Agalloch Announces New Album Details

Pacific Northwest dark metal act Agalloch has completed work on the band's fourth full-length album entitled "Marrow Of The Spirit," which is the follow-up to 2006’s "Ashes Against The Grain." Agalloch commented on the new album:

"Where the three predecessors to ‘Marrow Of The Spirit’ (namely ‘Pale Folklore’, ‘The Mantle’, and the aforementioned ‘Ashes Against The Grain’) all differ from each other, the same can be applied with the new album as ‘Marrow Of The Spirit’ is unlike anything Agalloch have ever produced before. This is also the first album to feature new Agalloch drummer Aesop Dekker (also in Profound Lore acts Ludicra and Worm Ouroboros) and features guest appearances by cellist Jackie Perez Gratz (Grayceon, Giant Squid, Asunder, Amber Asylum), Jeffrey Neblock (Vindensang), and Nathan Carson (Witch Mountain, Two-Ton Boa, SUNN 0))))."

To officially be released in North America on November 23rd through Profound Lore Records, the track listing for “Marrow Of The Spirit” is as follows:

1. They Escaped The Weight Of Darkness [3:41]
2. Into The Painted Grey [12:25]
3. The Watcher’s Monolith [11:46]
4. Black Lake Nidstang [17:34]
5. Ghosts Of The Midwinter Fires [9:40]

Agalloch Has Ritual Item Stolen During Show

Portland's Agalloch has issued the following statement about having a ritual item stolen during a show in Milwaukee:

"We had an excellent time in Milwaukee last night and the audience was wonderful. It was a great surprise. However, a very important canine skull was stolen from the stage during 'The Lodge' and we would like to get it back.

"It is a very sentimental piece and we would like to think that the person who grabbed it simply did not consider this. There were a lot of random horns and bones scattered across the front of the stage that perhaps didn't look important or replaceable. This skull is not replaceable!

"If whoever took it would bring it to the Chicago show tonight and would just put it on the stage, all will be forgiven and forgotten. We do not want our memories of these Midwest gigs to be tainted.

"Thank you."

Agalloch Post New Song Online

Pacific Northwest band AGALLOCH has issued the following update:

"We've recently posted a new song ('Sowilo Rune') from our upcoming EP, 'The White EP', to be released by Vendlus Records on February 29. As with all of our EPs and limited releases, this is not necessarily a sign of things to come. We envision small releases as opportunities to experiment and try new things without the weighty demands of a full-length release. So, expect a different sound, but also expect something that sits nicely with the rest of our work. You may pre-order 'The White EP' here.

"In the meantime, we are looking ahead at a fourth album and will post updates when necessary. Lastly, we've posted our cover of 'Kneel To The Cross' by one of our favorite groups, SOL INVICTUS. If you have yet to hear the original, we encourage you to seek out their album 'Death of the West'. However, most of us agree that SOL INVICTUS' best album remains 'The Blade'."

Agalloch Release Artwork and Tracklisting

Agalloch have released the tracklisting and artwork for their upcoming album, "Ashes Against the Grain". Track listing is as follows:

1. Limbs
2. Falling Snow
3. This White Mountain On Which You Will Die
4. Fire Above, Ice Below
5. Not Unlike The Waves
6. Our Fortress Is Burning... I
7. Our Fortress Is Burning... II - Bloodbirds
8. Our Fortress Is Burning... III - The Grain

Agalloch's guitarist/vocalist John Haughm said the following about the album: "The album sounds distinctively like Agalloch but heavier and with elements of pure black metal, folky Scandinavian prog, and a touch of post rock. I was heavily influenced by recordings like Thule's "Natt" album while writing "Limbs" and "Fire Above, Ice Below" and you can definitely hear that sort of brooding darkness in those songs. "Not Unlike The Waves" is easily the heaviest thing we've ever recorded; yet at its foundation it is a neo-folk song. There's also some up-tempo material like "Falling Snow" and moments of total ambience as well. This is definitely not an album that can be judged by one or two songs. Everything flows together as a dynamic whole and the red thread of the lyrics holds the album together."

"The lyrics this time unfold as an abstract and surreal folk tale. Although there is a framework of a concept, I wanted to create more of a dreamlike feeling with words than to merely "tell a story." My source of inspiration for the lyrics came from the surreal films of Alejandro Jodorowsky, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Sergei Parajanov as well as Northern Folklore and myths, Siberian Vodka, and the crumbling world around us all."

"Ashes Against the Grain" will be released in standared and digipak formats. The digipak format will contain different artwork. There is a plan for a vinyl edition to be released a couple months after the cd.
