Anvil Readies Re-Release of "This Is Thirteen"

Certainly one of the most feel-good rock n' roll comeback stories of recent times is that of Canadian heavy metal band Anvil. The band, considered a major influence for a generation of hard rockers including Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Guns N' Roses, was the subject of a critically acclaimed, must-see rock-doc, "Anvil! The Story of Anvil," directed by Sacha Gervasi. And in the process, the film has made the group (led by singer/guitarist Steve "Lips" Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner - both founding members) a household name. But the group's story will certainly not end with the film.

First up for Anvil are U.S. shows opening for Aussie rock legends AC/DC - in football stadiums. "We're really excited about these shows, we've only heard awesome things about playing in football stadiums. I was with the Green Day guys last night, and they were telling me, 'Man, it's probably going to be the gig of your life'!"

And then on September 15, "This is Thirteen" will finally see proper national distribution on CD and vinyl via VH1 Classic Records. The CD will feature the newly recorded, never-before released bonus track "Thumb Hang." The collectible double vinyl LP boasts newly re-recorded versions of Anvil classics "Metal on Metal" and "666." The album, originally recorded in 2007 and produced by Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy), was primarily available directly from the band via their website and at their concerts.

"'This is Thirteen' is more like our first three albums," says Lips, "which represent our real identity. For many of our albums, we went on an 'integrity hunt' instead of on a 'commercial/radio hunt,' so we became extremely inaccessible to radio. This time, we stepped back and said, 'What were we originally?' And we rediscovered ourselves, I suppose." Reiner adds, "There are three tracks that in my opinion, are definitely, 100% AOR/hard rock/commercial radio tracks - 'American Refuge,' 'Flying Blind,' and 'Feed the Greed.' Catchy melodies, incredible drum feels - they just all rock." More...

The Rockstar Ramblings: Size Does Matter

As we stumble upon the summer tour season we constantly hear the phrase “big” tour. Whether it is in reference to the number of bands playing, number of asses in the seats, or size of the stage show, a lot of bands claim to own the “big show” title.

Bands like Van Halen, Guns N’ Roses, and Aerosmith (among others) for years have touted their tours in this regard and all (to some degree) have a right to throw their hat in the circle. This year is no exception: Kiss is following up a new album with what they are calling their biggest show ever, Metallica is again filling arenas on the road, and festivals drawing many bands are still going strong. Does tour “size” need to be qualified? Probably not, but what the hell….I personally haven’t given much thought to this until this week when I read the following: As AC/DC prepares for their Australian tour there is word that they will need forty-eight semi trailers to haul their equipment. Forty-eight trailers? I’ll let that one hang there for a minute… More...

AC/DC Concert Turns Ugly

An AC/DC concert in Norway ended in a near riot on Wednesday as fans clashed with police.

According to Budstikka.no there were severe problems for fans trying to get into the venue for the show as long traffic jams caused many people to be late for the start of the concert. But then the real trouble started after the concert at the Telenor Arena near Oslo when more static traffic and a lack of public transport left a number of fans stranded.

Reports suggest that fans turned on the police as the transport problems worsened, throwing bottles at patrol cars and tearing down crowd control fences.

Police apparently blamed poorly organised transport systems and frustrated alcohol-fuelled rock fans, but despite the trouble they made no arrests.

Helix Recording AC/DC Cover Song

Canadian hard rockers Helix have issued the following update about their original line-up reuniting to record an AC/DC cover song:

"I’ve been getting a lot of mail commenting on the band (from the No Rest for the Wicked line-up) is getting back together to record “IT’S A LONG WAY TO THE TOP IF YOU WANNA ROCK AND ROLL”. This week there were good vibes all ‘round.

"Fritz (Greg Hinz) came in to lay down the drum tracks on Sunday. His common law wife Brenda Sherred, who is also one of our closest friends, came along to spend the day with Lynda back at Planet Helix. They brought along the new addition to their family-Tanner-a puppy Labrador Retriever-to keep Harmony occupied as well.

"The tracks went quickly and well. Fritz was in his glory and you could tell he was having a blast. Gord and Aaron were also all smiles at the prospect of recording someone they grew up as kids listening to. After the session Fritz and I headed back to Planet Helix for supper and to catch the first half of the Super bowl game. More...
