In an interview with Metalsucks, bassist Troy Sanders described it as "a rock kind of Count Chocula-meets-Deep Purple thing." Hopefully, that means it's awesome, and with Mastodon that's a safe bet." Slayer Frontman Explains U.A. Trivium Slot
In a recent interview with Thrash Hits, Slayer frontman Tom Araya explained why more established acts like Trivium and Mastodon were being given slots on the Unholy Alliance tour instead of younger groups. An excerpt from the conversation is as follows:
Q: Some people would say that you, Slayer, are in a position to give smaller bands much-needed exposure by taking them on tour with you, rather than taking Trivium and Mastodon out who are already established.
A: "I hate to say this, but at this stage of the game, for as many years as we’ve been out as a band, it’s about income. When it comes to having a band who you would love to give exposure to, in all honesty, you would have to be really wowed by that band. I can honestly say that there’s only been one other band in recent times that has done that for us, and that’s SYSTEM OF A DOWN. Nobody knew them, but we heard them and we were like ‘Fuck! Let’s take these guys out on the road’. And look what happened."

Rockstar Mayhem Tour Cancels Sacremento Show
The promoters of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem tour have posted the following message:
"Due to Northern California wild-fires, July 11th (Sacramento) Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival Performance Rescheduled to Monday July 14th
"Concerned for the health and safety of our patrons, performers and employees, Live Nation announces a date change for Sacramento's scheduled Rockstar Energy Mayhem festival at The Sleep Train Amphitheater. The air quality and temperature are expected to improve by end of weekend, allowing for the event to be moved to Monday, July 14th and show time will remain 1:30pm. Tickets purchased for Friday, July 11th will be honored.
"As we enter the second week of wild fires, and the recent 100+ degree temperatures, it is in the best interest of all involved that the tour date be rescheduled as conditions are expected to improve over the weekend. A variety of city and county officials have urged area residents to avoid long-term exposure to the outdoors and limit outdoor recreational activities."
"We sincerely regret this unavoidable cancellation and apologize to fans for any disappointment caused," says tour co-founder John Reese. "And while we're thankful that the show can take place on Monday, our thoughts are with the families in this area during this difficult time. Refunds will be available at original point of purchase." Bonnaroo A Success Despite No Sell-Out
Billboard.com reports: An ambitious lineup helped the seventh Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival overcome inflated gas prices and a more crowded North American festival scene to post attendance of more than 70,000. The festival ran June 12-15 on a 750-acre rural site about 60 miles south of Nashville.
That's shy of a Bonnaroo sellout of 80,000, but enough to please festival producers A.C. Entertainment and Superfly Presents. "Our sales are a little bit off, but not really what a lot of other people seem to be experiencing," says Ashley Capps, president of Knoxville, Tenn.-based A.C. Entertainment. "We feel very, very lucky."
Logistically, Bonnaroo ran smoothly, with intense heat countered by sporadic rain. Local law authorities reported fewer arrests and there were no deaths this year.
"It's becoming almost a cliche, but every year surpasses the last in some really tangible way," says Capps. "I don't want it to sound in any way like we're resting our laurels, but it really had all the characteristics of a finely tuned machine and it was thrilling to see that in action."

Mastodon, Neurosis Discuss Heavy Metal In Baghdad
After tomorrow, Middle Eastern relations will never be the same. No, the U.S. military is not gonna carpetbomb Iran (at least, we don’t think they will), there’s still no end in sight for soldiers stationed in Iraq and Israel’s definitely not signing a peace treaty with the Palestinians. Still, it will be a historic day for fans of Iraqi heavy metal since the film “Heavy Metal in Baghdad” will go on sale. An insightful, funny and emotional documentary film that follows the Iraqi band Acrassicauda from the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003 to the present day, “Heavy Metal in Baghdad” is both a testament to endurance and an affirmation of the strength of the human spirit.
“Heavy Metal in Baghdad” premiered at the 2007 Toronto Film Festival and was an official selection of the 2008 SXSW Film Festival, the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival and was screened at the 2008 New York Underground Film Festival. The movie was hailed by Newsweek, The LA Times and the New York Times, which said it was, “both a stirring testament to the plight of cultural expression in Baghdad and a striking report on the refugee scene in Syria” and added “this rock-doc, like no other, electrifies its genre and redefines headbanging as an act of hard-core courage.”
Videos of members of Mastodon and Neurosis discussing the film can be viewed here.

Fans Make Dragonforce "Rockumentary"
Three fans with a handheld video camera documented their trip to see Dragonforce in Houston, TX. The resulting “rockumentary” is portrait of adolesence and fandom. You probably don’t need to watch more than a few seconds of this to get the idea, but the point at 5:42 where one kid shows us “the hand that touched Herman Li” and another excitedly details how keyboardist Vadim Pruzhanov wrapped his arm around his shoulders is AMAZING. The "rockumentary" can be found entitled "On Fandom" at the following location: http://www.thedeciblog.com/ More...
Mastodon Talks About New Album
Billboard.com reports: Mastodon is five songs into its next Warner Bros. studio album, which the group is recording in its Atlanta hometown with producer Brendan O'Brien.
Drummer Brann Dailor tells Billboard.com that so far, "everything sounds real creepy and spaced out and different." He's particularly enthused about a 15-minute jam dubbed "The Last Baron," which happily, O'Brien had no interest in making shorter or changing.
"There's so many toys to play with over at his studio, like pipe organs and all this crazy sh*t," says Dailor, who was introduced to O'Brien through Bruce Springsteen drummer Max Weinberg (his son is a big Mastodon fan). "There are little cool things we're going to do to the record that we've been wanting to do for a long time."
Dailor promises the as-yet-untitled album, which should be out before the end of the year, will have the conceptual feel of prior releases "Leviathan" (based around "water") and "Blood Mountain" ("earth"), but he's not ready to get specific just yet.
"I think a lot of people didn't realize 'Blood Mountain' was a concept record," he says. "We made up our own story again this time, but we may try to make it a little more evident that that's what's going on. I like to keep them speculating on our message board. There's no possible way they could guess this."
As previously reported, Mastodon will be touring Europe on the Unholy Alliance tour late this year with Slayer and Trivium. Initial tour dates were just revelaed here.
