Mastodon has checked in with the following announcement about gearing up to record a new full-length album:
"Mastodon has been busy jamming everyday writing and arranging the next studio album. Jägermeister has been a proud sponsor of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival since its inception and this year is no different.
This year the festival stage is being headlined by Machine Head, a legendary JagerWorld experience, The Metal of Honor Award, the brand’s first-ever Guitar Shred-Meister competition, Celebrity Chef signings, and daily artist signings for those of legal drinking age.
Chef Chris Santos will join the 2013 Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival for the remainder of the summer, where he will be taking part in signings at the Jägermeister booth, co-hosting the Shred-Meister competition, cooking Jägermeister-infused recipes at the official after-parties and for artists, and whipping up private meals for the headlining artists.
“I'm beyond excited to be joining the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival on behalf of Jagermeister and to spread the word about the Jägermeister 'Charred' BBQ Contest happening this summer,” states Santos. “I'll be doing signings daily and roaming the festival all day so if you see me grab me and say hello and we'll chat about Jäger or hit the pit!”
The chef's appearances are all a part of the “Charred, Earn your Place at the Pit” BBQ Competition, a search for the best grill recipes incorporating Jägermeister. The challenge, which kicked off in June, is divided into three categories: Cow, Bird, and Hog, from which Santos selects one winner per category. More...

The band travels to Europe a few days after performing at this year's Rock on the Range Festival on May 20th. Mastodon has been on the road since early April co-headlining a U.S. tour with Swedish metal band Opeth and special guest Ghost that wraps on May 12th with a show in Mastodon's hometown Atlanta at The Masquerade. Upcoming shows are as follows: More...
Opeth returned to central Texas for the second time since releasing “Heritage” in the fall of 2011. Prog/tech masters Mastodon and mysterious, occult metallers Ghost supported the Swedish troupe. This performance at San Antonio’s Backstage Live marked my first Opeth concert in nine years. The group has undergone many changes since then—changes of style, personnel and label—but coming into this show I had an overwhelming since of continuation, perhaps a sequel.
“Heritage” is the first Opeth album since “Damnation” comprised entirely of clean vocals. It’s still a heavy album, as was “Damnation,” but without Mikael Åkerfeldt’s bestial roar, Opeth doesn’t climb as high into the emotional stratosphere. Their showcasing of this material led to a performance focused more on melody than ferocity. Some of the buzz around the Internet gave the impression that the band were to play a snoozer. One person even likened their performance to a Lionel Richie show. A similar backlash occurred at the 2003 show with Porcupine Tree. Opeth played the entire “Damnation” album that night and didn’t include a single growled note.
In a Metal Underground interview before the show, drummer Martin Axenrot said the evening would contain some death metal, so it wasn’t quite the prog-only exhibition of 2003. It was a fairly chilled out evening, though. Although Mastodon only occasionally accosted the crowd with hard rock fury, guitar and vocal harmonies induced swaying sing a-longs rather than pits and head banging from the crowd. More...
The organisers of the British leg of the Sonisphere festival have announced that they have had to cancel this years event, which was set to feature headline performances from KISS, Faith No More and Queen + Adam Lambert, amongst others. The statement from the organisers reads as follows:
"It is with very heavy hearts and much regret that we announce the cancellation of Sonisphere Knebworth 2012.
"Putting the festival together in what is proving to be a very challenging year was more difficult than we anticipated and we have spent the last few months fighting hard to keep Sonisphere in the calendar. Unfortunately circumstances have dictated that we would be unable to run the festival to a standard that both the artists and that Sonisphere’s audience would rightly expect. More...

Although it wasn't expected until December, the organizers of Australia's Soundwave Festival have made their second band announcement. Joining the 60 bands already announced are Staind, Wednesday 13, Unearth, Cathedral, Shadows Fall, Heaven Shall Burn, Your Demise, Kittie, and 14 other (mostly non-metal) bands.
Hole has pulled out of the festival after frontwoman Courtney Love refused to play before Limp Bizkit. Soundwave boss AJ Maddah said on Twitter that he was "relieved we got the moody old cow off the bill. [There’s] no point talking her back, only for her to cancel later, or turn up & act like a rotten twat to other artists, fans, etc."
A third announcement in early December will add another five bands to the lineup, and Danzig is one of the confirmed possibilities. More...
