New Bands Added To Brutal Assault 2017

A bunch of new bands have been announced for the 22nd edition of Brutal Assault, which takes place this year in Fortress Josefov near Jaromer in the Czech Republic on August 9-12. Returning once more are heavy-weights Hatebreed, who last graced the fortress stages in 2012 and 2013. This is reportedly in response to festival-goers requests for more hardcore in the line-up.

The Dillinger Escape Plan will be including the festival in their series of farewell dates. It looks like the band's appearance here won't be affected by the bus crash that caused some European tour dates to be cancelled last month. Dillinger last played Brutal Assault in 2015.

Thrash veterans Overkill, touring in support of their recently released 18th studio album, "The Grinding Wheel", have also been added. No stranger to the fortress stage, Overkill last appeared at the festival in 2013.

Helsinki's Wintersun are newcomers to Brutal Assault, appearing for the first time. Can we assume they will be playing material from their long-awaited third album? There's no official word as yet. More...

Nile Recruits New Member

Nile will embark on a next tour in support of "What Should Not Be Unearthed" today - February 14th, 2017 - alongside Overkill while visiting 24 cities across America. The band today also announces that Dallas Toler-Wade has decided to leave Nile to focus on his own plans and recordings.

This tour also marks the debut of Nile’s newest member, guitarist / vocalist Brian Kingsland. After this tour, the band is scheduled to return to Europe this Summer for a series of metal festivals followed by a WSNBU-Latin America tour.

Nile is already working on songs for the band's next album, which will be recorded in late 2017 for an early 2018 release. More info will be released in the coming months.

Karl Sanders comments: "I would like to personally thank Dallas Toler-Wade for his many years with the band, and sincerely wish him well with his music. All of us in Nile are truly happy and thankful to be working with Brian. Not only is he a seriously talented extreme metal guitar shredder, but he has a great brutal metal voice, with a very versatile range.

"Brian is also a genuine, down-to-earth hard-working and motivated guy who has helped reignite and re-establish a sense of team work back into Nile. With the addition of Brian on guitar and vocals, the band right now seems to me a lot more like the early years of Nile - the classic Nile era when we were all functioning as a cohesive unit, in viciously brutal triple vocal attack mode. Gojira, Nile Drop Off 70,000 Tons Of Metal Roster

Just a week before the seventh installment of 70,000 Tons of Metal shoves off from Port Everglades, Florida bound for Labadee, Haiti - UMC promoter Andy announced that Gojira and Nile were forced from the roster. This brings the total bands to 57, with one and two replacement acts left to be revealed.

The announcement reads: "Sailors! This is your Skipper speaking. Unfortunately, I have some bad news to share with you.

"Gojira will not be joining us on board next week. This is due to a serious medical issue of a very close family member that requires them to get back home at a moment's notice should the situation get worse. This is possible while they are on tour in their home country, but not while they are on a ship at Sea at the other end of the world. I am sure I speak for all of us when I send this message to France: Nous souhaitons de tout cœur beaucoup de force et de confiance, ainsi qu'un bon rétablissement!

"If that was not enough bad news, there's more. We will also be sailing without Nile. The situation there is that their new bass player will not receive his visa in time for the cruise. Normally he would not need one if they would only play the cruise, but since they are also going on tour in the US right afterwards he unfortunately needs a US work visa. Together with their management I tried to move heaven and earth to make this happen but at this point we are simply out of time.

"Trust me that I am as frustrated as all of you about this situation. I am working around the clock to fill this gap it has created in our line-up.

"I will make sure that we have adequate replacements on board 70,000 Tons of Metal, The Original, The World's Biggest Heavy Metal Cruise. Stay tuned!"

The Summer Slaughter Tour At Concord Music Hall

I'll admit that I've been out of the death metal scene for a few years and mostly listening to a lot of already established artists at the expense of new ones. In fact, I haven't been to a Summer Slaughter since 2011. So it was good to see a concert full of artists who I mostly haven't seen yet. Some really impressed me, other didn't. Either way, I wanted to be surprised by hearing artists who I mostly wasn't familiar with.

This year's Summer Slaughter Tour was primarily backed by Sumerian Records (who were also a major backer of Chicago Open Air) as a promotion of Sumerian's upcoming entry into films with American Satan. I'd normally have a problem with the biggest annual heavy metal tour in North America being rendered into a commercial for something completely unrelated but the former bearer of that torch was really just an advertisement for Monster Energy Drink. Belphegor Accosted By Fanatic At Airport

Update: Belphegor has now issued a statement about both the airport fiasco and experiencing extreme censorship and cancelled shows in Russia on this trek. Read it over here.

Although there has been no official statement from the band at this point, a video is circulating of some sort of fundamentalist (apparently religious, but it's unclear as there are no subtitles) verbally accosting Belphegor at a Russian airport.

At one point the man even spits in a member of Belphegor's face (appears to be front man Helmuth?), and then hilariously doesn't like it when the favor is immediately returned.

Karl Sanders of Nile (out on tour with Belphegor) then steps in to stop the situation from escalating. Any of our Russian speaking readers able to translate this video for us?

Nile And Melechesh Unearth Darkness In Bristol

The Bierkeller in Bristol has hosted some of the most respected names in rock, metal, hardcore and punk over the years. It's an ideal venue to welcome these bands too, as it can hold around seven hundred people, with plenty of space, yet feel like an intimate concert, not least because it's not uncommon to see members of the groups walking around, drinking and taking photos with the crowd. All this made it pretty much perfect for the night's show, as American death metal veterans Nile brought their What Should Not Be Unearthed tour to Britain's seventh largest city, and with them, Jerusalemite black metallers Melechesh and Italian death metal act, Embryo.

It was Embryo who kicked off the evening's festivities, taking to the stage with only a small audience to perform to. Right from the start, they let the crowd know just what they had before them: Five hungry young men whose appetite for death metal was insatiable. There's a lot to enjoy about this band, whose brutality is married to a groove many attempt, but few can capture. As the number of people in the venue grew, so too did the appreciation for the band, who maintained a professional demeanour, despite their clear joy to be a part of such a tour. While they may not be a household name (in households who listen to extreme music anyway,) Embryo could yet become one of Italy's most beloved metal bands if they continue their quality songwriting and live intensity. Nile Posts New Lyric Video

Nile just released a lyric video for the track "Evil To Cast Out Evil," taken from impending full-length album "What Should Not Be Unearthed," due out August 28 through Nuclear Blast. Mastermind Karl Sanders states:

"Out of sheer appreciation for our fans, who have unequivocally made known their demands ; the members of Nile have agreed to release a second preview track from our upcoming 'What Should Not be Unearthed' album.

"The song is called 'Evil to Cast out Evil.' This lyric video comes without a prefaced disclaimer, or warning label, as it seems that some listeners / viewers completely ignore them anyway, and are determined to glean whatever random arbitrary messages from the song they damn well please. Well, OK, we understand - music and music videos are inherently artistic by nature, and are therefore OF COURSE subject to interpretation by the audience.

"But don’t say we didn’t warn you. The danger this time is not from radical terrorists, religious fanatics, left wing apologist sympathizers, self-important music critics, or right wing ultra-nationalists deliberately misinterpreting our music - hell bent on imposing Fox News ideology upon unsuspecting music fans.

"No, the danger this time is to your mortal soul. If upon hearing this song, you insist on repeated listens, or interminably bang your head, or even feel compelled against your will to sing along with this uber catchy metal anthem; then don’t blame us if you wake up the next morning with your head spinning around backwards, hurling green vomit, walking down stairs upside down on all fours like an inverted spider, or speaking to your Mom in a cookie monster voice at the breakfast table, or otherwise channeling the possessed spirit of Linda Blair. You have been sufficiently warned. Have a nice day and see you on tour!" More...

Nile Reveals New Album Track Listing

In anticipation of a new upcoming record, the masters of historical-themed brutality from Nile today reveal the track listing for "What Should Not Be Unearthed," which will be released on August 28th via Nuclear Blast.

Mastermind Karl Sanders comments on the band’s new output: “The goal for the new record was sheer epic brutality. The focus this time around is on brutal heavy metal riffing and songwriting; kind of like of an 'Annihilation Of The Wicked' approach but very streamlined to achieve maximum destructive impact.

"So we believe that we have a truly crushing disc to bring to metal fans. Although 'Unearthed' is still full of the kind of undeniable musicianship people have come to expect from us over the years, it’s the songs themselves that will hit listeners over the head this time around.”

01. Call To Destruction
02. Negating The Abominable Coils Of Apep
03. Liber Stellae Rubeae
04. In The Name Of Amun
05. What Should Not Be Unearthed
06. Evil To Cast Out Evil
07. Age Of Famine
08. Ushabti Reanimator
09. Rape Of The Black Earth
10. To Walk Forth From Flames Unscathed More...

Nile Unearths Something That Should Stay Buried

The reigning kings of technical, historically-themed brutality from Nile are currently in the studio wrapping up the mix of their upcoming album "What Should Not Be Unearthed."

Produced by Nike and mixed by Neil Kernon, the album will be released August 28th, 2015 via Nuclear Blast Records. The artwork (available below) was handled this time by Michal 'Xaay' Loranc. Mastermind Karl Sanders states:

“All of us in Nile are happy to announce our upcoming newest album 'What Should Not Be Unearthed.' It’s our 8th official album, and this time we believe we have a truly crushing disc to bring to metal fans. The focus this time around is on brutally heavy metal riffing and songwriting; kind of like of an 'Annihilation Of The Wicked' approach but very streamlined to achieve maximum destructive impact. Our last record, 'At The Gates Of Sethu,' was super surgically clean and very musicianship oriented whereas the new disc is a polar opposite; 'Unearthed' is aimed straight at utter metal heaviness and memorable songwriting.

"Although 'Unearthed' is still full of the kind of undeniable musicianship people have come to expect from Nile over the years, it’s the songs themselves that will hit listeners over the head this time around. These songs will be a blast to play live, and we are stoked at the opportunity to bring these songs to metal fans everywhere. See you on tour!” More...

Sunday Old School: Nile

History is a subject which may have bored many people in school, but even those who dozed off during lessons will agree that along with the occult and war, it makes for one of the best topics for heavy metal. Motorhead for example has written several songs about famous wars, as well as an album entitled, "1916," while Iced Earth took things further with a concept album about the American Civil War. Iron Maiden approached the culture of ancient Egypt on their fifth album, "Powerslave," and other bands have touched on it too. But for one band, this wondrous civilisation was to inspire not only their lyrics, but their album titles and even their name. Far away from the Pyramids, in Greensville, South Carolina in fact, this band came to life, under the moniker, Nile.

The group emerged from the remnants of a thrash metal band called Morriah, who achieved success locally and were able to perform some shows with the then emerging death metal champions such as Morbid Angel. After their dissolution in the early nineties, member Karl Sanders decided to form a new, heavier band, joined by bassist and vocalist, Chief Spires and drummer, Pete Hammoura. Their first release came two years after forming, with the 1995 EP, "Festivals of Atonement," which was distributed via their own label, Anubis Records. It circulated strongly and helped them to build up enough of a fan base to support the likes of Obituary and Deicide amongst other death metal giants. More...
