Linkin Park logo

Formed: 1996
From: Los Angeles, CA, United States
Last Known Status: Active

Blending hardcore rock, hip-hop, and electronic music, Linkin Park has established a sound that is difficult to classify, but easy to identify. The LA-based band combines provoking rhymes and melodic vocals with neck-snapping beats, vicious guitar riffs, and dizzying scratches.

Formerly named Hybrid Theory, the band describes their music as "a constantly evolving experiment." "Our goal is to bring seemingly distant elements together," says emcee Mike Shinoda, describing Linkin Park's sound and its fan base.

Since its inception in 1996, the band has attracted a diverse and dedicated following. Its grassroots fan base has grown rapidly, fueled by the efforts of hundreds of street teamers across the country, hardcore listeners committed to building Linkin Park. Friends since school, Linkin Park is Rob Bourdon (drums), Brad Delson (guitar), Joe Hahn (turntables), Mike Shinoda (vocals), Chester Bennington (vocals), and Phoenix (bass).

Linkin Park Front Man Reportedly Commits Suicide

Update: the singer's death has now been confirmed with the L.A. County coroner by AP News.

TMZ is reporting that Chester Bennington of Linkin Park has passed away from an apparent suicide at the age of 41.

The celebrity gossip site issued this update:

"Law enforcement sources tell us the singer hanged himself at a private residence in Palos Verdes Estates in L.A. County. His body was discovered Thursday just before 9 AM.

"Chester was married with 6 children from 2 wives. The singer struggled with drugs and alcohol for years. He had said in the past he had considered committing suicide because he had been abused as a child by an older male."

This news follows in the wake of Chris Cornell from Soundgarden's suicide back in May, who was a close friend of Bennington.

Linkin Park's latest album "One More Light," which took a major turn away from the group's nu-metal beginnings, was released earlier this year and the band was scheduled to kick off a tour at the end of the month. More...

From Inside Covers Linkin Park's "Heavy"

A few weeks back Linkin Park released the very poorly named "Heavy," which was about as far from its namesake as a song can get. U.K. alternative metal outfit From Inside has now released a cover version that gets the track more towards what its name would imply.

The band says, “Linkin Park is without the doubt the band that defines our childhood. When we first heard their new song, 'Heavy,' we really wanted to relate to it, but without those killer distorted guitars, Mr. Hahn’s scratching, or Mike Shinoda’s rapping, it just wasn’t the Linkin Park that has inspired us so much in our lives.

"We felt compelled to write a tribute to the band that has released those lives changing album - 'Hybrid Theory' and 'Meteora,' So we all agreed to take it upon ourselves to head straight into the studio and put our own spin on how we feel 'Heavy' could have sounded if they had approached it in the same vein as their earlier album. We simply wanted to put the heavy side back into the Linkin Park sound.” More...

A Decade Of Metal In Review

On the 31 Dec 1999, no planes came crashing out of the sky, nuclear bombs went off or microwave ovens tried to eat anyone. However, times were about to change and in the metal scene change was already well underway. Let us take a stroll through the decade in metal that was.

Many of the 90s big names like Emperor and Pantera prepared to give their last venomous scream dying off in the wake of ever diminishing interest in the metal scene that had plagued the 90s. In the year 2000 a band named “Limp Bizkit” came out with an album called "Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavoured Water" and in a storm nu-metal took over the public perception of heavy music, changing the face of metal irreparably. Although nu-metal had already been pioneered by Korn, bands like Deftones, Disturbed, Mudvayne and Linkin Park all had breakout releases in 2000. More...
