Temples Festival Cancelled

Temples Festival - which was due to take place in early June and feature such outfits as Mayhem, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, and Carcass - has now officially been cancelled. This news arrives after several bands pulled out over the weekend, citing a lack of flight deposits, visas, and other pre-arrangements never being met. Festival organizer Francis Mace just posted this message online:

"After an arduous 48 hours of uncertainty, and with deepest reluctance we have been forced to cancel Temples Festival 2016. At the beginning of last week, the organisation we had onboard to finance the event pulled their funding, and with limited access to advance ticket sales and no sponsors to back us we have been unable to source the funding required to cover the overheads which would allow Temples Festival to go ahead.

"Following Temples 2015, we were left with a sizeable debt and as opposed to dissolving the company and declaring bankruptcy - I decided to take on the debts personally and subsequently pay off all our creditors in installments as quickly as possible, this meant bands, staff and contractors were all paid late - and it's had a crippling effect on both my professional and personal life as a whole - truth be told, I made a series of bad business decisions and dealt with the situation very poorly - which I take full accountability for.

"I've spent the past week trying to gain access to the funds we need to make this year work and avoid the problems we encountered following last year's event, with our financiers pulling their involvement - it's been an uphill battle, which I've fought to the best of my abilities - and unfortunately, have been defeated.

"Over the past weekend, I've been attempting to produce the festival's continuation on a 'scaled down' level so we can offer something for those of you who have purchased tickets, accommodation, transport etc and allow the bands who are touring, UK based etc - unfortunately this morning it became clear that even if we were to proceed as such, we'd be left with another huge debt and therefore unable to pay the bands, staff, venue, contractors and a number of other crucial overheads the festival relies on - thus repeating the mistakes that were made last year. 1985-1995: The Golden Age of Death Metal

Death should be credited with creating death metal, at least the old school style we recognize now, as they birthed the infamous Tampa, Florida sound. Bands such as Autopsy and Obituary—two of the forerunners—would not exist without Death. Death is not the true father of death metal, though. That distinction goes to Possessed. The California Bay Area group not only played a style of brutal, vicious metal, with loads of Satanic imagery, they also coined the term “death metal” on the “Seven Churches” album.

Around 1985, albums similar to “Slowly We Rot” (Obituary) and “Mental Funeral” (Autopsy) simply did not exist. Thrash was the fasted, craziest music around. Of course Possessed has already been mentioned, but the influence of Slayer, who obviously influenced Possessed, can not be under recognized. Where Possessed was different was they used a rougher production. Dark Angel, whose drummer, Gene Hoglan, would go on to be one of the most heralded drummers in the metal biz, certainly showed a good dose of Slayer in their sound. In the beginning, Slayer was nothing more than a faster, nefarious, more solo-oriented Venom protégé. More...

Fun Fun Fun Fest 2015 Day Two: Mayhem

All the best metal on day two took place in the clubs as part of the Nites extension at Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, Texas. Black metal Warfare II tour featuring Mayhem/Watain/Rotting Christ stopped at The Mohawk. Black metal is a seldom seen commodity at FFF, so it was exciting to see three legends in the black metal camp play. With Venom playing on Sunday, black metal has singed its mark on the annuals of the decade-long festival.

Gaia’s tears could not hinder music lovers from attending day two. I did not arrive at Auditorium Shores until around 4:30. By that time the rain had dwindled down to a drizzle but its effects were evident in the mud. The sets of major acts Jane’s Addiction, NOFX and Wu-Tang Clan monumentally clashed.

I did not stay for any of those bands. I left early to get down to the Mayhem show. Before leaving, I caught stoner comedian Doug Benson’s act. He reeled off funny slogans and got the crowd wired in to his Twitter page. He read off tweats from his followers in and out of the tent. He did not seem as stoned as he usually is, his delivery of jokes was too fast, but did beckon an E-cig filled with Mary Jane juice, which he graciously accepted and toked. More...

Watain Announces U.S. Tour With Mayhem

After a previous co-headlining tour with Mayhem back in January, Swedish black metal outfit Watain has announced a second leg of the trek, set to take place in November.

Featuring Rotting Christ as support, fans can expect another dose of wild blasphemy this winter. See below for all dates.

Watain will be touring in support of devastatingly awesome fifth full-length, "The Wild Hunt" (reviewed here), which was unleashed in 2013 worldwide via Century Media Records. The Black Metal Warfare tour part II will also be the final U.S. tour for "The Wild Hunt." Vocalist Erik comments:

"As with every album tour, it is always towards the end that the all the ingredients of our performances melt together properly and become most powerful. The Black Metal Warfare tour was a very special project for us and I am very pleased we get to end our Wild Hunt in the US with this second leg, with such a legendary package and in front of our ever faithful US militias!

"While Black Metal Warfare part II is of course a continuation of the first one, quite a few surprises can be expected, both in terms of the setlists as well as on the stage itself. All that is certain is that November shall wail and reek of burning, blistering, banging, bloody Black Metal War! A victorious ending before it's time to yet again embark on the ever winding paths into the great unknown..." More...

"Lords Of Chaos" Movie Adaptation Coming

Variety.com is reporting that a movie version of the infamous "Lords of Chaos" book is coming. The movie will be produced by Ridley Scott's Scott Free London and directed by Jonas Akerlund. Variety reports on the casting and storyline:

Rory Culkin (“Scream 4,” “Signs”) and Caleb Landry Jones (“X-Men: First Class,” “Byzantium”) are confirmed for leading roles in the film, with further cast to be announced shortly.

The pic follows 17-year-old Euronymous, who is determined to escape his traditional upbringing in 1980s Oslo. He becomes fixated on creating true “Norwegian Black Metal” music with his band Mayhem, and creates a phenomenon by using shocking stunts to put the band’s name on the map. "We are planning to join the tour in NYC. The Philly and Baltimore shows will continue with Watain and Revenge. 50% of the band is in New York awating the situation.

Blodhemn To Suopport Mayhem On Tour

Indie Recordings has checked in with the following announcement about Blodhemn supporting Mayhem on upcoming European tour dates:

"Since it's inception in 2004, Blodhemn has been working tirelessly to further the sound of black metal, and after the EP 'Brenn Alle Bruer' and debut album 'Holmengraa,' both critically acclaimed, the Norwegian one-man band is now preparing to unleash their yet untitled sophomore effort on Indie Recordings.

"In support of the record due out in November 2014 they are proud to confirm their first ever European tour as direct support to the legendary Norwegian black metal band, Mayhem!

"As a live band Blodhemn sports a four-piece lineup delivering a blend of no nonsense thrash and high octane heavy metal with its traditional old-school blackness. Blodhemn's coming record is as aggressive as ever, yet on a grander scale. It is simply more epic as the grim assault of fast, blasting riffs are contrasted with longer, melancholy melodies sounding like the ocean after a storm, beautiful but ravaged and hurting. The result is a collection of true Norwegian grandeur and raw, salted wounds, daring you to behold it and reward those that do." More...
