Past Fun Fun Fun Festivals that I covered featured one or two metal headliners on the black stage and one day dominated by punk. This year the third day of the festival included punk but rock in general was the main flavor of the day. Metal was not the style closing out the Black Stage, but headliner Murder City Devils played hard and heavy. There is something about this band that just fits with the festival, as the Seattle-based band made it’s third appearance. The garage rock group played powerful hooks and electric organ that sounded like The Doors making a soundtrack for a Hammer Horror film. I believe this was their first headline performance at FFF. The band was definitely up to it.

Saturday, March 14, the roads seem quiet compared to the previous night. Part of this was due to my moving back to Red River Street and away from Dirty Sixth. Everybody seemed tired, and as a publicist opined to me, Thursday morning's crash on Red River casted bad mojo onto the festivities. Whatever the cause, there was no 1001 person to flood a capacity venue. More...
Friday, March 14, 2014, my third day attending SXSW music festivities, started just after 3 pm. This event was my only excursion outside of live music. Members of Landshark Promotions and DJ Chuck Loesch of 101X "No Control Radio" premiered a CD of the Ronnie James Dio tribute album "This Is Your Life." The three-person panel presented each track from the forthcoming recording featuring an all-star lineup of modern and classic metal artists. It felt good singing along to these majestic reworkings done in the name of charity. 100% of the proceeds will go towards Wendy Dio's "Ronnie James Dio Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund" .

By now, thousands of badge and wrist band wearers have consumed hundreds of film premieres and attended conferences on the latest innovations in the fields of interactive technology and education. Now it's time to pump up the volume and flip a middle finger at mainstream music as we descend into the festival's music segment. This year reveals a full week of metallic offerings. Check below for a listing of metal themed official showcases (times and card may be subject to change). More...
