70,000 Tons Of Metal: Day One

It seemed like one year had passed in a blink of an eye. No sooner had I experienced my first 70,000 Tons of Metal, which included a birthday that saw Helloween, Rage (w/Lingua Mortis Orchestra) and Metal Church play, than I was plotting my next adventure on the high seas. The floating festival is not only the most unique and phenomenal metal sojourns in the world, its boasts a diverse genre spanning 40+ bands. Though the 2013 installment represented an array of bands more geared towards my personal favorite tastes, a “Barge to Hell” like fog is built up around this year with Carcass, Obituary, Massacre, Death: DTA Tours, Satyricon, Terrorizer among a few which has swung the pendulum towards a harsher environment. For the traditional and power styles there is return act and “athletic rock” legends Raven, German euro power and proclaimed “happy metal” act Freedom Call, German symphonic metallers Xandria, Israeli symphonic ambassadors of peace Orphaned Land and the 700 piece traveling city Haggard, which single handedly make this 71,000 Tons of Metal. Best Metal Newcomers Of 2013 Explored: Part 3

For our 2013 year-end awards we included a category for best “newcomers” – those bands that released debut albums worth hearing.

To help get you acquainted with the best new talent releasing albums you may have missed, we’ll be looking at each of the bands nominated for the “best newcomer” category by our staff. Today, writer/reviewer CROMCarl covers Avatarium, Bane of Winterstorm, Artlantica, Heavatar, and the previously mentioned Gloryhammer. Here's what he had to say:

Avatarium

Just when you thought Leif Edling was done making Candlemass albums - relegating the epic doom pioneers to live duty only - the man goes and reinvents the genre again with the creation of Avatarium. Backed by powerhouse guitarist Marcus Jidell (Evergrey), drummer Lars Skold (Tiamat), and keyboarist Carl Westholm (Krux/ex-Candlemass), the band was bursting with talent and vast doom pedigrees.

All initial trepidation of how vocalist Jennie-Ann Smith would fare was cast aside on the album's first spin. Her haunting and gorgeous vocals showed as much immense power as it did frail honesty. The band laid waste to all doom that came before them with one of the best debut albums since Candlemass' "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus." The band was not only my top newcomer of the year, but came in second in my overall Top Albums of 2013 (see the review here).

Best Metal Newcomers Of 2013 Explored, Part 1

Each year in our annual metal awards we take a look at the best “newcomers” – those bands that released debut full-lengths worth your time.

In addition to the standard slew of burgeoning metal bands getting their footing in 2013, there were several new projects created by established members of the scene that dropped some of the best albums of the year.

To help get you acquainted with the best new talent releasing albums you may have missed, we’ll be looking at each of the bands nominated for the “best newcomer” category by our staff. Today content manager xFiruath covers Witherscape (which ended up winning the category in our 2013 awards), Gloryhammer, and Cnoc an Tursa.

Witherscape

An instance of the champ coming out of retirement to show the young pups how things are done, Witherscape marks the return of European metal legend Dan Swano, who has spent the last several years behind the sound board instead of in front of the microphone.

Rather than going in the direction of his various ‘90s projects, this band is essentially a progressive death metal outing, with some strong classic metal leanings. “The Inheritance” was an album I greatly enjoyed on first listen, and have only come to appreciate even more over time, to the point it’s now among my most played metal on any given week.

To find out more about Witherscape, you can read our interview with Dan Swano, or check out my original review of the album right here.

Christopher Bowes Releases Christmas Album

In celebration of the holidays and apparently because baby Jesus may have also been a pirate, Christopher Bowes of Alestorm and Gloryhammer has released his own Christmas album "Christmas at the Organ."

Check out the ridiculous video for "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" below (how often does that hymn feature the word "fuck" in it?).

Kambrium Premieres New Track "Dark Lights"

German symphonic power death metallers Kambrium are on the cusp of releasing the sophomore full length album "Dark Reveries," which drops on October 18th via 7Hard Records. Few younger bands impress more than this exciting band, defying genre boundaries by combining extreme elements with power and symphonic metal. The result is blinding brutality enveloped inside a symphonic wall of melody performed with the precision on par with metal’s most veteran acts.

"Dark Reveries" tells the tale of a man who wakes up into his own nightmares and is unable to escape. It features guest vocal appearances from Amanda Somerville (Trillium/Avantasia), Thomas Winkler (Gloryhammer/Ex-Emerald) and newcomer Melanie Mau. The album was produced and mixed by Flaming Row's Martin Schnella, who also provided background vocals and guitar work. For a review of "Dark Reveries," head on over to this location.

Metal Underground.com is proud to provide the exclusive premiere of the new track "Dark Lights," which features a guest vocal appearance from Gloryhammer vocalist Thomas Winkler (Ex-Emerald) (for a review of Gloryhammer's debut LP "Tales From the Kingdom of Fife," head over here).

Keyboardist/composer Jan Hein describes story behind the lyrics: "Dark Lights is about the person who wakes up in his own nightmare. Everything seems so unreal and he can't run away from the shadows who are hunting him." As for his choice of Thomas Winkler Hein added: "I wanted a strong characterful voice for that song. I discovered the band Gloryhammer and was blown away from Thomas' voice. I asked him to sing the song for us. We are overwhelmed by the result! Hope you guys like it too!"
