Los Angeles, California's Goatsnake is back in a big way: having spent the Summer at Rock Falcon Studios in Franklin, Tennessee, the band is gearing up to release a first new full-length album since 2000's "Flower Of Disease."
The new Goatsnake album, due for a release on Southern Lord next year, will feature the familiar faces of Greg Rogers (The Obsessed, Sonic Medusa), providing drums, Greg Anderson of Sunn O))) taking care of the riffs, Pete Stahl (Scream, Wool, Earthlings?) on vocals, and new bassist Scott Renner (Sonic Medusa, Sourvein).
Joining them again on production duties is Nick Raskulinecz, who, since being introduced to Dave Grohl during the recording sessions of "Flower Of Disease," has gone on to work with seminal artists such as Rush, Alice in Chains, Deftones and Ghost, and has won Grammys with the Foo Fighters.
Goatsnake came to life in 1996, and released two EPs, two LPs, two 7" records and a split between 1998 and 2000. In 2010 the outfit returned as a live band, playing a handful of shows in the U.S. and Europe in the years since.

Southern Lord Recordings has issued the following update about re-releasing the Goatsnake album "Flower of Disease:"
"Southern Lord Recordings is proud to re-unleash the long out-of-print Goatsnake album Flower Of Disease! The third official release from the almighty Goatsnake, this slick, thunderous eight-song slab of doom was initially released in 2000 on the now defunct Man's Ruin label, with Southern Lord handling the vinyl release. After lying dormant without an official pressing of the album in over eight years, the 'Lord now officially brings the album back to the masses on both CD and LP formats.
"Recorded at Hollywood's Grand Master Studios, and engineered by Nick Raskulinecz (Danzig, Foo Fighters, Probot, Alice In Chains), Flower Of Disease showcased Goatsnake elevating their already professional songwriting to new levels, deeply stirring those already following the act's every move and vacuuming in new countless new fans. This is "the release" that would solidify the Goatsnake name as one of the top bands of the '90s stoner/doom movement.
"The Goatsnake lineup on Flower Of Disease features members Greg Anderson (SUNN O))), Thorr's Hammer, Southern Lord Recordings), Pete Stahl (Scream, Wool, Desert Sessions), Greg Rogers (The Obsessed), and Stuart Dahlquist (Burning Witch, Asva), as well as guest contributions from Petra Haden and Dave Catching (Eagles of Death Metal, QOTSA, Mondo Generator)."

Southern Lord has officially announced the signing of two new bands into their eclectic, congregation of auditory purveyors. Coincidentally both bands are duos - each consisting of merely a guitarist and a drummer. The label welcomes Black Cobra and Eagle Twin.
Rafa Martinez and Jason Landrian have been coalescing Black Cobra's sonic brew for nearly six years now, yet neither were strangers to heaving heavy riffage prior, with Rafa doing time with Acid King and 16, and Jason in Cavity. But the pair unleashes a tone heavier than a trio of both guitar and drums. Their impenetrable hardcore doom chemistry evokes an intensity that sets them apart from the others, both live and recorded. The band has toured seemingly endlessly on both US and foreign soil since their 2002 inception, sharing the stage with The Sword, Weedeater, High On Fire, Torche and countless other bands in the upper ranks of metal and doom, most times blowing the competition away completely. Black Cobra plans to record their first album for Southern Lord sometime in the first half of 2009, with more info and tour dates to be announced very shortly.
Hailing from Salt Lake City, Eagle Twin has mainly solidified into proper form over the course of this year. Guitarist Gentry Densley is a very old friend whose previous band Iceburn was one of the most interesting and incredible bands of the '90s hardcore/post-hardcore movement. Gentry and Greg Anderson (Southern Lord, sunn 0))), Goatsnake) collaborated on the Ascend album Ample Fire Within record, released by Southern Lord earlier this year. The Eagle Twin sound is stained with early doom and blues-roots rock backing mythology of epic Old Testament proportions. The band will be recording their debut album with Randall Dunn (Earth, sunn 0)))) in Seattle this Winter and it should be released before summer of 2009.
Epic doomsters Asva will be kicking off the new year with a one-off show at the Maria in Berlin, Germany on January 28th. This is a rare opportunity to see the group charging through highlights from their recent album, "What You Don't Know Is Frontier."
Asva contains members of Sunn O))), Faith No More, Burning Witch, Mr Bungle and Goatsnake.
You can download an MP3 of Asva's song "A Trap For Judges" off their latest album.
ASCEND is a new collaborative musical project between Gentry Densley (Iceburn, Eagle Twin) and Greg Anderson (sunn 0))), Goatsnake, Engine Kid). Both have been making music that has crossed paths several times in the last 19 years, the most notable being during the 90s when Anderson's band Engine Kid toured with and shared a split album with Densely’s band Iceburn. During that time both were heavily experimenting with the fusion of jazz (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis, John Coltrane) and the dark behemoth tones of influences such as The Melvins, Gore, Slint, and Caspar Brotzman.
Hitting stores on May 27th, ASCEND re-visits some of the tones and moods of their past works as well as traveling into uncharted territory all done with the utmost focus on heaviness and power, with the album "Ample Fire Within." Of particular note is the vocal performance by Gentry Densley. His voice is deep and ominous with a subtle Tom Waits influence within the growls and gruffness that is emoted. Anderson gushes enthusiastically: "we were extremely fortunate to have a lot of help from our friends with this recording. Andy Patterson pounded the hell out of the drums, and Steve Moore (aka Stebmo, also in Earth and often times sunn 0))) ) added some trombone (“Obelisk of Kolob”, and “Dark Matter”), organ (“Her Horse Is Thunder”, “Dark Matter”) and some amazing wurlitzer (“Amplifier Within”, “Divine”). His playing brings a dark, sophisticated jazz atmosphere to the album. On the track "V O G" we were blessed to have Bubba Dupree (Void) AND none other than Kim Thayil (Soundgarden) put down some incredible lead work!"
The entire album was mixed by Randall Dunn (Earth, sunn 0))), Kinski,) and mastered by Mell Dettmer who is turning into the "house-mastering wizardress" for the Southern Lord label.
Below are a few samples from the album:
