Shred guitarist Nita Strauss joined up with Alice Cooper earlier this summer and immediately went on a massive tour across North America with Motley Crue, which will continue through the Fall.
Strauss takes the place of Orianthi, who has toured with Alice for the past few years. She was also recently ranked #1 on Guitar World's list of "10 Female Guitar Players You Should Know." Strauss now checks in with the following report:
"The past two months on the Motley Crue Final tour have been unreal! Every time the curtain drops to start our set and I feel the crowd roar wash over me it's amazing to look to my right and see the legendary Alice Cooper. We have made so many great memories on this tour playing to sold out amphitheaters and arenas all over North America and meeting tons of new fans. Hard to believe we only have a week left of the first leg of this tour. Motley has been a blast to tour with. The band and crew have been so great to us and they put on a hell of a show every single night.
"I'm really excited about partnering up with All Axess for the launch of my website. Not only is that going to be the place to get any and all news about what I'm up to, it also has tons of exclusive photos, videos and merchandise that you can only get there. Look for a slew of new instructional video lessons and photos over the next few months as I will constantly be keeping the site updated. Thanks for the support and hopefully see you all soon." Author Ian Carroll has launched a crowd funding campaign to release a book about the many bands he has interviewed at the Download festival.
Full details on the campaign and perks for contributing can be found at Kickstarter here. Carroll comments:
"In 2005 I started to write the book of the Donington & Download Festival (including Monsters Of Rock at Milton Keynes).
"I was coming to the end of completing the Official Book of the Reading Festival and saw Donington as the second release in my 'Festival Series' of books, covering my favourite festivals that I attend every year - Donington/Download Festival is the longest running rock festival in the UK, covering all genres from rock to classic rock, Emo to Screamo, Punk to Hardcore, Black Metal to Death Metal and every style in between, plus in the last 5 years the addition of drum & bass and dance - the festival that caters for all.
"I have traveled the length and breadth of England interviewing bands and artists for the book and have had some great times in amongst the hard work. I've also had many phone interviews from Metallica to Testament, Lordi to Staind, Alice Cooper to Queensrÿche and also what was possibly one of the legend Ronnie James Dio's last interviews, prior to cancelling his final UK tour." This year's edition of the U.K. Bloodstock Open Air Festival is set to take place from August 9th - 12th, with full details available at the festival's website here. The organizers of BOA 2012 have now posted a teaser trailer for the event, which can be viewed below.
It was six years ago when I last saw the mighty Iron Maiden. This time was different, as the band embarked on the “Maiden England” Tour, closely matching the set list that was played during the “Seventh Son of a Seventh Son” tour, which I remembered so well. The site was at the Comcast Center, an outdoor venue in Mansfield, Massachusetts (called Boston by the band). It was a perfect night, cool - threatening weather (that never came) - and a crowd of 14,000 people to celebrate a moment in time that for some of us was the rare opportunity to recapture memories from 1989-1990 that were frozen in our minds. The bonus of Alice Cooper as an opener made this a very special night indeed.
Iron Maiden shows are a pilgrimage for seasoned metalheads. It is rare to find a Maiden virgin, but I found myself in between two, my wife to my right and a 50 plus year old gentleman who found it important to grace me with his “knowledge” of music and the fact that Iron Maiden “cut the set of Alice Cooper short because they knew they couldn’t follow him.” I nicely reminded the man that 14,000 people showed up to see Iron Maiden, despite the fact that I myself am a huge fan of the Coop. We then engaged in an almost one sided “discussion” (mostly dominated by his apparent low self esteem and/or lack of companion) about how great music was in the 60's and ‘70's and how the 80's sucked (until, as he put it, he “started to appreciate it lately”). Though I was born in 1971, I expressed that I related (somewhat), but my love was the 80's and felt (at the time) that the 90's was a weak decade for metal. The engaged discussion was filled with mind-boggling ignorance which detracted from the importance of the moment for my wife to whom I periodically turned to mouth the words “Save me.” More...
The Bloodstock 2012 organizers have issued the following announcement about confirming more bands to appear at this year's festival:
"After last week’s headliner announcement - where we revealed the mighty Machine Head will be letting fans pick the songs at their first ever UK festival headline slot - Bloodstock and Machine Head are now ready to take requests.
"If you head to Facebook you can now submit your suggestions via a poll. Each fan can pick five songs from Machine Head’s incredible debut 'Burn My Eyes,' and the five most popular tracks will be performed at Catton Hall this summer.
"Bloodstock can also reveal a further three acts for the Sophie Stage and one for the Ronnie James Dio Stage. Headlining the Sophie Stage on Thursday night, raucous rockers Viking Skull bring their loud and proud metal to Bloodstock, alongside Belfast metalheads Sweet Savage. Hotly tipped newcomers Death Valley Knights show why in just a few short months their powerful metal has earned them a much coverted spot at Britain’s most metal festival, and finally Canada’s Kobra & The Lotus make their Bloodstock debut opening the Ronnie James Dio Stage on Sunday." The 2012 edition of the Bloodstock Open Air festival will take place this coming August 9th - 12th, and the organizers of the festival have now issued the following statement about confirming Machine Head:
"It is with tremendous excitement that we can now reveal our final headliner to be Oakland metal titans Machine Head, who will make their first ever UK festival headlining appearance on Saturday, August 11th on the RONNIE JAMES DIO main stage.
"Machine Head first graced UK shores in the wake of their landmark debut album 'Burn My Eyes' in 1994 as main support to Slayer. Fan reaction to Machine Head’s signature brand of crushing metal was so intense that the band would return immediately afterward to headline their own sold-out shows at many of the same venues, launching a massive swell of passionate fan support that continues to this day.
"Seven albums, a Grammy nomination and countless tours later, UK fans continue to champion and support Machine Head as feverishly as they did at those first shows, and this year, at Bloodstock Open Air 2012, they will be given the unprecedented opportunity to influence Machine Head’s set list!
"Commemorating the 20th anniversary of Machine Head’s first-ever live performance at their roadie Mike Scum's getting-evicted-from-his-house party - for which they performed five songs – Bloodstocker ticket holders will be given the opportunity to vote for the five 'Burn My Eyes' songs they most want to hear Machine Head play during their headline set Saturday night, with the five that receive the most votes included in the set list (details to follow)!
"Anyone that’s ever witnessed Machine Head live will attest to the fact that the raw, unbridled energy of their performance is unlike anything else you’ll ever see. With countless legendary UK performances already on record, and a first-ever fan-influenced setlist, it goes without saying that Machine Head’s headline set at Bloodstock Open Air 2012 is going to go down in metal history as one of those festival performances that you’ll forever be glad you got to see. Keep an eye on the official Bloodstock Facebook page for your chance to vote on the songs YOU want to hear."

The Bloodstock 2012 organizers have announced a further three acts for the Sophie stage at this year's festival.
Returning to Catton Hall, Witchsorrow threatens the British summer time with downtuned doom and gloom that echoes metal greats such as St Vitus, Candlemass and Trouble. Says mainman Necro Skull: "We are truly honoured to be returning to cast a shadow over Bloodstock once more. We promise you total doom annihilation, a celebration for the damned as the end of the world looms at the end of this wretched annum. To be in the company of such excellent bands as Watain, Alice Cooper, Orange Goblin, Grand Magus and Winterfylleth is a grand thing indeed. God curse us, every one!"
Returning for the second year in a row, London loud-louts Dripback take a break from the studio to come back to the Sophie stage with their seething mix of hardcore and death metal. The band commented, “For us it’s all about being intense in tents, so this really is the perfect festival slot for Dripback. We’re all so buzzing about playing with Crowbar, Hatebreed, Testament and all the other awesome bands, this really is the best festival."
Finally, Swiss thrashers Battalion make their UK debut at Bloodstock. The Thrash Maniacs check in to say: “It's the first time for us to play in England! What a fucking start! We're looking forward to kick some ass there!!! See ya Bloodstock! Cheers from Zurich, the Battalion-Bastards.”
Finnish pagan metal outfit Moonsorrow and German power metal group Freedom Call have been confrmed as the latest two bands to take part in this years edition of the British metal festival, Bloodstock Open Air, which will take place at Catton Hall in Walton On Trent, Derbyshire from August 10th-12th.
Speaking on the confirmation, Moonsorrow stated: "We are truly excited to take part in Bloodstock Festival 2012. It's been way too long since we played on the British soil in 2008 and we know that lately there has been a huge demand for Moonsorrow to play in the UK. So, all our loyal fans in the UK, we want to see a massive crowd of insane berserks during our set. Don't let us down because we promise we don't let you down, cheers!"
Freedom Call added: "The Bloodstock Festival is the pulsating heart of Heavy Metal...a great audience, which knows exactly to revel."
The lineup for the festival is now as follows: More...
With a plethora of metal talent already on offer - including Alice Cooper, Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir, Testament, Hatebreed and loads more - Bloodstock Open Air has another addition to it’s main stage, in the form of New Orleans sludge-monsters Crowbar. The organizers of the festival commented:
"The epitome of heavy, Kirk Windstein and co have been showing the world that speed isn’t everything since their debut 'Obedience Thru Suffering' stunned the metal world in 1991 with its downtuned, slow-paced yet punishingly heavy sound. With nine studio albums under their very large belts, Crowbar have mastered the art of the riff, continually delivering irresistible sludgey metal via a sound uniquely their own. With mammoth sludgey slabs such as 'I Despise,' 'All I Had (I Gave),' 'Time He’s Nothing,' 'Like Broken Glass,' 'Nothing' and many more, the Ronnie James Dio Stage will be put to the test at Crowbar’s only UK festival of 2012.
"Over on the Sophie stage, additions come in the form of homegrown extreme symphonic metallers and Metal 2 The Masses winners Saturnian, fellow countrymen and Melo-death thrashers Bloodshot Dawn, as well as Finnish melodic death metallers Re-Armed."

Vocalist Bruce Dickinson had the following comments on the tour:
We have great fun playing the History of Maiden Tours because it gives us an opportunity between new albums to go out and play songs from our earlier catalogue. It’s always fantastic seeing the crowd reaction from a new generation of fans who have never experienced some of these tracks performed live before, and of course we know our longstanding fans will enjoy seeing the original Seventh Son Tour re-visited - with many other surprises! Our intention is to play about two thirds of the original track list of Maiden England (shown below*), including some songs we have not played live in a very, very long time, plus other favourites we just know the fans are going to want to hear! We always try to give our fans a great show musically, but we have always tried to make it as entertaining and memorable an experience as we can visually. And we all feel this show is going to do that splendidly! We can't wait to get started in Charlotte.More...
