According to 7Days.ae, British heavy metal legends SAXON will not be performing at this year's Dubai Desert Rock Festival — set to take place on March 16 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates — because one of their songs from the 1980s includes lyrics about freeing the Holy Land and spilling Muslim blood.
Concert organizers Centre Stage Management (CSM) said yesterday (March 12) that Dubai's Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) had withdrawn permission for the band to perform on Thursday "without citing a specific reason."
However, CSM said that controversy created by the publication of the song's lyrics in local media had influenced the decision.
"Band members were immediately labelled in most Arabic newspapers as racists, Arab haters, who wanted to put all Muslims to the sword," Joann Shams, business development manager for CSM said.
No one from the DTCM was available for comment yesterday. Last week, a local Arab paper translated and published the lyrics to SAXON's 1984 song "Crusader" and said:
"The question here for the band and the organisers is what will SAXON do in Dubai's land and on Arabian sands? Are they going to make us, the Saracen heathens, taste their music just as if their guitars were swords made of steel."
"SAXON...calls for the mass extermination of Arabs," the article added. CSM said the band’s management was informed last night and that they expressed "shock" over the decision.
In a statement by SAXON's management, the band said, "We are very disappointed that we can’t play to our fans in the Middle East. We are not and never have been a racist band. The lyrics of the song 'Crusader' have been taken totally out of context. Many of the songs we write are based on historical events e.g. 'Dallas 1 PM' (Kennedy's assassination), 'Conquistador' (The Conquest of South America), 'Crusader' (The 12th Century) — the songs are not intended to be taken as any form of propaganda, the song is a snapshot of an event in history, the lyrics are intended to give a flavour of what it must have been like in the army at the time. Saladin, the leader of the Saracens, was also a mighty warrior and his battles would make a good vehicle for a great metal song as well.
"The journalist who wrote about 'Crusader' was obviously trying to cause as much trouble as possible. We don't write lyrics to inside hatred or racism, we have fans all over the world of every colour and religion and music should be used to break down barriers and not to build them."
SAXON had been scheduled to arrive on Thursday morning (March 16) and perform alongside five other bands, including MEGADETH, at Desert Rock. More than 4,000 tickets have been sold so far and organisers expect 8,000 to turn up, according to 7Days.ae.

Unfortunately, here's some bad news coming your way. Due to reasons beyond our control, we are not able to play the scheduled dates with Saxon in the UK as well as some other shows that are or have been (still) in the works for the next time. For all you people in South Europe and especially those that have seen some posted dates in the clubs and online already, there have also been some Brainstorm shows scheduled in Spain, France, Italy and Greece for end of October/ beginning of November, which we can not play as well. We feel totally sorry as we would have loved to play the UK together with the mighty Saxon and South Europe again for all you fantastic Brainiacs out there. We will try to re-scedule or set up new shows as soon as possible, keep on surfing by, we'll keep you updated.
According to the web site of the B.B. King's Blues Club in New York City, British heavy metal legends SAXON are scheduled to perform at the venue on Tuesday November 1, 2005. Two days later, on Thursday November 3, 2005, SAXON are scheduled to play the Jaxx nightclub in West Springfield, Virginia. Support at the Jaxx show will come from long-running American metallers BLACK WIDOW.
SAXON were originally slated to embark on a U.S. tour in May but ended up cancelling the dates as a result of frontman Biff Byford wanting to stay by his family's side after suffering a major loss in February when his house in the Normandie area of France burned down. In that incident, Biff, his wife and their children got out of the house at the very last minute and nobody was hurt.
Saxon have now re-scheduled those UK dates which were recently postponed. They now happen at:
October 16 - Bradford Rio
October 17 - Dudley JB's
October 18 - Nottingham Rock City
October 19 - Edinburgh Luquid Room

Stratovarius/Saxon drummer Jörg Michael has posted this message on his official website:
this is Jörg Michael speaking!
Wow, a lot of time passed by since I posted the last statement here and so there is a lot of things to tell.
Probably you guys have heard about the tragic accident of last weekend when Biff's house burnt down in the north of France. It's very hard to cope with a tragedy like this but on this way I like to send best supporting regards over to Biff and his family and hope they will recover soon! Good news are that nobody got hurt, that is the the most important thing I suppose! Let´s cross our fingers that Biff's life is going back to normal as fast as possible!
Hot news since a couple of weeks is the reunification of Stratovarius. Yes, this is very big news in my life and especially the fact that Timo Tolkki is doing much better, and is able to work again. We are working on the new material, of course I am very excited about what will come of it! At this point I'd like to explain that Stratovarius means something very special to me. I have been together with these guys now for about 10 years. We started really at the bottom and lived a dream together, seeing the band growing and also developing the relationships. I wouldn't lie if I say that we all became friends in this band. We have a saying in German that you need 11 friends to be successful with a football team, but I would say it is very hard even to meet 11 friends in a lifetime.
I also saw some confusion about this on the Saxon web site and I would like to tell the things from my point of view. I hope it will clear all the fog away and give everybody an understanding about my situation! Stratovarius was in a big crisis at the beginning of last year, and I got a call out of the Saxon camp asking me to do their new record. That was a great honour for me and I packed my drum kit in the van, drove to England and auditioned 2 days and the boys liked what I was doing! Also we were talking about touring at that time. I already said at that point that I don't know what will happen with Stratovarius, but I promised Biff that I will be there for the whole Lionheart tour and we got a deal! For me it was an absolute great pleasure and almost a dream to play an album and a tour with one of my all time faves. The Saxon tour was an absolute blast for me, after starting the first shows in a kind of safe mood the whole band got more and more beserk so I really enjoyed every single second being on stage. I mean, playing masterpieces like Solid Ball of Rock, Motorcycle Man, Crusader, Dogs of War, 20.000 feet, etc., only to name a few... and I am not even mentioning the Lionheart stuff yet... made my evil little heart jump up and down and blew me away. Everybody knows the heart breaking skull cracking riff blasting guitars, solid pumping pounding iron bass with Nibbs going insane on stage, but I have to say one more thing: Biff on stage as a front man and singer is bloody fucking brilliant and asks for all my respect, bloody English... -:). This is no put honey around Biff's mouth or put my head into Biff's ass, this is my honest opinion! Also I haven't forgotten the metal maniacs visiting the shows who gave me great support all over Europe and a fantastic feel playing in Saxon, thank you very much for that. A that point I shouldn't forget big thanx for every single road crew member as everybody gave me support and all the help I needed to feel a part of the family since the first day. Very special thanx go to Django and Duce, both are supermen and probably the best drum technicians in the world!!! Muriel and Emile my friends who run the web page put a couple of photos of the tour on the site, check them out and enjoy them! And as everybody know the Lionheart tour didn´t end yet so I am still part of that! I think there will be still a lot of rockin' to do.
I'll watch out to see you all around!
Saxon have re-scheduled those UK dates which they've been forced to postpone from March. The shows will now happen at Bradford Rio October 16, Dudley JB's 17, Nottingham Rock City 18, Edinburgh Liquid Rooms 19. Brainstorm will be the support act.
Saxon and the management are sorry that they have to cancel the planned tour of Saxon in March 2005 and postpone these dates to September / October 2005.
This is due to a devastating fire at the home of singer Biff Byford. They are happy to say that no one has been injured. New dates will be annouced soon on http://www.Saxon747.com.
