Mainman Nergal was only 14 when he formed Behemoth back in 1991. The three- piece quickly made a name for themselves in the black metal community with their second demo “From The Pagan Wastelands” (1993) and mini album “And The Forests Dream Eternally” (1994).
Behemoth’s first LP “Sventevith (Storming Near The Baltic)” came out through the Polish underground label Pagan Rec. in 1995 and gained a positive response which resulted in a new record deal with the German label Solistitium Rec. Their second album “Grom” saw the light of day in 1996 and remains their most controversial release to date, mainly because of the incorporation of female vocals and acoustic guitars.
The third release “Pandemonic Incantations” saw the addition of the very talented drummer Inferno and marked the band’s vastly improved musicianship and production. In the fall of 1998, after an extensive European tour, Behemoth signed to the Italian label Avantgarde Music. With the highly successful “Satanica” (1999), the group ventured into the realm of death metal by replacing the raspy black metal screeches with a forceful growl. Thanks to this remarkable release and the attention it gained, Behemoth secured two European tours with Deicide and Satyricon.
In the years to follow, Behemoth maintained the same pace by releasing a consistent string of intense album, which further combined their early black metal influences with the ferocity and technicality of death metal. With “Thelema.6” (2000) the band continued to expand musically and lyrically. Vocalist and lyricist Nergal was aided by poet Krzysztof Azarewicz in his efforts to achieve a sophisticated and intimate obscurity. “Thelema.6” was the first of Behemoth’s albums to be released in U.S. through Olympic Records.
Touring opportunities with bands like Nile, Morbid Angel and Carpathian Forest began to pour in. In 2001 the band made its debut at the most prestigious European summer festival- Wacken.
“Zos Kia Cultus (Here And Beyond)” was released in 2003 and furthermore established the band’s undeniable potential and creativity. Rave reviews started to flow in and Behemoth made its North American live debut at the New Jersey March Metal Meltdown festival. The several nationwide tours that followed ( with bands like Deicide, Amon Amarth, Danzig and Six Feet Under) and the release of the Conjugation EP, all helped make 2003 a breakthrough year for Behemoth.
In 2004 they released a DVD called Crush.Fukk.Create, followed by their latest studio album “Demigod” ( featuring guest appearance by Nile’s Karl Sanders). Again, it received great praise in the media. In addition, the group’s first video “Conquer All” debuted on Headbandger’s Ball.
In early 2005, Behemoth embarked on an extensive North American tour with Suffocation, King Diamond and Nile.

Last week on the Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, we reviewed a series of new full-length releases. This week, we were forced to settle for mere songs, tastes of albums soon to come.
Co-host Mike Smith (OverkillExposure) gets things started by reviewing the new Entombed A.D. song "Bedlam Attack," off the forthcoming album "Back To The Front.” You may also know this band as Sweden’s long-running pioneer act Entombed - creators of the death metal classics “Left Hand Path” and “Clandestine,” and “death ’n’ roll” landmark “Wolverine Blues” - and Mike offers his take on the legal dispute that led to the slight name change.
Then co-host Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) reviews the new song "Thirst," off the imminent album "From Parts Unknown” by Buffalo, New York’s eclectic hardcore punkers Every Time I Die. As with Entombed, this band has never been too shy to experiment stylistically, and Kevin evaluates the quirky evolution leading up to this current work.
Finally, we react to a bizarre international story. Poland’s Behemoth just can’t seem to stay out of trouble these days, and due to alleged “wrong visas,” the band was recently detained and deported from Russia while on tour. Though Randy Blythe’s (Lamb Of God) 2012 fate in the Czech Republic was thankfully averted, we can’t help but feel troubled over the occasional pitfalls of travel in this part of the world - and if frontman Nergal’s account is accurate, the jail accommodations were, to put it politely, less than sanitary.
The Polish news source ZNAK reports that Behemoth was released and deported by a Russian judge in Yekaterinburg after being detained for visa issues. The article indicates (translated from Polish using online resources) that this morning, after being detained the previous evening, a judge decided to release and deport the musicians for failure to obtain a non-business "humanitarian" visa after possessing a valid business visa from the Russian consulate in Warsaw.
The publication reportedly interviewed band leader Adam Michal Darski (a/k/a Nergal), who described the conditions of confinement, stating that the band was held "in a very small room" the size of about a "half meter." The walls were "smeared with feces" and the band was forced to urinate in plastic bottles when denied a request to use the toilet.
Darski was asked whether the band had any plans to issue a complaint with the consulate in Warsaw, to which he replied "First, we want to relax." When asked about further tours and shows in Russia, he replied (translated via online resources): "I think now is not the best time to travel to Russia. So, on May 25 we had a scheduled concert in Moscow. Apparently, the show will have to wait until next time."

Update: the band's Facebook page has now posted this message (translated from Polish): "Looks like it's going to be a normal arrest. They'll take our phones soon. At 9am we'll have a court case, then a judgement and maybe a deportation."
A post on the Behemoth Facebook page from Nergal has stated the band is being detained in Russia due to some sort of visa problem. A translation of his statement reads:
"We've been stopped by the immigration services for 'wrong visas'. When I said that we will not move an inch from the club without someone from the polish embassy, they threatened to force us out. They took us in a bus, accompanied by 10 officers, to the building of Federal Migration Service.
"We tried to reach polish embassy in Jekaterinburg but no one is answering the phone. If possible - please copy this message and pass it everywhere you can. We may expect a multihour hearing. The concert is off for sure. The only thing we want is to get back to the hotel safely and then - to Poland. No matter how hard we try - we cannot pass it all. Regards."
This is just the latest in a string of misfortunes for the band, whose front man Noergal was previously put on trial for tearing up a Bible on stage during a concert. Nergal also recently beat leukemia and recovered to full health.
Behemoth's latest album "The Satanist" (reviewed here) was one of our most anticipated releases of the year and is out now.

Come And Take It Productions started Texas Independence Fest in Austin as a way to bring together friends and family in a celebration of Texas. Previous years featured performances by Down, David Allan Coe, Upon a Burning Body, Dixie Witch and many more. This year's festival saw a mix of local and touring acts. Wayne Static of Static-X and We Are The Riot (members of Coal Chamber) brought familiarity to the day's acts, while The Metal Alliance Tour featuring Behemoth, 1349, Inquisition, Goatwhore and Black Crown Initiate painted the afternoon sky black.
The doors to Emo's opened at noon and I arrived around a quarter to 2 in time to catch Denton, Texas melodic death/black outfit Tarim. According to a Come And Take It personnel, Tarim won Come And Take It's battle of the bands, which landed them on this spot. Ten hours is a lot of music to take in. This was my time to coordinate interviews times, but the band, playing material from "The Philosopher King," caught my ears and kept them. They definitely deserved to be on Emo's big stage, and would have proved a tighter fit to the evening's black out.
I missed Casket of Cassandra but caught the following band, Headcrusher. Former residents of Colombia , these deathly thrashers have become a staple in Austin's metal scene. The five-piece band often plays Come And Take It Production shows commonly held at the Dirty Dog Bar. Although this was the first time I caught their act on Emo's stage, it wasn't the band's largest crowd. Festival crowds brought in several times more people than the couple hundred watching the band's mid-day performance. It doesn't matter how many people watch this group; Headcrusher played hard and aggressive. Fans of Gothenburg-style metal such as Dimension Zero, Dark Tranquility and Carnal Forge take note of Headcrusher. More...
The promoters of the New England Metal & Hardcore Festival, currently gearing up for the sixteenth consecutive annual run of the event this April, have finalized this year's lineup with the addition of Detroit party crew Wilson.
Additionally, three local bands won the recent Break Thru Music's Battle for Metal Fest competitions for a chance to perform at the event. This now adds Death Rattle to the Thursday lineup, Carnivora to Friday's, and Acius to the bill on Saturday.

This Saturday, March 22nd will also mark the finals for this year's ongoing Break Thru Music Presents: Battle for Metal Fest competition, the action going down at two locations simultaneously. Cradle of Filth frontman, Dani Filth has posted an update from the road, as the band tour across Europe with Polish extreme metallers, Behemoth. His message reads as follows:
"The co-headline European tour with BEHEMOTH is going great, from a sold-out show at the London Forum to a furious headline gig in Paris, it's been a f**king blast! Yesterday we had a quite a packed day off metro-ing it around Paris, photos of which I will be posting over the coming day or so as I collate them on my travels. Keep those peepers peeled.

00:02:25: After years of experimentation with mixed results, Sweden's The Haunted teased old school fans with the thrashy, aggressive three-song EP "Eye Of The Storm" (reviewed here). The digital 7' is the product of a revamped lineup that sees former vocalist Marco Aro and former drummer Adrian Erlandsson rejoin the fold.
00:19:45: Next up is the new EP "Clear" from Bethesda, Maryland's Periphery. The popular "djent" standard bearers crept out on a limb with this effort: each song is a solo composition by separate band members, allowing each to explore his own songwriting style, which distills the band's influences and various elements as a centrifuge would separate blood cells. "Clear" may encounter a split fan reaction, but as Kevin will warn you, it's to be taken not as a change in direction, but as an experimental exercise of freedom.

An excerpt from the interview follows:
Extreme art should be shocking and provoke a reaction. I really hope we are viewed as more than just a black metal band. We are an extreme band that can communicate our ideas on so many levels. Extreme metal music these days is often only extreme by definition. It is a never-ending process of striving for perfection. Too many bands are chasing this and the scene is becoming like the X-Factor for black metal. There is no danger and unpredictability anymore.
The majority of death metal bands from the U.S.A are so generic, they all sound perfect. It is fast and technical but there is no substance. Bands forget about emotion when they strive for perfection. You should be driven by your intuition and not just be concerned with shredding on your guitar. Perfection is boring and uninspiring. When people listen to "The Satanist," it will stimulate them in many different ways.
I saw Cabaret at the theatre recently and it was extremely moving. Extreme art must make people uncomfortable whether it is music, art or films. It has to be thought provoking. It takes a lot of energy for me to do this. I remember after my transplant when we started playing shows again. There was a time I thought I was going to pass out on-stage because it was so taxing playing the show and I did not have as much energy as before but now I am ready. The latest round of additions to the continually-expanding lineup for 2014's installment of the New England Metal & Hardcore Festival has been disclosed, including Massachusetts' own '90s hardcore punk act, Sam Black Church.
Confirmed as one of the main headliners of the event's third night, Saturday, April 19th, Sam Black Church's set at NEMHF 2014 will mark only the third performance since the group initially disbanded at the turn of the century, and first in Central Massachusetts since the late '90s.
Stated the band upon being asked to take part in the massive event this Spring: "It is amazing what the man we used to know as Ogre has done with the New England Metalfest! We are fucking excited to be a part of it once again!"
The organizers of the fest comment: "Formed in Boston, in June of 1988 by Jesse "Jet" Crandall (vocals), Ben Crandall (guitar), Richard G. Lewis (bass), and J.R. Roach (drums), Sam Black Church was known for their energetic live performances, playing a frenetic blend of hardcore, metal, and thrash. Over the years sharing bills with bands as diverse as Bad Brains, Clutch, Motörhead, Cro-Mags, Fear, and Helmet, they were one of the most popular hardcore bands in the Northeast United States during the 1990s. After releasing three full-lengths on Taang! Records, they left to join Wonderdrug where they remained until they retired in 2000 after releasing a total of seven albums. Since disbanding, Sam Black Church reunited for a sold-out show on September 22, 2007, at The Roxy in Boston, and played a another sold-out performance at Hometown Throwdown #16 with The Mighty Mighty Bosstones at House of Blues in Boston on December 29th, 2013. A documentary of their career by Duncan Wilder Johnson entitled Leave Behind a Groove in the Earth is scheduled for release in 2014."

Back in 2011 and 2012, MetalUnderground.com decided to devote all our Sunday Old School columns in February to some of the most important, influential and most popular bands in the history of black metal, which we appropriately named, "Black Metal History Month." This year, we’ve decided to bring back the feature and, with their new album, "The Satanist" out tomorrow in Europe, who better to kick things off than Poland’s own, Behemoth?
Behemoth was formed in 1991 in the city of Gdansk, the fourth largest metro area of Poland by vocalist/guitarist, Adam "Nergal" Darski, Czech born drummer, Adam "Baal" Muraszko and a second guitarist known as, "Desecrator." The trio recorded three demos in their early days, "Endless Damnation," "The Return of the Northern Moon" and most significantly, "From the Pagan Vastlands," which featured a cover of the Mayhem song, "Deathcrush" and was released two months after it was recorded by Polish label, Pagan Records before it saw a release in the United States via Wild Rags. By 1995, Desecrator had left the group, leaving Behemoth as a duo, though the two were nevertheless ready to record a full length studio album for Pagan Records, which was released that year under the title, "Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic)." It was given mediocre reviews by the critics, though they soon won them over with their second album, "Grom," which hit the shelves in January of 1996. This sophomore album saw the band bringing in a much wider range of influences and sounds, including the use of female vocals and earning them the respect of many members of the metal press in the process.
It was on their next album, 1998s "Pandemonic Incantations" that the band began to develop the blackened death metal sound which they are known for today. They toured for two solid years in support of the record but due to a lack of promotion from then label, Solistitium, the album did not fare well commercially. Behemoth decided that a change was needed and signed a new record deal with the Italian label, Avantgarde Music, through which they released their fourth album, "Satanica" in 1999. The label seemed very willing to promote the Polish outfit and booked them tours supporting American death metal legends, Deicide, as well as Norwegian black metal outfit, Satyricon. They were soon forced to make lineup changes however, which saw the recruitment of bassist Marcin "Novy" Nowak and guitarist, Havok. More...

Behemoth has posted a brand new track from forthcoming album, "The Satanist." The track is entitled "Ora Pro Nobis Lucifer" and is accompanied by a lyric video that includes artwork and text from inside the digipak booklet.
"Ora Pro Nobis," which is Latin for "pray for us," features lyrics penned by Nergal, along with Krzysztof Azarewicz. Check it out below.
