Best Metal Newcomers Of 2013 Explored, Part 2
Each year in our annual metal awards we take a look at the best “newcomers” – those bands that released debut full-lengths worth your time.
To help get you acquainted with the best new talent releasing albums you may have missed, we’ll be looking at each of the bands nominated for the “best newcomer” category by our staff. Today, writer Rex_84 covers Vista Chino, The Resistance, Raven Lord, Skan, and Lord Dying. Here's what he had to say:
Thanks to Facebook and local venues, there was hardly a day that went by without receiving a flyer or like request on an unfamiliar band. Bands from around the globe injected new ideas into sounds we know well. In the end, however, my list mostly consists of new bands containing members from the artists I've gotten to know and love through my years as a heavy metal fan.
Vista Chino
Vista Chino rose from the ashes of Kyuss Lives when former Kyuss guitar Josh Homme and bassist Scott Reeder sued the band for "trademark infringement and consumer fraud." Although no longer containing the "Kyuss" in their name, Brant Bjork easily filled Josh Homme's shoes. Vista Chino's debut "Peace" is the fuzzy, desert rock album Kyuss fans have long for since the group disbanded nearly twenty years ago.
Raven Lord Recruits New Drummer
International metallers Raven Lord have announced the addition of current Power Quest drummer Rich Smith to the group’s ranks. Rich will finish the last shows for Power Quest's farewell tour by the end of May.
Commented Smith: "I’m delighted to of been offered the throne to drum for Raven Lord. I can’t wait to get in the rehearsal room with these guys and hit the road to play some kick ass shows I’d like to thank all the guys in the band and the management for this opportunity…"
Ex-drummer Larry Paterson states: "It is meant as no disrespect to any of you at all – and I wish great success for everybody. To cut a long story short, things are pretty tough right now as I have another band, a book and a documentary to make. All of this is running on a very tight schedule which WILL definitely get in the way of Raven Lord…”
Singer and bandleader Csaba Zvekan commented, “I’m saddened to see Larry go from Raven Lord but if dates are clashing there is not much any of us can do. The good thing is me and Larry Paterson will continue working on another band project called Exorcism which is expected to be released in 2014. Well, you know what they say; the show must go on! And with Summer shows in the pipeline we had to act fast and find another drummer as a permanent solution. Rich Smith is highly motivated to be the next Lord drummer and with Power Quest calling it the quits it was obvious that he was available for grabs. We took the opportunity and welcome Rich Smith to Raven Lord.” More...

Raven Lord Announces New Members
Multinational metal act Raven Lord announced the addition of keyboardist Pontus Larsson (Vindictiv/Firecracker) and drummer Henrik Hedman (Celestial Decay/Last Kingdom) to the band. The band is currently adding the finishing touches to the first album, which is expected soon.
The full line-up features:
Csaba Zvekan – Lead Vocals (Emergency/Killing Machine)
Stefan Lindholm – Lead Guitar (Vindictiv/Firecracker)
Jamie Mallender – Bass Guitar
Pontus Larsson – Keyboards (Vindictiv/Firecracker)
Henrik Hedman – Drums (Celestial Decay/Last Kingdom)
Bassist Jamie Mallender commented on the additions and impending debut album: "Make no mistake, we have made an album that’s gonna smack you in the face with both fists! This is the record that has been missing from the Metal scene for far too many years. But, despite the obvious anger and power of this music, there’s a lot of melody and harmony in there and we wanted to bring in a keyboard player that loved Metal, to compliment the melodic side, but not water things down or get too Wakeman on our asses. Meet Pontus Larsson, who has filled this role perfectly, he’s done exactly what we wanted him to and we are absolutely thrilled to have him onboard."
New keyboardist Pontus Larsson commented: "I was in the studio recording an album with Vindictiv when I was asked to join Raven Lord. I was kind of busy, but after I listened to the songs and checked out the band members it only took me 1 second to say yes! I’m proud to be a part of the band! It’s great to play with all these talented musicians. See ya out there! Rock on! The Lord of keys!" More...
