Crowbar Shares New Music Video

Next week, New Orleans, Louisiana sludge metal trailblazers Crowbar will drop their long-awaited new full-length, "Zero And Below" via MNRK Heavy. In advance of the record’s release, today the band unleashes a video for "Bleeding From Every Hole." You can check it out below.

Notes Windstein, "I really love this track. It’s kind of strange that it was written before the Covid epidemic because the song is basically what so many people went through in a metaphorical way during the shutdowns, loss of work, and social life. Things seemed so bad that no matter which way you turned it was the wrong direction. I wanted to express that there are people that feel that things are hopeless… but they do get better in the end. Your inner strength is there. It needs to be let out. I hope everyone enjoys the song. It is really one of my favorites." More...

Crowbar Reveals New Album Details

New Orleans, Louisiana sludge metal pioneers Crowbar will release their long awaited new full-length, Zero And Below,on 4th March via MNRK Heavy. In celebration, the band have unveiled the record’s artwork, tracklisting, and first single/video, "Chemical Godz," premiered via Revolver.

Watch the video to "Chemical Godz" below.

Crowbar songs are unapologetic emotional outpourings, with a bare-knuckle resolve alongside its soul-searching vulnerability, reliably delivered with crushing heaviness. Zero And Below, which cements the band’s dense catalogue exactly one dozen studio albums deep, is the most unforgivably doomy Crowbar record since their 1998 landmark effort, "Odd Fellows Rest."

Produced, mixed, and mastered by Duane Simoneaux at OCD Recording And Production in Metairie, Louisiana, Zero And Below is reverently old-school, counterbalanced by a resonant melodicism that’s stunningly mature. Songs like "Chemical Godz," "Bleeding From Every Hole," and "It’s Always Worth The Gain" demonstrate what Crowbar does better than any other band: powerful, evocative, and crushingly heavy music. Celebrating a recent 30th anniversary, Crowbar is led by one of the most beloved figures in heavy metal, riff overlord Kirk Windstein, whose menacing bellow and smooth drawl put resilient, unrepentant strength behind even the most sombre odes to suffering.

Comments Windstein of first single, "Chemical Godz," "We are all so excited to release the song and video for ‘Chemical Godz!’ It’s been nearly two years since the album was completed. It was such a sad time for so many people going through the Covid-19 epidemic and we felt it wasn’t a good time to release any new material. Get ready because the heavy is coming! We hope y’all enjoy the song and video. Stay safe out there!" More...

Emily Hingle Details New Book "Bandroom"

In February 2015 on a cold Carnival night, Emily Hingle got the idea to document the practice spaces of the bands and musicians of New Orleans. She had already visited some spaces where bands spend hours upon hours practicing and perfecting their craft, and she was inspired by the amount of hard work that goes into creating the music that is eventually performed on stage in front of dancing fans. These spaces and the massive effort that happens within them, she believed, deserved part of the glory garnered by the music itself.

"I feel like people love the aesthetic of music: going out to the show, grabbing drinks at the bar, dancing with your friends. That’s obviously an important aspect of music. But not as many people want to hear about how it gets made. I find the creation of it to be enthralling. Where it’s made, how long it takes, all of the emotion, arguments, and relationships that goes into it. Music isn’t made in a vacuum or out of nothing. It takes a lot of life."

Over the course of the next five years, Emily and her photographers visited nearly 50 distinct rehearsal spaces, jam rooms, studios, and homes to photograph the spaces and interview those who work there. In Band Room: New Orleans, the reader will be a visitor in 35 such spaces speaking with the likes of Tarriona Ball from Tank & The Bangas, Big Freedia, Sweet Crude, Kumasi, The Lost Bayou Ramblers, Robin Barnes & Pat Casey, Flowtribe, and many more.

Band Room: New Orleans is 296 pages of photography and text. It is self-published and available in hardcover and softcover versions. Emily Hingle is a Louisiana native; born in Lafayette, raised in Mandeville, and living currently in New Orleans. She has always had a passion for her state’s culture, especially music. She began interviewing bands while in college at the University of New Orleans for various websites, then she started writing for Where Y’at Magazine in 2010.
"I really want Band Room to be the beginning of something bigger. I feel like it is already. New Orleans, however, will always be the best because it’s home."

"Band Room: New Orleans" is currently available for purchase at Emily’s website https://culturecreep.net/, and it will be available in local retailers beginning in November just in time for gifting season.

Former Machine Head/Crowbar Drummer Passes Away

Tony Costanza, the drummer known for his time with Machine Head, Crowbar and Crisis, has sadly passed away at the age of fifty two. The news was broken by his former Crisis and Debris Inc. bandmate Afzaal Nasiruddeen, who posted the following statement on Facebook:

"It is with a heavy heart that I have to accept and inform everyone concerned that I lost my brother, bandmate, homeboy and family today.

"Tony Costanza was one of a kind. A man with a huge heart, love and loyalty for the ones close to him. I cannot relate to the reality of loss yet. I know he had a lot of admirers and I was one of the biggest. He would have literally taken a bullet for me. That's the kind of gangster brother he was.

"Tony died in his sleep this morning so I am sure he was at peace and in no pain. I wish his mother all the strength she can muster as she will need every ounce of it. I will be starting a GoFundMe page for her and Tony's funeral expenses. Please help if you knew him and care.

"Please hold your loved ones close as the sense of loss is insurmountable sometimes.

"Tony my friend. I will love you and cherish our memories together, forever. Hope you are in a better place now. Rest in peace."

Machine Head frontman Robb Flynn also paid tribute to the drummer: "Just got the news that our original drummer for Machine Head Tony Costanza passed away. Very sad to hear. Tony was involved in about half of the song on burn my eyes in someway or another, and we maintained our friendship throughout all these years. If anybody has any more information, please DM me" More...

Crowbar Comes Out On Top In London

It's always intriguing when bands from different genres or generally different styles come together. Cathedral on the Gods of Grind tour was an interesting experiment, as was Sick Of It All on the New Titans On The Block tour. On this night, I made my first visit to Camden's famous, Electric Ballroom to see a show headlined by Converge, where they were joined by special guests Crowbar, another pairing which might raise a few eyebrows.

First of all, credit must be given to The Electric Ballroom. Camden is known for being overpriced and something of a tourist trap, but this large and tidy venue which has hosted everyone from Sid Vicious (who recorded a live album here) to Paul McCartney is very reasonably priced indeed and all the staff from the bouncers to the bartenders to the cloakroom attendants were very friendly and helpful. I don't normally make notes like these about venues, but The Electric Ballroom was so impressive I felt I had to praise their work. More...
