Sunday Old School: Avulsed

Throughout much of last year, the Sunday Old School column tried to look at bands from as many previously uncovered countries as possible, bringing the spotlight to groups from places such as Greece, Russia, Turkey and South Korea for the first time. This year we’ve been able to do this twice more by covering Salem from Israel and Bulldozer from Italy and now we make it a charm by heading to Spain for the first time to take a look at one of the country’s greatest contributions to extreme metal, Avulsed.

The seeds of Avulsed were sewn when vocalist, David Sánchez González, better known as Dave Rotten to fans, moved to the Spanish capital of Madrid following his military service in 1991. He was keen to play the music he loved, at a time when death metal was beginning to really take off and bands such as Obituary and Cannibal Corpse were making a name for themselves. He was joined at first by a guitarist known as, Javi "El Largo," before more members were recruited the next year, the same time that the collective settled on the moniker, Avulsed, though by this time, "El Largo" had left. Avulsed Erects The "Altar Of Disembowlment"

Two years after "Ritual Zombi," the Spanish death metal mongers from Avulsed return with a new recording - a five song EP entitled "Altar of Disembowelment" that marks the band's recording debut with new drummer Erik Raya.

Stylistically, "Altar of Disembowelment" continues the unmistakeable sound of Avulsed, forged over almost 25 years, but this time a bit heavier and darker than before. The EP was recorded in three different studios and mixed at Overhead Studios by Raúl Fournier "Furni," the ex-drummer of Avulsed between 1994-2004 for a later mastering at Unisound Studios by Dan Swanö.

Besides four original songs, the EP also includes a cover of Black Sabbath's "Neon Knight" that was initially recorded in late 2010 for a tribute album to Dio, re-recorded for this release. Due out September 9th, the track listing is:

1. To Sacrifice and Devour
2. Red Viscera Serology
3. Ceremony of Impalement
4. Tremble in the Darkness
5. Neon Knights (Black Sabbath) More...

Avulsed Cancels Breakup

After posting a message online the other day announcing the group had disbanded, Avulsed has now issued the following statement that the whole thing was a bad joke (despite the fact that later that same day the band posted a follow-up on Facebook stating it wasn't a Spanish fool's day joke):

"Avulsed did never split up!! This was a Spanish fool’s day joke!!

"In Spain, as well as in all Latin America (this is from Mexico to Chile), April’s Fools Day is celebrated on 28th of December. This is a tradition that comes back from more than 2.000 years already. For us this is normal, but not in the rest of the countries, so the joke worked out great, haha!! But now many people are still thinking we did split up, which also shows that bad news runs faster than the good ones, haha!!

"So for all you Avulsed fans, don’t worry, there’s Avulsed for many years (we hope!) and we’ll keep our true, honest and incorruptible attitude since day one back in summer 1991. Nothing has changed here!! We’re sorry for these that really wished our split-up was for real, haha, but you’ll have Avulsed for a long time and you’ll suffer more doses of our untrendy genuine Death Metal on your ears and eyes, you want it or not, haha!!

"For the rest, our truly dedicated fans around the world, thank you all for your signs of love and esteem for Avulsed and sorry if we made you feel sad for some hours, but well, a joke is a joke and as we say… sense of humor is the last thing we should loose in life, so we hope you’ll take it like this. Happy people lives longer than bitter ones. Death metal forever!"

Avulsed Calls It Quits

Update: the band has now stated this was all a bad joke. Read the update at this location.

The brutal 23 year ride is finally coming to an end: Spanish death metal outfit Avulsed is calling it quits. The band had this to say in an online announcement:

"It is with great sadness that we must announce the end of the Avulsed career after so many years. We know this caught you all by surprise, but some things happened during the last weeks inside the band and we couldn’t overcome with it.

"The main reason started with Erik Raya, a great drummer and a better person, but he didn’t really fit in the band’s dynamic, so we decided to fire him from Avulsed. Two of the members (Juancar & Cabra) weren’t happy with this solution and tired of having two drummer changes during the last three years, they finally decided to throw the towel and leaving for once and all.

"Tana, whose sentimental union to Cabra was always too strong, decided to leave as well, so this left Dave Rotten completely alone. For a moment, he wanted to keep Avulsed as a one-man band, but this would be too much work, so he will concentrate on his other musical projects from now on.

"We want to thank all our countless fans around the world for being so loyal during all this time and you were the main reason for us to keep it going on through all these years. Avulsed was born as an untrendy death metal band and died as an untrendy death metal band. We did lots of friends during our way, so to you all… KEEP IT BRUTAL!!" More...

Avulsed Parts With Drummer

Avulsed has officially parted ways with drummer Osckar Bravo, and the band comments on the situation:

"After a reunion maintained yesterday between all members of the band, it was decided that Osckar Bravo, drummer of Avulsed since April 2012, leaves the band due to professional incompatibilities.

"It was a decision, although meditated, very difficult for us, because there weren’t personal or musicianship factors involved, since Osckar, right after joining the band, quickly got integrated in the group and contributed to raise the instrumental level of the band with his undeniable quality as a drummer.

"Avulsed wants to thank Osckar Bravo in a very special way for letting us enjoy of his qualities as a musician and especially as a person in the over two years he’s been with us where he recorded one of the best albums of the band ('Ritual Zombi') and sharing with us great moments during the shows we’ve played together. We’d like to wish him the best luck not only in his other band Nightfear, but in any other musical project he might get involved. He’s got plenty of quality for that!!

"So, starting from today, Avulsed will search a replacement to get the vacant spot in a permanent way. We’ll let you know when we find a new drummer!!"

Avulsed also recently announced a "Carnivoracity" 20th anniversary re-issue on CD / 12" LP via Xtreem Music this coming August 1st. More...

Avulsed Re-Issuing "Carnivoracity"

Avulsed has announced a "Carnivoracity" 20th anniversary re-issue on CD / 12"LP via Xtreem Music. The label comments:

"Originally recorded in December 1993, the three studio songs (17 min.) were first released as a 7" EP in June 1994 by German label M.M.I. Records, making of this, the very first release of a Spanish extreme metal band by a foreign label and quickly becoming a collectable item. One year later, in 1995, this EP was re-issued on CD format by Repulse Records including 9 live bonus tracks from a memorable show of the band containing rare tracks, demo songs and a couple of covers of Demigod & Brujeria.

"This 'Carnivoracity' release has become some sort of a cult recording through the years showing the early days of Avulsed, that has kept this pure and genuine brand of Death Metal until today, an spirit and essence that makes this band one of the most authentic and respected European death metal forces, always keeping themselves away from commercial records labels. Avulsed To Record New Album

Avulsed is ready to hit the studios next week to record the 6th full-length in the band's career, which will be called "Ritual Zombi," which will be a conceptual work dealing with zombies. Xtreem Music comments on the pending release:

"The album will contain 9 new songs plus a cover song of Death's 'Zombie Ritual' as a tribute to the band that started it all for the real Death Metal sound (with permission from Possessed, of course!!). There will be also three instrumental songs (intro, interlude & outro) and this will be the first recording featuring new drummer Osckar Bravo.

"Recording & production will take place in Madrid at La Casa del Ruido Studios by Dani Blanco & Avulsed during February/ March and later will be mixed in Barcelona at Moontower Studios by Javi Félez. Then it'll be finally mastered in Sweden at Unisound Studios by mastermind Dan Swanö. Cover artwork will be done by Juanjo Castellano, who did a superb work for the latest Putrevore album and this made it clear for the band that he'd be the perfect choice to conceive the most putrid transcription of the band's sound.

"'Ritual Zombi' promises to be the strongest album of the band, gathering all elements that made Avulsed's style over two decades, a respected force with thousands of diehard fans around the world, which for sure won't be disappointed with this new work, that will be another step in the band's fight to keep the true spirit of Death Metal, free of clichés, labels & trends, staying loyal to what the band has been playing since day one back in 1991, which is: DEATH METAL (in bold letters!!). Avulsed To Present New Drummer At Hellfest

Avulsed has issued the following announcement about presenting the band's new drummer at the upcoming Hellfest 2012:

"After long consideration, Avulsed has finally decided to officially present new drummer Osckar Bravo at Hellfest, this being the best possible opportunity to show all our fans the capabilities of our new band mate.

"There was an initial chance that Riky (ex-drummer) would play at Hellfest in case that we didn't have a drummer ready for it, for which we're very grateful, but since the adaptation of Osckar has been nothing but excellent, the band feels ready to face the challenge of having his official debut at such big event.

"In the meantime, Avulsed has been confirmed to perform as headliners on the next edition of the Repulsion Fest. which will take place in Sevilla (Spain) on 29th of September along with bands like EXTIRPATING THE INFECTED, NO FATE, PURULENT NECROPSYS and DIGGING YOUR TOMB."

If you still haven't seen Osckar in action, you can still watch this video of his first practice with the band below. Further details on the upcoming Hellfest can also be found at this location. More...

Avulsed Splits With Drummer Ricardo Mena

Spanish act Avulsed has issued the following announcement about splitting with the band's drummer:

"We're sorry to communicate you that since last 20th of March, Ricardo Mena (Riky) is no longer the band's drummer. Due to differences on how to deal with different internal issues within the band, we've decided, after a reunion, that the best thing for both parts is not to continue together. No hard feelings, beyond the sadness that all this means for us all.

"Due to this, we must announce the cancellation of the performance on the two upcoming festivals in April where Avulsed was going to participate: Thrashway Fest (Oviedo) and Barroselas SWR Fest (Portugal). However, there's a possibility that the last show with the current line-up with Riky might happen at Hellfest in France.

"We just want to thank Riky for his eight years of total devotion and profesionalism as a musician and his friendship, that we'll keep, of course. And to wish him the best both on personal and professional on musical matters."

Maryland Death Fest IX Day Three

The ninth annual edition of the Maryland Deathfest has grown into a four day affair, spanning Thursday night, Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. Despite a last minute scare with Sonar possibly closing down, the even took place at Sonar, with the outdoor stages at either end of a closed off Saratoga Street.

This year, Metalunderground.com writer Emily Hingle (aka Buick McKane) was on hand for the entire festival (you can read her reports from day 1 and day 2) and Doug Gibson (aka deathbringer) was present on Saturday.

After an adventurous drive around the venue a few times trying to figure out how to reach the parking lot with Saratoga Street closed off, I finally arrived in time to see Creative Waste’s set. Sonar is a dark venue at any time, but entering from the afternoon sunlight, it seemed pitch black and took a few minutes to adjust.

Creative Waste took the stage and their sound was painfully loud. And they’re only a three-piece band, with a vocalist, guitarist and drummer - no bassist. The Saudi band described themselves as grindcore, but sounded more like a very hardcore influenced brand of metal. The music wasn’t my thing and the excessive volume that was not pleasant even with ear plugs sealed the deal for me.

Mammoth Grinder took the stage next, and I didn’t recognize them at first. The first few songs sounded a bit thin and reminded me of Prong, who while I enjoy, always had a weaker sound as a 3-piece. A few songs into their set, things got heavier and thrashier, evoking thoughts of Slayer. Then I recognized them as the band I saw at SXSW earlier this year. The remainder of their set was fast and heavy and made Mammoth Grinder the best band I witnessed on the inside stage that day. More...

Maryland Deathfest To Go On At Sonar As Planned

The Maryland Deathfest organizers report that "Sonar will be re-opening before MDF, and technically they already have."

As previously reported, the venue of the Maryland Deathfest was up in the air when Baltimore's Sonar nightclub failed to renew their liquor license and closed its doors.

The organizers futher commented: "These last couple of days have been incredibly confusing and stressful, but we are currently back to the regularly scheduled program. And don't worry, beyond plan B is a plan C, because that's how we roll. See you in a couple of weeks."

As such, the set times that were previously announced should now hold.

Here's the updated flier: More...
