The second coming of Megadeth's acclaimed traveling metal festival Gigantour arrives on both DVD and CD April 22 via Image Entertainment. Conceived in 2005 by Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine, Gigantour resurrects metal's focus on stellar musicianship.
The Gigantour DVD and CD follow Image Entertainment's fall 2006 release of the debut Gigantour CD and DVD, which featured performances by Megadeth, Dream Theater, Fear Factory, Anthrax (CD only), Nevermore, Life of Agony, Symphony X, Dry Kill Logic and Bobaflex.
Gigantour 2 features over an hour of performances by iconic and influential heavy metal pioneers Megadeth, along with Lamb of God, Opeth, Arch Enemy, Overkill, The Smashup, and Into Eternity. Recorded in DTS 5.1 surround sound, the DVD version also features a behind the scenes look at the 2006 tour, while both the DVD and CD offer a hidden bonus track--Megadeth's "Peace Sells."
The release of the Gigantour 2 DVD and CD coincides with this year's Earth Day--perfect, really, since MUSTAINE has said, with a laugh, about Gigantour's mission of emphasizing true musicianship and virtuosity: " I think that in a small way, we are cleaning up the environment of crappy bands."
Meanwhile, in February Megadeth heads to Europe--where recently announced new guitarist Chris Broderick (Nevermore, Jag Panzer) will make his debut with the band alongside Mustaine, drummer Shawn Drover, and bassist James Lomenzo, before returning for this year's Gigantour.
The 29-date North American trek kicks off April 12 at The Fillmore in Denver and criss-crosses the U.S. and Canada until its May 22 finale at the Mesa Amphitheatre in Phoenix . Joining Megadeth on this year's tour are Scandinavian death metal band In Flames, Finland's Children of Bodom, Arizona's modern extreme Job for a Cowboy, and Oakland, CA heavy power trio High on Fire.

In a posting on the official Bloodstock website, legendary thrashers Overkill have been confirmed to play the festival alongside other acts such as Opeth, Dimmu Borgir and more. The post on the site reads as follows:
"The Bloodstock team are pleased to announce that New York thrash veterans OVERKILL have been added to the bill for Bloodstock Open Air 2008."
The band recently released their latest album "Immortalis" to a strong critical acclaim.
TheMetalWeb.com has issued an interview with OVERKILL Frontman Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth. The following is an excerpt from the interview, conducted by Dawn:
Q: Let me start by saying, lately, Overkill’s name is all over the place and the band is doing some great things. Immortalis is doing extremely well press-wise; you did the Gigantour with MEGADETH, signed to Bodog, as well as supporting MOTÖRHEAD on a few dates. Why do you think it took the Gigantour to wake a few people up again to Overkill and open some doors, or as you put it in a previous interview, to “up” the value of the band, as opposed to prior years?
A: "It’s a reintroduction and I think that especially in a scene or I’m going to call it, the world market of music, you need to be reintroduced all the time. You’re only as good as your last day when you’re at the level were at. And what have you done for me lately or what have you’ve done with regard to the energy level, the song writing, etc... I think that always has to be proven over and over again. So, having something like a Motörhead tour through Europe or a Gigantour through the states, or having a label like Bodog which has a little bit more clout and a little bit more cash, makes that reintroduction possible. I think that if you take the band to a higher level, it always performs on whatever level “it’s” at. If the record label and the higher profile changes our level higher, we can always perform at that level. So, reintroductions are necessary sometimes. You don’t have to reintroduce METALLICA, but, you have to reintroduce Overkill sometimes." (Laughs)

In a 2006 interview, Mustaine stated that last year's Gigantour a celebration of headbanging rock at its best.
"It's all about musicianship and people who are positive," said Mustaine, who started the heavy metal package tour in 2005. "We want people out there who aren't afraid to do a guitar solo, and with the guys from LAMB OF GOD, OPETH, ARCH ENEMY and the other bands, we have a great new generation of guitar players out there."
The inaugural Gigantour, which also featured DREAM THEATER and FEAR FACTORY, spawned CD and DVD releases.

THE CURSED/ex-HADES guitarist Dan Lorenzo has issued the following update:
"This Saturday night [November 24] I'm on at 10:00 p.m. on 'The Metal Collection' with Rockin' Ron on Arrow 95.9 FM in Panama City, Florida, then at 11:00 p.m. EST you can hear me on 'The Classic Metal Show'. You can hear that at www.cmsradionetwork.com. I'm not sure what Rockin' Ron wants to talk about, but I have a pretty good idea why I was asked to come on 'The Classic Metal Show' this Saturday! You can also hear my songs '1974', 'PHD. in Cleveland', 'Too Fast For Hate' and 'Keep It Together' in the new adult movie 'Punk'd Your Ass' by Matt Zane out now. The visuals are better than my music!"
Dan Lorenzo recently issued a statement in response to SEVEN WITCHES mainman Jack Frost, who slammed Lorenzo for allegedly "talking a lot of shit" about him and "putting a lot of shit on the Internet" about him "for no reason whatsoever."
An e-card for the debut album from THE CURSED — the new band featuring vocalist Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth (OVERKILL) and former HADES guitarist Dan Lorenzo — is available at this location. Entitled "Room Full of Sinners", the CD was released on June 26 via Screaming Ferret Wreckords. The album was completed at Crystal Studios in New Jersey, before and after OVERKILL's successful stint on the Gigantour, which also featured MEGADETH and LAMB OF GOD. Mike Koenig from Crystal Studios engineered.
THE CURSED made its live debut on May 20 at the Highline Ballroom in New York City. Also appearing on the bill were former ANTHRAX singer Joey Belladonna and THE SCHOOL OF ROCK ALL-STARS (playing a set of metal classics by METALLICA, IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, KING DIAMOND and SLAYER).
Frontiers Records will release the debut album from Markus Grosskopf's (HELLOWEEN) BASSINVADERS, entitled "Hellbassbeaters", on January 25, 2008.
BASSINVADERS was a creation of Markus' while sitting in a bar and enjoying a few drinks. It was there that he got inspired to produce a heavy rock record without any guitars at all. He presented this concept in early 2007 to Frontiers Records, which was intrigued by the idea and gave it a go.
According to a press release, "Hellbassbeaters" contains all the basic elements of a heavy rock record "and so much more. You got the strong vocals, rhythmic bass, intoxicating drums and even bass and twin bass solo parts. What you hear is what you get: 100% genuine heavy rock record with absolutely no discordant guitar note on it at all." To guarantee a great variety of different influences, Markus invited some well-known singing bass players from the German metal scene to join the band, including DESTRUCTION's Schmier, SODOM's frontman Tom Angelripper and RAGE's Peavy. He also managed to get a few of his bass heroes to lay down solos on some of the tracks, including Billy Sheehan, Rudy Sarzo and DD Verni.
Guest musicians include:
Billy Sheehan (STEVE VAI, MR. BIG, DAVID LEE ROTH)
Rudy Sarzo (DIO, OZZY OSBOURNE, WHITESNAKE, QUIET RIOT)

Veteran heavy metal musician Joe Comeau (ANNIHILATOR, OVERKILL, LIEGE LORD, RAMROD, TAD MOROSE) has won the "Ask Donald Trump" contest on The Trump Blog where he got an opportunity to ask the billionaire real estate developer Donald Trump a question and have it personally answered.
According to The Trump Blog, Joe Comeau lists his previous occupations as "Banker, limo/taxi driver, travel agent, food services worker, construction, retail sales, online sales . . . should I continue?"
Currently, Joe is an international recording artist who has recorded eight studio albums, played on various other recordings and has toured extensively throughout the world. His main genre is heavy metal.
"It is in my blood and it fuels that which I do," Joe says, "always has and always will!"
But music is not the only thing that motivates him. He has always been interested and excited about investing, finance and the real estate markets. He has been studying investing for a few years now and is definitely "amped up to be studying at Trump University!"
"It just goes to show that you should never judge a book by its cover," Joe says. "Keep your mind open. Think about this . . . the next time you are in line at the store, the heavy metal musician standing next to you might just end up being your next business partner!"
Comeau is currently working on material for the next album from the Swedish metal band TAD MOROSE, whom he joined in March 2006. He is also "finishing up post-mixing and editing a new EMERSON, LAKE AND PALMER live CD release from New York in 1978," which is due out for Christmas.
The makers of Get Thrashed: The Story of Thrash Metal have issued the following brief message:
"For all those who have been asking - Get Thrashed: The Story Of Thrash Metal should be out on DVD April, 2008. More details coming soon!!!"
Get Thrashed documents the history of thrash metal by dissecting the genre from its head banging beginnings to the present day resurgence. The film features some incredible vintage live footage as well as interviews from legendary acts such as EXODUS, SODOM, ANTHRAX, METALLICA and more!

Metal-Experience.com recently conducted an interview with OVERKILL bassist D.D. Verni. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:
Metal-Experience.com: After all these records is it hard to write something original or would you say with all the experience you have it comes naturally now?
Verni: Well, it's still hard because we have this huge back catalogue and we want to stay true to the kind of music we make. We're not going to start making reggae songs or whatever so it's hard to think of new ways to do stuff. But the writing process itself I'd say is easier because I own a recording studio now. This makes life easier as there's no time pressure and you have access to everything you need. We can experiment a little bit more so that part is easier but thinking up new things is definitely challenging. It is more relaxed when you have your own studio because there is less tension and you think you have all the time in the world but at the end there's always someone like a record company knocking at your door saying, "We've got to have that record now!" The good thing is when you have your own place you don't have to work so many days in a row. You can just take the weekend off and hang out and come back. I think if we were younger that would probably be a bad thing because we would just spend these days partying but now we would spend these days resting.
Metal-Experience.com: What's the reason why you guys have lasted so long?
Verni: I think the reason why we've been around for all these years is because Bobby and I have a pretty good work ethic. I know some bands haven't released a record for three years and then they're like, "Oh my god we need to come up with something!" but we're used to working, we think of the band as our job. Some guys are electricians and we're in a band. We treat it like it's our business, we love it but that's how we look at it.
Metal-Experience.com: Is there a special ingredient for an OVERKILL song?
Verni: Yeah, energy mostly. I like many different kinds of songs and I also like slower songs, so sometimes I'll experiment with that with overkill. I don't know if the kids love them as much as I do, they seem to like the more energetic ones. We try to create a balance. We want in your face tracks, more grooving songs and something you can sing along to. For some bands it's a shame that they can't have fun on stage, its all business for them. We get to have fun, we figure you should all just grab a beer, grab your partner and sing along!
Metal-Experience.com: How did you end up signing with Bodog?
Verni: We were actually going to sign with someone else first. Johnny Z and his wife discovered METALLICA, ANTHRAX, TESTAMENT and us, all those thrash bands from the '80s. They retired but they got a little bit itchy and they wanted to get back into it. Bodog is a huge company and they wanted to do a metal and rock division of what they are doing, they wanted someone who knew this kind of music to do this for them so they talked to Johnny and Marsha. Their first thought was to work with the bands that they knew and that they had worked with. So they came to one of our shows in Manhattan and they hadn't seen us for a lot of years and they were blown away! They were like, "What, is it 1990 all over in here again?!" So they said why don't we do something together and we started talking about different ideas. We were just comfortable with that seeing as we had known them for many years, like family. Negotiations went on for a long time so that's why it took longer and longer to get the record out but we're excited now we committed to a period of about five years and two or three records. It's nice that they're so excited. They only called us about two weeks ago to see if we wanted to do this show for the fans and do some press. Just a fun thing, so that's why we were on the small stage. It was insane how many people were there, there was room for about 10.000 and there was almost 30.000 there. The other bands were already booked here so it wouldn't have been fair to bump them off the main stage.
Metal-Experience.com: Can you tell us something about the lyrics on "Immortalis"?
Verni: I never understand what Bobby's writing about! I read them and sometimes he tells me and sometimes he's not even sure himself. Sometimes he'll just write about a feeling, it may mean one thing to him but to someone else it can feel totally different. It's never what I thought it was. I'm not all that concerned with lyrics, if they are interesting and/or fun to sing along to, that's OK.
Metal-Experience.com: How important is it that people actually pay attention to the lyrics then?
Verni: Well, it is important in a way, the worst thing would be to have like a MANOWAR album, that's kind of silly to me.. Don't get me wrong I love MANOWAR, they are fun and everything but the lyric thing is kind of silly. You want them to be interesting, they have to make the song better.
Metal-Experience.com: Have you had any feedback on "Immortalis" yet?
Verni: Blitz and I are overwhelmed, the press really liked it. Thrash and speed metal seems to be having a bit of a resurgence over here and because the album is a bit more thrashy we got some great reviews here. Germany has been so good to us, for two decades now we've been coming here to do shows. Sometimes it's frustrating because they never want us to change but they've stuck with us through everything and they know that in our core this is what we do. German people more than any territory in the world like that and respect that.
Metal-Experience.com: Can you explain the implications of the title "Immortalis"?
Verni: We couldn't find a title for this album and it was getting later and later. We were talking to Johnny z and we were telling him that we were looking for a Latin word or phrase and the next day he said, "What about 'Immortalis'?'" 'cause it means "immortal" in Latin and it kind of applies to you guys.." In an interview it was once said that OVERKILL are the cockroaches of metal, you can stamp on them but you can't kill them. And it was also the last day, we really needed a title! So when it came we all said, let's do it. No title track on this album, but you know, we did "Overkill" and then we did "Overkill II" and then "Overkill III" and then we kind of stopped. But on this album there's another "Overkill". We just kind of picked up where the other one left off, I don't really know why, it just kind of happened. But for people who are fans of the first three albums it's good. When we were recording the song we said to each other, "Hey this sounds kind of like the other ones!" and then Blitz started doing the lyrics for it and it was a fun thing because it just took us right back. A lot of times there's retrospective things that come out but me and Blitz are also really interested in what is happening today.
Metal-Experience.com: How do you feel about illegal downloading of music?
Verni: I don't know exactly, I guess it's all kind of unfortunate. It affects the fans, and they'll get the music any way they can but if you sell less units then the label will be unhappy and they give you less money to make the record. So then the record is less good and the fans will be unhappy so it kind of all works together. In the future I think things will change even more when it comes to the way we buy music, it seems it will change into something even I can't think of where maybe we won't be able to buy records anymore and it'll all be downloads. Or maybe bands won't even release whole records anymore and just do three songs at a time instead so they can control things more. It's not so much about the fans as it is about the labels, they just want to make more profit. It's trickling away little by little. Recently a major newspaper in the UK put copies of records in one of their issues and the labels went nuts. If it was up to me the fans could just have the music as long as they come to the shows but it doesn't work that way.
