Flotsam and Jetsam is pleased to announce the first wave of confirmed club and festival dates for the band's upcoming 2015 European tour that’s scheduled to start in May and run through August.
This tour will mark the group's return to Europe, coming off 2013's "Ugly Noise" and last year’s re-recording of the 1988 classic “No Place For Disgrace."
Initially set to start in April, the tour was pushed out a month to May in order to allow Flotsam and Jetsam time to continue writing for a 2015 release that will feature new drummer Jason Bittner (Shadows Fall), who joined the band in late 2014.
Tracking on this untitled effort will begin in March 2015, with more European and U.S. tour dates to follow. More...
After parting ways with Kelly Smith last month, Flotsam and Jetsam today announces the recruitment of Jason Bittner (Shadows Fall).
"In my opinion, Jason in one of only a couple of men on my short list for the job," states Kelly.
"Jason's an amazing all-around drummer, a true professional, good friend, and solid stand-up guy. I was humbled to hear, after first meeting Jason in 1988 in Boston, that I had inspired him as a drummer."
Jason Bittner comments: "I have been a Flotsam and Jetsam fan for decades, following the band around the East Coast in the eighties and nineties. I've been lucky enough to be in the background of the Flotsam and Jetsam camp as a fan, supporter, and gear leader to my dear friend, Kelly David Smith.
"I am hard at work relearning all the classic Flotz material and can't wait to record and tour with the band in 2015. This will become my focus after the completion of the 2015 U.S. Shadows Fall hiatus tour, which will happen spring/summer 2015.
"As they say… 'Flotz 'till death!' See you in Europe, in April."
Stay tuned for details on an upcoming album and new tour dates from Flotsam and Jetsam.
Flotsam and Jetsam has issued the following announcement about parting ways with the band's drummer:
"Flotsam and Jetsam, regretfully announce that Kelly Smith will be stepping out from behind the drums to focus on caring for his family. Please, extend him you love and support during this time, as we wish nothing but the best for our Flotsam brother.
"Kelly was instrumental in bringing Flotsam back to its current form with a touring and festival schedule that, since 2013, saw the band perform live in 15 countries and across the U.S. for more than 80 shows.
"As Kelly departs, Flotsam continues work on a new album that is still scheduled for a spring 2015 release, to coincide with the band's upcoming European tour and festival dates.
Details on the upcoming album and new drummer will be released soon." More...

Following a recent European tour, Flotsam And Jetsam has checked in with the following announcement about lineup changes:
"We would like to send out a huge thank you to the many fans and press that came out to support us on our tour with Sepultura. This tour was the largest European tour to date for Flotsam and Jetsam.
"Our main goal is to get connected to all of you, shake your hands, look you in the eyes and let you know how much we appreciate you. You are the life blood of music.
"As you know we released a complete reproduction of No Place for Disgrace this year. This was so we could present the album the way it was intended to heard. Many of you had great comments about this and that confirmed our decision to get this done.
"After completion of the 2013 tour with Testament in the US, Edward Carlson was no longer able to tour due to physical issues that would require back and neck surgery to possibly correct. We will miss our comrade and wish him well on his next adventure. Steve Conley has been officially recruited to fill the spot. Having played with David Ellifson (Megadeth) in F5, we are confident in his ability to hold the spot with integrity. More...
Each week we check in with rock and metal bands from across the globe to get their favorite mosh pit memories, and this week's Pit Story comes courtesy of Riotgod vocalist Sunshine.
Check out Sunshine's tale below of experiencing a Flotsam and Jetsam show under the influence where the night's main entertainment came from an out of control skinhead:
This is kinda peripheral, but here we go: No matter what pit I have had the distinction of being in, whether while seeing the Cro-Mags or Agnostic Front at L'Amour back in the day or even in unexpected pits that break out at festivals during bands you would not think bring that out (see “Alice in Chains – Man in the Box”), I have had my share of adrenaline. Exciting but not dickish violent, that is not my scene.
As a musician – sometimes the pit breaks over onto the stage. One time a guy grabbed my mike and was sucked back in to the mosh, getting that back was a trip, kinda like fishing and rodeo at once. My audience based pit experience, it is something I deal with, as most do, to get close to the stage. Some guys are the kind who have to get in the middle of it, arms swinging, pushing and dealing.
A side note: I love it at a poorly attended local show, when ONE GUY is the pit. Anyway, I have always been a musician first and dealt with the pit. I am and have been always vigilant – helping people up – pit etiquette all that – see the Wikihow entry on moshing - can you believe that article, wow! And for this refer to #5: “...How brutal are the individuals bouncing around this particular pit? Are people just having fun, or are they going for blood? Know the difference between those who are ‘slam dancing’ and the idiot high school jock who's running around smashing people in the face with his knuckles...”
I always pride myself on being aware of what is going down, casing the situation for that one guy or group of dopes who surely will make
into l:-(ss than. And though having been in more than a few pits of various sizes, as time went on, I was relatively unscathed. But... I always had a feeling that one night who-knows-what would happen but “The Pit” the scene would somehow bite me. Like a snake handler, one day you WILL be bitten, no matter how careful you are.
It was the Flotsam and Jetsam / Leeway show back in the day, at the “new” Ritz in NYC, the old Studio 54. I found a blog that described the night, someone else's take on the night: “The bill that night was Mind Over Four, Repulsion (before they became known as Type O Negative), hometown heroes Prong and Leeway (who I immediately realized most of the NY hardcore and metal kids were there for), and headliners Flotsam & Jetsam. I was nonplussed by the insanity we faced, the sheer physicality of young men with something to prove.”More...

Flotsam and Jetsam, which was recently covered in our Sunday Old School column, has re-recorded the "No Place For Disgrace" album.
Pre-orders for the new version are available via Metal Blade at this location, and the album will see release on March 4th, 2014. Flotsam and Jetsam also comments:
"We have re-recorded 'No Place For Disgrace' because we have had a lot of requests to remix this record. The master tapes have been very difficult to obtain so we decided to re-record the album and use some of today's technologies to recreate it.
"The aim was not really to change but to enhance it with the opportunity with the use of new tools. We have the time available as well and it just seemed like a no brainer. A lot of the die hards are really nervous about it but I think after the final result they will embrace it. The sound quality is 100% better and more refined!" More...

In the United States, the main focus on thrash metal seems to be on the states of New York and California, though anyone who knows a bit about the genre will tell you that America produced some excellent thrash from all across the country. Take for example the state of Arizona, which gave birth to an act still going strong today, Flotsam and Jetsam. The seeds of the band were sewn in 1981 in Phoenix, Arizona, where drummer Kelly David-Smith formed the group with guitarists Pete Mello and Dave Goulder under the moniker, Paradox. They were soon joined by bassist and vocalist, Jason Newsted, who was in town with his band Gangster, who broke up in the city on their way to California from Michigan. After a few members came and went, along with the new name, Dredlox, Kelly reached out to an old schoolmate named Eric A. Knutson, who was attending the same summer school class and agreed to audition for the band. The group soon changed their name once more, this time to Dogz, before rechristening themselves yet again under the moniker, Flotsam and Jetsam.
They soon established themselves in the Arizona club scene and would frequently make the trip to California, leading them to support such acts as Megadeth, Mercyful Fate and Armored Saint amongst others. They recorded their first demos in 1985, "Iron Tears" and "Metal Shock," as well as a video for "Hammerhead," which they recorded in guitarist Ed Carlson’s living room. Their efforts impressed several record companies and before long they were signed to Metal Blade Records, who had previously signed Metallica and Slayer. They released their debut album, "Doomsday for the Deceiver" in 1987 to instant critical acclaim, becoming the first album in history to be rated 6/5 in Kerrang! magazine and is still regarded today as one of, if not their strongest work and one of the best debuts in the history of thrash metal. Flotsam and Jetsam has posted the following message online about canceling upcoming European tour dates:
"Jeff Keller Management LLC, the management company for Flotsam & Jetsam and Hirax, has announced that due to circumstances beyond the bands and management’s control, the 'Metal Apocalypse' European tour that was scheduled to feature both artists will now be cancelled."
Jeff Keller states: "Unfortunately, it was in both bands best interest to not continue with the tour at this time. We apologize to the fans for this unfortunate circumstance, and I can assure the fans that both bands will be in Europe in 2014 for other touring and festival appearances."
Flotsam and Jetsam has inked a new deal with Metal Blade Records for the album "Ugly Noise" to be released on April 16th, 2013. The label comments:
"Flotsam and Jetsam, arguably one of the most influential and prominent acts from thrash metal's birth in the early 80s, has returned to Metal Blade Records to release their new album, Ugly Noise. The lead single/title track is available for streaming now at this location.
"Ugly Noise is the band's eleventh full-length album, their first release on Metal Blade since 2001, and the follow up to their 2010 album, The Cold. The record also heralds the return of original members Michael Gilbert on guitar and Kelly David Smith on drums, who haven't recorded with Flotsam and Jetsam since High in 1997."
Flotsam and Jetsam's Kelly Smith comments on working with Metal Blade: "We have just inked a distribution deal for the release of 'Ugly Noise' through Metal Blade Records. Ugly Noise will be released worldwide in late March/Early April of 2013. It was the obvious choice for us after our long-standing relationship and Metal Blades 30 year history of metal. You can't match what they can do with 30 years of experience behind them. We are excited and looking forward to working with MB in 2013."
Also, tune into Liquid Metal on SiriusXM this week for a Flotsam and Jetsam interview & Liquid Metal Takeover. Kelly Smith, Eric AK and Michael Gilbert stop by the SiriusXM NYC studios to talk to Jose Mangin about the new album and current comeback tour with Testament. Tune in to listen: More...
