Saxon Announces "Unplugged And Strung Up"

British heavy metal legends Saxon have produced a series of alternative takes on classic favorites to herald a new entry to the Saxonian Institute of Metal. The following statement was issued about the coming "Unplugged and Strung Up" release:

"There is always feral beauty in a raging beast…and with 'Unplugged And Strung Up,' Saxon's selection of unique, fresh and adventurous interpretations of material previously heard only with raw heavy metal thunder, the point is triumphantly underscored.

"Unplugged And Strung Up reveals layers and pieces previously dormant in many of the 14 classic Saxon songs chosen for this makeover, thanks to some ear-catching new arrangements and mixes. Recorded, mixed and mastered with Andy Sneap in Derbyshire, U.K. earlier this year, Unplugged And Strung Up contains re-evaluated, re-worked and re-energized versions of The Eagle Has Landed and Crusader by introducing orchestral dynamics to offer added dimension. Frozen Rainbow, from the band's 1979 debut, gets a stunning acoustic reprisal which transports it into a power ballad to be proud of, while Red Star Falling soars and sweeps the emotions with its orchestral arranged dovetail.

"As if this reinvention wasn't enough, Saxon super fans and collectors can purchase a digipak version of the release which will include 2002's storming set of full-volume, pedal-to-the-metal re-recorded hits Heavy Metal Thunder. Featuring staple Saxon stormers such as Motorcycle Man, Strong Arm Of The Law, and Dallas 1pm, it is a quintessential part of any collection. More...

Sunday Old School 200: Monsters Of Rock

This week’s edition of Sunday Old School is a very special one because today sees Sunday Old School reach two hundred official articles! So to celebrate this little milestone of ours, I wanted to look back in rock and metal history and find a true landmark moment in the genre. A moment that let the world know that heavy music was here to stay and meant so much to so many. And nothing seemed like a bigger moment in general metal history than when promoter Paul Loasby teamed up with Maurice Jones and formed a festival, which was to be held at Donington Park in Leicestershire, England, and would be known as Monsters of Rock.

The one day event was initially scheduled to be a grand final date for Rainbow’s UK tour, a band whom Loasby had recently been promoting. Rainbow were joined at the inaugural event by established German rockers, the Scorpions, who had just released their seventh album, "Animal Magnetism" and Judas Priest, who were riding high thanks to the wildly successful, "British Steel" album. Also on the bill that day were heavy metal upstarts, Saxon, who were considered the leaders of the exciting young, New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement at the time, Canadian hard rock veterans, April Wine and New York openers Riot and Touch. The festival was a resounding success, drawing in thirty five thousand fans and a live compilation album, which sold well.

Although it was initially conceived only as a vehicle for Rainbow, it was announced on the day of the first edition that the festival would return the next year. AC/DC were to be the headliners in 1981, marking the first of their record holding three headline appearances at the event. It was a somewhat lighter tone in the sophomore year, where AC/DC were joined Whitesnake, American stars, Blue Oyster Cult and quite interestingly, British glam rock veterans, Slade, who had recently found favour with the heavy metal audience after a brief time out of the limelight. Rounding off the bill was Blackfoot, a Southern Rock band from Jacksonville, Florida and More, who were notable for featuring former Iron Maiden vocalist, Paul Day, as well as a DJ set from the BBC’s voice of rock, Tommy Vance. The varied lineups continued, with Status Quo (AKA, your nan’s favourite band) headlining the event in 1982, where they were joined by other established rockers such as Gillan, Uriah Heep and Hawkwind, as well as a young Canadian group named, Anvil and Monsters of Rock veterans, Saxon, who became the first band to appear twice, before Whitesnake closed the event in 1983, which also featured Meat Loaf and ZZ Top, who were placed higher than such heavy metal favourites as Dio, Diamond Head and Twisted Sister. Saxon will be releasing the "Sacrifice" album in the U.S. on March 26th, 2013 and will also be hitting the road in Europe this summer. The band has now checked in with the following announcement about the support act for the coming dates:

"We are happy to announce that AC Angry will be support No. 1 and opening act for our European dates in June apart from Saxon's festival appearances!

"AC ANGRY stands for pent-up anger channelled into a feisty rock 'n' roll attitude. Their sound is comparable to early Wonderfools, coupled with desert riff grooves and a touch of late Turbonegro and their roots lie clearly in the classic rock 'n' metal of the 80s!

"AC ANGRY are facing 2013 with high anticipation. The debut album 'Black Denim' – produced by Phil Hillen (Powerwolf, Parachutes, The Vision Bleak, Vendetta) at SU2 Studio - will finally be released. Iconic illustrator Jan Meininghaus (U.D.O., Bolt Thrower, Brainstorm) is responsible for the perfectly fitting artwork. AC ANGRY are demonstrating with a total of 10 songs how a dirty rock 'n' roll album is supposed to sound!

Saxon Announces DVD's International Release

Saxon will be releasing the new album "Sacrifice" this coming February, and now the band has also posted the following announcement about an international release for the "Heavy Metal Thunder" movie:

"The silver eagle has finally landed for audiences worldwide! After enjoying a limited 'Fan Club Only' UK release, 'Heavy Metal Thunder – The Movie,' Saxon's wonderfully unfiltered and intimate account of their ascent to the upper echelons of heavy metal, will finally enjoy an international release this December.

"Rivetingly honest, and including the frank memories of every musician who has played in the band, 'Heavy Metal Thunder – The Movie' pieces together the earliest incarnations of Saxon, from frontman Biff Byford's teenage years in the coalmines of 'Yorkshire' and 'Son Of A Bitch' (the first incarnation of Saxon) all the way through to top 10 hits and world tours. Nothing is forsaken and nothing skipped. 'Heavy Metal Thunder – The Movie' will entertain, engage and charm fans and non-fans alike. That's a truth as honest as the film itself…

"The exclusive fan packages contain not only the Blu-Ray or 2 Disc-DVD, but also a Saxon 'Heavy Metal Thunder - The Movie' T-Shirt! Order now online at UDR Shop or Digital Stores." More...

Saxon Comments On Upcoming Album "Sacrifice"

Saxon will release the new album "Sacrifice" this coming February 2013 through UDR as the successor to previous album "A Call To Arms."

"Less tricks, more power!" roars frontman and founding father Biff Byford, "my brief to the band was to be raw, be real and not be afraid to look back at the old classic material for inspiration." The following press release was also issued about the album:

"The album was recorded at LS Studios in Yorkshire and was produced by Byford with Andy Sneap mixing and engineering by Jacky Lehmann. It fairly bristles with muscular metallic intent, Paul Quinn's and Doug Scarratt's guitar work the best it's ever been, while Biff's vocals sound fresher and livelier. The songwriting too harks back to a classic era in Saxon's history, with the likes of 'Warriors Of The Road,' 'Wheels Of Terror,' and 'Stand Up And Fight' evoking the halcyon days of yore with a contemporary twist, the classic Saxon sound absorbing the snarl, ferocity and attitude of contemporary bands (and fans) such as Megadeth, as evidenced by the crunching title cut 'Sacrifice.'"

"It's certainly been done from a more early '80s thrashier perspective," explains Biff, "and it's not just guitars bashing away willy-nilly, they've got a fresh drive, purpose and perspective."

Besides the new material, Saxon will also be adding some unique recordings of revisited classic to certain formats of the release, also produced by Byford and mastered by Andy Sneap, including an orchestrated version of 'Crusader' and an acoustic version of 'Frozen Rainbow.'

"From the songs to the production, I wanted to focus on the raw aspects which made us great in the first place," concludes Biff, "And living in that rawness, combined with some great classic Saxon-songwriting, has in my opinion made Saxon fresher than ever."
