Ozzfest.com, has added two "mystery act" slots to their "Bands" page — one on the main stage and one on the second stage. The main-stage slot is widely expected to be filled by VELVET REVOLVER (who will reportedly join the tour on August 16 in West Valley City, UT before taking over IRON MAIDEN's slot beginning on August 23 in Albuquerque, NM), while there is no word yet on who will fill the second-stage "mystery" slot.
Launch Radio Networks is reporting that VELVET REVOLVER has firmed up plans to be part of this year's Ozzfest tour. Drummer Matt Sorum said the group will play 10 Ozzfest dates, commencing on August 16 in West Valley City, Utah. The last seven dates will be in lieu of IRON MAIDEN, which drops off the bill on August 20. Sorum said his band is looking forward to the tour. "They've asked us to be the second on the slot, so I mean, we're going on right before [BLACK] SABBATH," he said. "That's gonna be pretty cool. And then there's a lot of really heavy bands on the bill. They're counting on us to bring out a lot of fans. I mean, I think that they think it's gonna be cool to have us on the bill, and that's why they invited us."
Ozzfest wraps up on September 4 in West Palm Beach, Florida. VELVET REVOLVER recently started a North American arena tour that lasts until May 25. The group will head to Europe in June and early July.
VELVET REVOLVER resumes its current tour on April 12 in Chula Vista, California.

According to a post at Ozzfest.com, VELVET REVOLVER will perform at the August 27 Woodlands, TX stop of this year's Ozzfest, leading to speculation that VELVET REVOLVER will take over IRON MAIDEN's slot at the festival once co-headliners MAIDEN depart the tour. The posting also lists MUDVAYNE as being on the tour, although the Illinois quartet have not yet been officially added to the trek.
As previously reported, IRON MAIDEN will not be performing on the final seven dates of this year's Ozzfest due to prior touring commitments overseas. A replacement act has not yet been officially announced.
Reading and Leeds Festivals headliners Iron Maiden have announced they are playing classic set at this year’s bash.
Singer Bruce Dickinson declared The Carling Weekend “just genius” before announcing his band’s plans.
“We’re going to be doing a set from just our first four albums, so they’ll be songs we haven’t played in 15 or 20 years,” he explained. “Many of our young fans won’t have heard this songs been played live - it’s great.”
Dickinson added that having not played the Reading site in 23 years, he was keen to get back there.
“It’s brilliant to be back at Reading, it’s flat and it’s the best festival site in the UK,” he said. “It was where I got into festivals going as a punter and it’s also where I got into Iron Maiden. I was there with my band Samson when they asked me join Iron Maiden. I asked the late, great Tommy Vance what I should do and he said ‘Don’t Take it’. It’s the one time I ignored him.”
The Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds takes place between August 26 and 28 and features the Pixies and Foo Fighters along with Iron Maiden as headliners.
On Bruce Dickinson's BBC6 Rock Show, the Iron Maiden frontman stated that the band would (only) play an one hour set on Ozzfest.
As previously reported, the 10th anniversary of Ozzfest features Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall and Black Label Society on the Main Stage. The Hot Topic Second Stage will be headlined by Rob Zombie and will also feature As I Lay Dying, Mastodon, The Haunted, In Flames, Arch Enemy, The Black Dahlia Murder, Bury Your Dead, Soilwork, Trivium, It Dies Today, A Dozen Furies and more.

Sanctuary Records have issued this press release regarding Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson's forthcoming new solo album, "Tyranny Of Souls", scheduled for release on May 24:
Bruce Dickinson is an artist who has influenced thousands of singers, musicians and fans alike in his outstanding role as the front man of legendary band Iron Maiden. He has achieved great success as a solo artist, and is also acclaimed as a Radio DJ, TV presenter, pilot, author and voice of modern music.
It has been seven years since Dickinson released his last solo album, "The Chemical Wedding," which received massive critical acclaim while exploring intriguing and dark themes. The intervening years have seen him make a highly successful return to Iron Maiden, with two huge albums and record breaking live shows and tours.
"Tyranny Of Souls," Bruce's new solo venture, sees him return once again to collaborate with guitarist/producer/writer Roy Z. The album's cover is adorned with a 15th century depiction of Hell by Hans Hemling and the music continues along this path to explore dark, apocalyptic themes. Delving into science, theology and of course, his love of flight, with thought provoking, intelligent and menacing lyrics that are sure to leave the listener's mind unsettled, "Tyranny Of Souls" is pure Dickinson. Heavy riff-laden songs and explosive virtuoso guitar work from Roy joined with the definitive Dickinson soaring vocals, makes this ground breaking album a tour de force of modern Metal. It was following on from the end of the last Maiden tour that Bruce saw an opportunity to work alongside Roy again.
Dickinson says, "With Maiden, once the band has finished up on the tours, we all tend to go our separate ways and do our own thing for a while until it's time to saddle up again for the next album. I knew I could seize the chance to work with Roy in between his work on the new Judas Priest album. We both work quickly together which I like and the recording is very organic so it came together quite easily. I'm very proud of it."
"Tyranny Of Souls" track listing:
01. Mars Within (Intro)
03. Soul Intruders
04. Kill Devil Hill
05. Navigate The Seas Of The Sun
06. River Of No Return
07. Power Of the Sun
08. Devil On A Hog
10. A Tyranny Of Souls
IRON MAIDEN's "Eddie Rips Up… Europe/North America - Summer 2005 Tour" has already had tremendous on-sale reactions in Europe, with tickets for their massive show in Gothenburg's Ullevi Stadim on July 9 recently selling out all 53,500 in just 2½ hours — the second fastest sell-out ever in Sweden’s biggest venue after BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN! Tickets for their show at Helsinki's Hartwell Arena on July 6 and 7 went the same way with 22,000 tickets selling out in a day.
Comments singer Bruce Dickinson, "We've always had great support there before but this is stepping up another level entirely. This whole tour will be one of the biggest we have ever done in terms in the number of fans we are playing to and if the reaction continues like this, every show will be a truly momentous occasion.
"Following the great reception received by our DVD 'The Early Days', which chronicled the MAIDEN story over the first four albums, we decided to give the fans a special treat on this tour by playing materiel almost exclusively from these albums, including a lot of songs that fans have been asking us to play for years along with fan favourites like 'Number of the Beast', 'Run to the Hills', 'Hallowed be thy Name', 'Wrathchild' and 'The Trooper'. And it will be a lot of fun for us playing stuff we haven't played for years!!
"In keeping with this, we will be bringing over for Ozzfest the full European show, naturally including as special guest Eddie in various appropriate guises!! The stage sets, production and backdrops will recreate aspects of the shows on the tours around those albums — 'Iron Maiden', 'Killers', 'Number of the Beast' and 'Piece of Mind'. Only bigger, much bigger!!! We don't know if anyone has done anything like this before but we think it's something the fans will really appreciate both in the choice of songs and in the production values.
"Unfortunately, we are unable to complete the full Ozzfest schedule as we were already confirmed to headline some major British festivals in that period, so apologies to fans in Texas and the Southeast. Having said that we are very much looking forward to the dates we are doing, especially with such a great bill. We're sure it will be a fantastic day out for the fans."
Original JUDAS PRIEST singer Al Atkins has completed work on his fifth solo album, entitled "Demon Deceiver".
The CD, which features artwork by MAGNUM bassist Al Barrow (who also runs Generic Designs), was pieced together over the last ten months with the help of South African guitarist Mike de Jager, Simon Lees (BUDGIE; once voted guitarist of the year by Guitar magazine), Brian Tatler (DIAMOND HEAD), bassist Pete Emms (THE VASELINE RATS), and drummers Adrian Badland and Mick Hales. Among the songs scheduled to appear on the album is "Drown", which is said to be a duet between Al and the Kansas-based vocalist/guitarist Johnny Lokke.
Atkins' band THE DENIAL, also featuring ex-IRON MAIDEN/PRAYING MANTIS guitarist Dennis Stratton, is currently on a break while the members pursue other projects. Al is also said to be finishing off his book he is writing about the early years of JUDAS PRIEST, entitled "Dawn of the Metal Gods".
