984, they told me to stick around because they might need me in 40 years."

Added the band, "We’re all very excited about with playing with Danny again, and we really appreciate his filling in for Frank. It’s been way too long since we played South America, so you don’t want to miss these shows, they’re going to be insane."

Lilker has not been idle over the past four decades, having played in a wide variety of bands. He was the bassist for the thrash/metal band Nuclear Assault and the grindcore band Brutal Truth. He also plays bass for Exit-13, Malformed Earthborn, The Ravenous, Overlord Exterminator, Venomous Concept, and more.

With Lilker on bass, dates for Anthrax’s upcoming tour are as follows: More...

Thrashback Thursday: Sugardaddy

Last week, we took a look at grindcore pioneers Napalm Death and their song, "Suffer The Children" from the "Harmony Corrupted" album. The record was their first with vocalist Barney Greenway (with whom you can see an exclusive video interview here,) and was more widely available in North America than their previous two albums, with many grindcore fans and favourites there citing it as heavily influential on the American grindcore scene. This week, we're going to stick with the genre and look at perhaps the most revered name from the other side of the Atlantic; Brutal Truth.

Brutal Truth was one of approximately 18 billion bands that Danny Lilker was a member of, forming the group after his departure from Nuclear Assault, (themselves covered in this column a few weeks ago.) They released their superb debut album, "Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses" in September 1992 through Earache Records, which was home to a number of grindcore favourites and associates, including Napalm Death, Carcass and Godflesh. It was followed eighteen months later by another awesome release, "Need To Control," after which they left Earache and signed with Relapse Records, widely considered to be Earache's American equivalent. With their new label, they released the somewhat experimental mini album, "Kill Trend Suicide" and another excellent full length, "Sounds of the Animal Kingdom" in 1996 and 1997, before deciding to call it a day, signing off with the double disc live and rarities album, "Goodbye Cruel World."

In 2006, Dan Lilker, Kevin Sharp and Richard Hoak, three quarters of the final lineup, along with new guitarist Erik Burke, reformed the band and contributed new music to the "This Comp Kills Fascists" compilation album. Fans were eager to hear a new full length from Brutal Truth however, which finally arrived in April 2009, under the title, "Evolution Through Revolution." The introduction to the album came in the form of the song, "Sugardaddy." It was a remarkable return, showcasing all the talent and trademark sound that made Brutal Truth one of the most recognisable names in grindcore.

The video threw fans a little at first, with its silent movie style showing the group turning up at the studio to play a song and the members ribbing each other, before a memorable riff peaks in, allowing Sharp's gruff scream to be unleashed, along with all the noise and fury of extreme music. It's riff laden, blastbeat filled and led by the iconic barking vocals of Kevin Sharp. It even features a groovy kind of bridge, before naturally returning to the explosive sound of before. The video even throws in the six second track, "Branded" as a bonus. It was a great return from a band that fans of extreme music had been missing and since Lilker's retirement in 2014, we miss again. More...

Cripple Bastards To Play Obscene Extreme Fest

Italy's Cripple Bastards has been confirmed for the upcoming Obscene Extreme Festival. The following press release was also issued about the appearance:

"You could say this is a 'grindcore hat-trick' as it is the third OEF appearance in 2014 for Italian hate mob Cripple Bastards after headlining the insane Obscene Extreme Asia in Tokyo and Obscene Extreme Australia in Melbourne earlier this year. But if you really want to see the Bastards play at home, then Obscene Extreme Trutnov is the grounds for the final massacre. They have been blasting the shit on stage since the festival's birth back in 1999 and raised the most infernal stage diving pits for countless times through the years that followed.

"26 years after their conception Cripple Bastards still hold the banner high as Italy's most hostile and aggressive grind/hardcore unit around. With one foot firmly in the past and all the vicious savagery of manic fast 80's hardcore extremity, Cripple Bastards are also charging forwards. With bloodshot eyes and a rabid 'get out and bite them' attitude, this band are ready to introduce their brand new 2014 full length 'Nero In Metastasi' on Relapse Records and they will consolidate their ongoing mission of bringing nihilistic, fuck-you-all, grinding hatred to every corner of an underserving mankind. Cripple Bastards will also be introducing for the first time ever on Trutnov's Battlefield their 5 piece line-up with new axeman Wild Vitto on second guitar which will only enhance their wall of hate/grind fury!"

The Obscene Extreme Festival 2014 will take place from July 16th - 20th, 2014, with full details available right here. The confirmed lineup includes the following bands: More...

Brutal Truth To Play Obscene Extreme Fest

The Obscene Extreme festival will be taking place from July 16th - 20th, with ticket information available at this location. Now the festival has announced several new additions to the lineup, including Brutal Truth and Morgoth. The festival organizers comment:

"Few bands represent Obscene Extreme as fully as US grind legends Brutal Truth – they've weathered break-ups and line-up changes, but never once have they halted in their mission to keep pushing the bleeding edge of grindcore.

"Never complacent, each steamroller of Brutal Truth album has furthered their sound and moved the goalposts for the whole damn genre in the process. Now bassist, founding member and extreme metal champion Dan Lilker approaches his 50th birthday, he's stepping back from music and his baby - Brutal Truth - will be no more.

"When the band returned in 2006, it was Obscene Extreme the following year that welcomed them back as very personification of the festival. Now, seven years later we'll bid them farewell with one final performance. Obscene Extreme 2014 – this promises to be unforgettable!!!

"Another band that will be stepping out onto the Obscene Extreme stage this year will be fathers of the German death metal scene, the mighty Morgoth. Originally split in 1998 after only three albums - the coffin-lid hammering of 1991's ‘Cursed,’ 1993's forward-thinking ‘Odium’ and their most divisive albums ever, 1995's post-punk ‘Feel Sorry For The Fanatic.’ More...
