A number of documentaries pertaining to specific scenes and genres in heavy metal, most notably grindcore and black metal, have been posted online via YouTube and are now available to watch, uninterupted, from start to finish. "Grindcore - 85 Minutes Of Brutal Heavy Metal," features segments on a number of bands signed to Earache Records during the 1990's, including Napalm Death, Morbid Angel, Godflesh, Carcass and Paradise Lost amongst others and includes live footage, interviews and music videos.
Meanwhile, two different documentaries on black metal have also been posted online, including "Until The Light Takes Us," which examines the black metal scene in Norway during the 1990's and looks at such bands as Burzum and Darkthrone, complete with interviews with Gylve "Fenriz" Nagell and the then incarcerated Varg Vikernes. Alternatively, there is "Murder Music: A History of Black Metal," a British documentary hosted by Contraband Candy host René Ackermann that gives a much broader insight into black metal, tracing the genre's roots from the theatrics of Black Widow to the Christian black metal scene, and everything in between. You can view all of these films below. More...

Police.nsw.gov.au has issued a statement warning music fans attending the upcoming Soundwave festival that police will be actively searching for drug users and dealers. The press release can be read below.
Police will run a high-visibility operation at this weekend’s Soundwave Music Festival, targeting illegal and anti-social behaviour.
Operation Koolah will run at the festival, to be held at Olympic Park from 10am to 6pm on Sunday (27 February 2011). Police from the Drug Detection Dogs Unit, Mounted Police and the Licensing Unit will make up a large component of the police presence that will be targeting anti-social behaviour and alcohol-related offences.
The NSW Police event commander, Detective Superintendent Greg Rolph, said that the majority of party-goers have enjoyed themselves within the law in recent years. Despite this we still see a small number of revellers who insist on participating in illegal and anti-social behaviour.
“There will be drug detection dogs as well as a large number of overt and covert police resources aimed at catching those taking or dealing illegal drugs.
“Recreational drugs can be incredibly dangerous and anyone bringing them to the event can expect to be caught.nn“We have worked together with event organisers and other interest groups to ensure the best possible plans are in place to make the event as safe as possible – it is now up to the patrons to do their part,” Detective Superintendent Rolph said.
Bands scheduled to appear at the festival include Iron Maiden, Rob Zombie, Dimmu Borgir, All That Remains, and many more. Additional details on the festival can be found at this location.
Symphonic black metal band Dimmu Brogir will be performing one show with a special, never-to-be-repeated set list with 53 members of KORK (the Norwegian Radio Orchestra) and 30 members of the Schola Cantorum Choir, who were musical guests on the band's Billboard-charting ninth studio album, “Abrahadabra." The show is set to take place on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at the Oslo Spektrum in Norway.
Dimmu Borgir guitarist Silenoz states, “It is with great pride and a sense of fulfillment that we can finally announce this event as yet another ambition becomes reality!”
Vocalist Shagrath adds: “Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen. Dimmu Borgir makes it happen. The circle will now be complete.”
Tickets go on sale on Monday, February 21st for 570 Norwegian kroner (approx. 73,50 EUR). Only 150 V.I.P. tickets (1,500 Norwegian kroner each, approx. 193,50 EUR) will be available, which will include a Meet & Greet with the band one hour before doors, free tapas & beer, and a view of the entire performance from a special riser. Blame it on the liquored egg nog or a simple exuberance to finally tear open those beautiful packages under the tree, but somehow we didn't get up the list of new Rock Band Network metal songs last Friday. Just because it isn't the weekend doesn't mean you can't pull down the plastic guitars and get a-rocking, though, as this week sees quite a few new metal entries to the game.

It has been announced that former Dimmu Borgir bassist and clean vocalist I.C.S. Vortex will be releasing a solo album in 2011. The debut album from I.C.S. Vortex, titled "Storm Seeker," is set to feature 11 songs as well as guitars performed by Jens F. Ryland of Borknagar and Steinar Gundersen on bass.
I.C.S. Vortex commented on the album by saying:
"Brewed in a dirty metal pot, ingrediens included are stoner rock mashed with black metal, '70s prog-spiked pagan and alternative roots fried Norwegian style. Some of the song titles are 'Skoal!', 'Dogsmacked', 'Oil in Water' and 'Odin's Tree'.
"It's been a year of sporadic work at Toproom Studio with engineer Børge Finstad. My good old teammate from Borknagar, Asgeir Mickelson handles the drums, and Terje 'Cyrus' Andersen added some solos. Mix was done by Børge, Asgeir and me. A record deal is in the works and we're looking at a release in good time before summer 2011.
"The solo project has pretty much evolved into a band, and on future live appearances the recording lineup will be joined by Jens F. Ryland (Borknagar) on guitar and Steinar Gundersen (Sarke) on bass."
