Helix Frontman Talks About Late Quiet Riot Singer

HELIX's Brian Vollmer has posted the following update:

"Last Sunday lead singer of QUIET RIOT, Kevin DuBrow, was found dead at his home. We would like to express our condolences to his family.

As most of you know, we toured with Quiot Riot and WHITESNAKE in the summer of 1984 through 20,000 seat halls all across the United States. I became friends with Kevin during that tour, and two years ago we met up again at a festival we were playing together.

This week John Hockley came to Planet Helix and we went through the archives to pick out some of my Super 8 home movie footage I had of that tour as well as a couple of clips that I filmed with my Sony cam the last time I saw Kevin and Franki."
You can view that footage below... More...

Helix Share Hopes For 2008

Canadian rock legends HELIX have issued the following update:

"This week we were confirmed for Molly Blooms in Kitchener for November 10th and in Thunder Bay on December 23rd at the Prosvita Club (a GIANT presents). We're asking fans in both those cities to phone their respective radio stations and request 'Get Up!' to radio. In Kitchener it's KOOL FM at 514-884-4470 and in Thunder Bay it's The Giant at 807-344-2000. Then on September 29th we're in Port Elgin at the Provisa Club, as part of a 94.5 The Bull Presents. You can only win tickets to this gig. To request the song phone: 519-357-1310. We're on heavy rotation here, let's keep it going with lots of requests!

Now that summer is over, we will be aggressively looking for dates for the upcoming six months. The CD is just starting to kick in and we're all hoping that 2008 is going to be our best year yet. Our goal next year will be to return to Europe and to play more US dates. In the past couple of years we've done a couple of runs south. Over the past two years we played Florida, Ohio, and New York State and coming up in October we have dates in Wisconsin and Minnesota. I've talked to Tom Mathers from Perris about pushing us to get on next year's Rocklahoma and also about the possibility of putting together some Texas dates. Texas was the state that broke Helix and we had a strong following there for many years. I'm also talking with agents/promoters about getting Helix back over to Europe. A couple of weeks ago Sanctuary (our European record company) was bought out by Universal. Steve Hammonds, who signed Helix to the label, has been made president of Sanctuary Division under the Universal label. This could turn out to be a very good thing for us, as the company has been somewhat in limbo for about a year. We've been getting a fair number of orders for the new CD from Europe, and excellent reviews from the European press, especially on Sleazemetal.com (Sweden), Strutter Magazine (Germany), and This Is Rock (Spain). Steve Price of ARFM Radio and Total Rock Radio, (both from the UK) and Heavy Generations from France have all been giving us airplay. On Monday I'll be interviewed by telephone by Pierre from Heavy Generations for an interview to be played at a later date. C'est la vie!"

Helix Enlist New Bassist

HELIX mainman Brian Vollmer has issued the following update:

"After more than four years with Helix, Jeff Fountain (bass) has decided to leave the band. Jeff is also the bass player for London-based BOBNOXIOUS (band led by RAZOR singer Bob Reid), whose new CD Rockaholics is fast taking off. The band is doing so well, in fact, that it became impossible for Jeff to commit to both projects, and he decided to step aside. All of us in Helix wish Jeff the best of luck-we’ll miss him. Ironically Jeff will be just finishing up touring in western Canada with Bobnoxious when we’ll be coming out at the end of May. Hope everyone comes out to support both bands.

Replacing Jeff is Paul Fonseca. Paul is a welcome addition to the band. Paul is a versatile and skilled player who has played with both Rick (VanDyk - guitar) and Ned for 8 years. A life long musician, Paul has played in some of the coolest Toronto area bands while paying his dues. He has also worked with several recording artists, ie. HONEYMOON SUITE. A talented vocalist as well as a powerful stage performer, Paul currently enjoys performing in a number of diverse groups including SANDMAN. Welcome aboard Paul!"

New Helix Line-up Hits West Canada

The following update has been posted on the official Helix website:

Over 630 rabid Helix fans turned out last night (at Hot Stix in London, ON) to rock on with the new line-up of the band. Thanks to the "Helix Army” we sold out the joint. It was our first time playing since last fall and we were all itchin’ to get at it, as they say. Some of the new songs in the set include 'You’re A Woman Now', 'Billy Oxygen', and 'Kiss Yer Ass Goodbye'. Brian Doerner (drums) kicked ass and I fell on my ass (twice!) during our 90 minute set. I have the walnut-sized lump on my right elbow to prove it. Watch out Alberta-by the time we get there in April we’re gonna be tearin’ it up! We now have new tour shirts and posters designed for our upcoming April tour of Alberta. Once again the shirts have been designed and pressed up by D.N.A. silkscreening in Kitchener, Ontario. D.N.A. has won awards not only for their designs but also for their quality shirts. The posters were put together by Sylvain Vallee, who also helped design the Rockin’ In My Outer Space CD cover.

To view the shirts head here.

Upcoming Helix live dates are as follows:

Apr. 06 - Calgary, AB at Shamrock Hotel Big Band Blues
Apr. 07 - Airdrie Airdrie at Twisters Lounge
Apr. 08 - Okotoks, AB at Okotoks Inn
Apr. 09 - Hanna, AB at The New National Hotel

Hee haw! Alberta here we come! The April tour out west is now booked. The only mystery date is April 13th, which will see us somewhere in the Calgary area, or heading east to Saskatoon. In that case I'll have to change the name of the tour...! A new addition to the HELIX team on this tour will be old friend Tony Denedeiros, who will be running sound. Tony has run front of house for TROOPER, HEADPINS, TORONTO, and many more acts. Also joining us for these 10 dates is Scott Montgomery, aka. "Otter" who will be in charge of merchandising.
