Latest Mayhem News
Below is our complete Mayhem news coverage, including columns and articles pertaining to the band. Some articles listed may be indirectly related, such as side projects of the band members, etc.
Note: We began associating news directly with bands in late 2003. Therefore, earlier band news may not be listed on this page.
NOVA EXPRESS, the recently announced noise/darkwave/ambient project set up by SKITLIV front man Maniac (ex-MAYHEM), has undergone a name change. The band, comprising Maniac himself on vocals and guitars, GALLHAMMER's Vivian Slaughter on bass, sax and backing vocals, and SKITLIV guitarist Ingvar on guitars, will now be called SEHNSUCHT.
Commenting on the name change, Maniac's manager said "As the song writing progressed, the name NOVA EXPRESS didn't quite seem to fit the atmosphere Maniac and Ingvar were creating, so really it was a case of finding one that better suited what everyone in the band were setting out to ultimately achieve. The word SEHNSUCHT seemed much more appropriate and we decided to go ahead and make the change now, rather than wait until we get further down the road, when a name change would become more complicated."
The band is already signed to the UK's Cold Spring label and work on SEHNSUCHT's first album, which has a working title of "Narrow Birth", is expected to be completed at the end of this year.
Maniac will also shortly be completing work on the first SKITLIV album "Glem Aldri Korset." Aside from Ingvar, the doom/black/noise project includes SHINING's Niklas Kvarforth on guitars and sculptor Spacebrain on bass. The difference between the two bands was recently described by Maniac's manager: "Where SKITLIV is very much Maniac's unpredictable offspring, the band is all about extremes and expecting the unexpected, SEHNSUCHT, on the other hand, is its more thoughtful, introspective, sibling."
A track by SEHNSUCHT can be heard on the band's official MySpace page. "Immaculate Fix," which includes eerie backing vocals by CURRENT 93's David Tibet, is un-mixed and un-mastered and is still missing Vivian Slaughter's input.
Finnish metallers Adastra are putting the finishing touches on their sophomore album, "Death Or Domination," for a December 2008 release via Violent Journey Records. The CD is scheduled to be mastered on October 9 at Chartmakers in Helsinki, Finland by Svante Forsbäck. Adastra has also released the new album's track list which is as follows:
1. Locked On To You
2. One Chance
3. Death Or Domination
4. Man Mk. II
5. Helsinki 1939
6. Who Threw The First Stone
7. Devil Knows You're Dead
9. Wasted Life
10. The Longing
Adastra has been confirmed for the Jalometalli festival, set to take place August 15-16 at Club Teatria in Oulu, Finland. Also scheduled to appear are Overkill, Blitzkrieg, Satyricon, Mayhem, Sotajumala and Mortal Sin, among others.
According to the band's official bio, Adastra is "a modern heavy metal band that derives its influences from a wide range of class acts. Old-school-style clean-vocals of Ville Siikamäki, combined with the rapid leads and heavy riffs of Olli Anttila and Jari Hartman and the steady pulse of Santeri Vauramo's bass, controlled by the precise drumming of Jussi Ruokolainen, create the music of Adastra."
Next spring, Baltimore, MD will play host to Maryland Deathfest VII on May 22nd, 23rd, and 24th at Sonar. The following have been confirmed thus far, with many more to be added until the event:
Hail Of Bullets
Today Is The Day
Man Must Die
Count Grishnackh (real name Varg Vikernes) - the erstwhile Burzum musician who is currently serving a 21-year jail sentence for murdering Mayhem guitarist Oystein "Euronymous" Aarseth and setting fire to three churches in 1993 - has been denied parole by the Norwegian justice system for the second time.
Officials say that his escape from jail five years ago and ties with neo-Nazi groups have affected his chances of an early release.
"I haven't been in contact with them for a long time," Vikernes tells Norway's Aftenposten. "Police security services know this."
In the final part of Contraband Candy's Inferno Festival Special, they tap into the darker side of things. Legendary Mayhem front man Maniac, guitarist Kvarforth and bass player Spacebrain talk about hot new blackened doom/punk project Skitliv (meaning literally "Shit life").
There's grim talk of illness and manipulation from the ever-controversial Kvarforth and his main band Shining, and to round off this Unholy Trinity, Spacebrain talks about his future-trash sculptures and the soon-to-be-legendary "Spacebunker".
In related news, Contraband Candy will be going to the Tuska festival in Helsinki, Finland, once again bringing you all the madness, the drunkenness, the filth and the fury this metal fest has to offer. More...
Part 2 of Contraband Candy's "Inferno Festival Special" is now online and ready to view. It features interviews by Behemoth, Gorgoroth, drummer extraordinaire Nick Barker and hot newcomers Den Saakaldte, plus lots of this unique festival flavour and some excerpts from the Inferno Conference featuring Tom Gabriel Fischer of Celtic Frost and ex-Mayhem front man Maniac of Skitliv.
Contraband Candy is wrapping up production on their first-ever all-original-material festival special. To get you in the mood, they've released an action-packed trailer on ContrabandCandy.com (also embedded below/after the jump). The preview/trailer features interviews with King of Gorgoroth and Sahg, Nergal of Behemoth, Maniac, once of Mayhem and now with blackened doom-punks Skitliv, the outrageous and controversial Kvarforth of Shining and loads more. Portugal's AVA INFERI has set "Blood of Bacchus" as the title of its third album, due later in the year via Season of Mist. Songtitles set to appear on the CD include "Fireflies", "A Witch She Was, The Witch I Am", "Lights", "Last Sign of Summer" and "All the Colours of the Dark".
Commented guitarist Rune Eriksen (a.k.a. ex-MAYHEM guitarist/songwriter Blasphemer): "We, or perhaps I, must confess that this is easily the most interesting album I've been writing on ever. It surely has it all, and we are quite confortable with the outcome of everything to this point. From our more conscious moments of theatric gothic doom to enchanting Bacchanalian rituals. This is the album that will carve our name deep into the memories of moder earth. A pure and true moment of music. We are also in talks with some long-running and highly regarded studios for us to expand our universe even further." More...
MAYHEM guitarist/songwriter Blasphemer (aka Rune Eriksen) has decided to leave the band. His statement reads as follows:
"It is with these written words that I hereby retract myself from my position as the guitar player of Mayhem.
The main reason behind this conclusion lies in the fact that I simply don't see any future for me in the band anymore, at least not a future I'd like to participate in over the coming years. I've been playing my part in the band now for more than 13 years already, having composed, produced and released several albums with great vision, dedication and craftsmanship, to arrive at this crossroad of opposites. Sooner or later, all things comes to an end, and in my case, this circle is complete.
For some of you this might not come as the biggest surprise, as I've clearly stated in several interviews that I was not sure what the next step would be. These "hints" were partly rooted in the fact that our latest album fulfilled all of the expectations, visions and aspects of negativity that I felt I wanted to express with this band, and also, of similar importance, that I felt tired of both the touring aspects, amidst its turbulence and personal differences, and also my role in the band.
It has been a dark, devoted and spellbinding journey, and as some beings and entities develop, others remain the same. I've developed my essence. No questions. However, the legacy of MAYHEM will / must always remain what it always has been, and I wish to thank all parts involved and to wish them all the best for the future. I also would like to thank my followers over the years, from "Wolf's Lair..." to "Ordo...", my vision has been clear. I'm also sure the band will continue with a respectful formation, and that an eventual album will be placed "up there", where it (should) belong.
I have now personally chosen to focus on other paths in terms of creativity and vision. My "child of heart" AVA INFERI has already a busy schedule for the future and our third album is being crafted as we speak. I will also re-surface with new will and blood in a future extreme project. You have not heard the last of me, on the contrary. It's all about to begin.
Note that the few already scheduled shows will go on as planned WITH me."
Due to the recent amendments of the entertainment visa requirements set by the Australian Immigration Department, MAYHEM will not be able to get their visas approved in time for their scheduled Australian and New Zealand tour dates. As a result, tour promoter Just Say Rock in conjunction with MAYHEM, have decided to postpone the tour to later this year.
All parties are now working on new dates for the MAYHEM tour. The new dates will be released ASAP.
Anyone who wants a refund for their current ticket can receive one by returning it to the point of sale to get the face value refunded. However, tickets will still be good for the rescheduled show.

The band will first perform a local Washington, DC show on April 11th at the Black Cat along with label-mates MISERY INDEX as well as MAGRUDERGRIND and THE WAYWARD. Tickets are on sale now at this location.

The band will first head out on an U.S. headlining tour in April that will also include an appearance at Bamboozle Left in Irvine, CA. Then in early May, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN will head to Japan for “Extreme The Dojo 20” with the re-united AT THE GATES along with PIG DESTROYER and MAYHEM.

American documentary photographer Peter Beste's book "True Norwegian Black Metal" will be issued on May 15 via Vice Books.
In the last two decades a bizarre and violent musical subculture called black metal has emerged in Norway. It has its roots in a heady blend of splatter movies, heavy metal music, Satanism, Pagan mythology and adolescent angst. In the early-mid 1990s, members of this extremist underground committed murder, burned down medieval wooden churches, and desecrated graveyards. What started as juvenile frenzy came to symbolize the start of a war against Christianity, a return to the worship of the ancient Norse gods, and the complete rejection of mainstream society.
Peter Beste has spent the last eight years working in the milieu of this insulated and secretive community. Beste's access and insight has been absolutely without precedent, resulting in an amazing photographic journey. Beste has earned the respect and trust of this impenetrable, suspicious and often elitist community. With each visit Beste saw more, photographed more and eventually accumulated enough material for this book. "True Norwegian Black Metal" is a visual testimonial to this subculture. Peter Beste and editor Johan Kugelberg have created a unique photographic narrative that explores black metal from a truly visceral perspective.
With extensive contributions from the personal archive of Jon "Metalion" Kristiansen, publisher of the original Norwegian black metal publication Slayer magazine, a unique opportunity is here presented to see original artifacts and ephemera from this secluded rock community, and to read accounts of these events in the words of the people who were actually there at the time.
"True Norwegian Black Metal" offers confrontational live performance photographs of a savage subculture set alongside the stark beauty and natural allure of a landscape often shrouded in darkness.
The book is comprised of:
* 160 pages of photographs of the following bands/individuals: Nocturno Culto and Fenriz of DARKTHRONE; Necrobutcher, Hellhammer, Blasphemer, and Maniac of MAYHEM; Samoth of EMPEROR; Frost of SATYRICON; ENSLAVED; Abbath of IMMORTAL; Gaahl, Infernus, King, and Kvitrafn of GORGOROTH; Nattefrost of CARPATHIAN FOREST; 1349; DIMMU BORGIR; ILDJARN; AURA NOIR; and many more
* Interviews/quotes from Frost (1349), Abbath (IMMORTAL), Fenriz (DARKTHRONE), Gaahl (GORGOROTH)
* Essay by authors and Jon "Metalion" Kristiansen, publisher of the original Norwegian black metal publication Slayer magazine, including 32 pages of original artifacts, photographs, ephemera, and personal accounts by black metal's key figures from Krisiansen's personal archive."

Beste has scheduled a photo exhibition beginning May 8 at Steven Kasher Gallery in New York City, with London, Stockholm, Oslo, Berlin, Los Angeles shows to follow.

SKITLIV, the band formed and fronted by former MAYHEM vocalist Maniac, and featuring SHINING’s Niklas Kvarforth on guitars, is releasing two special editions on the UK Label Cold Spring. The CD version, due out at the end of February, comprises two studio tracks; one a special mix of “Slow Pain Coming” exclusive to Cold Spring, and the other, a version of “Amfetamin”, with guest vocals by current MAYHEM and SUNN0))) front man Attila, and includes bonus tracks from the band’s recent live performance at the Camden Underworld, London. Following later will be a limited 12” etched edition.
The release illustrates the subtle shift away from the narrow confines of Black Metal that Maniac has taken recently, expanding into the realms of the Doom/Noise genre whilst still maintaining his original roots. His cooperation with Current 93’s David Tibet and Andrew Liles is also highlighted in the intro to the live performance that was recorded by the two musicians especially for SKITLIV. The Tibet/Liles recording used for live performances differs from the version that they recorded as an intro for the “Kristiansen and Kvarforth Swim In The Sea of Equilibrium While Waiting…” MCD that was recently released by the band for their European tour.
Maniac commented “Justin of Cold Spring has been a friend for a long time now, and we have always talked about doing a one-off project together, but you know how it goes, you tend to get side-tracked by other things, or the time is not right for one or the other. Then he came up with the idea of the etched vinyl that was something that really appealed to everyone involved. It also came at the right moment in terms of us all having a free window at the same time, so we were able to re-record and re-mix a couple of tracks especially for him in between recording the MCD and preparing for the tour”.
On the February 06th episode of "Late Night With Conan O'Brien", The Dillinger Escape Plan will make an appearance as the musical guests. The band made the following statement: "We're playing Conan O'Brien on Wednesday February 6th....and it's not a joke. Really? Really. And you thought Cloverfield was the only time this year you'd be able to see New York get destroyed by monsters. Other guests include Heath Ledger's corpse and Asian Steve." In other Dillinger news, the band has been confirmed to play at the "New England Metal & Hardcore Festival" on April the 26th, which will raise hell at the Palladium in Worcester, MA. The Dillinger Escape Plan have also been added to the following Japanese shows with the reunited At The Gates, Mayhem and more TBA:
May 08th Osaka/Namba, JAP - Hatch
May 09th Nagoya, JAP - Club Quattro
May 11th Tokyo, JAP - Studio Coast
Five Finger Death Punch issue the following update:
"Hey everyone, we regret to inform you all that all of FFDP's current tour dates have been cancelled. Read the message below:"
"Due to concerns regarding vocalist Ivan Moody's throat, Five Finger Death Punch has cancelled all live performances through March 7th. Ivan has developed calluses on his vocal chords that, if left untreated, could lead to permanent damage. As a preventative measure, he has been advised by doctors to take 2 months of vocal rest and work on rehabilitating his vocal chords. All are confident that Ivan will make a full recovery and be back in top form in plenty of time for FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH's slot on the MAYHEM tour with SLIPKNOT and DISTURBED this Summer." More...
