The Obsessed came to Austin to play the Dirty Dog Bar after over a twenty-year hiatus. The group last released “The Church Within” in 1994, but their fans haven’t forgotten the band. Even without the exposure, their singer/guitarist, Scott “Wino” Weinrich has made numerous treks through Texas and his hailed as one of the true greats in the doom field. He is one of the most active and talented musicians in the doom scene and has played Austin with several other bands including his solo project, doom icons Saint Vitus, and most recently with Spirit Caravan, a group that he spawned out of The Obsessed. Now, two-thirds of The Obsessed consist of Spirit Caravan members. More...
Relapse Records is extremely proud to announce the signing of legendary hard rock / doom metal band The Obsessed. Formed in 1976 by Scott "Wino" Weinrich (Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan, Shrinebuilder, Probot etc.), the band recently reformed and is on the road now.
The Obsessed will enter the studio this summer to record the follow-up to 1994's seminal classic, "The Church Within." Scott "Wino" Weinrich commented on the signing and reformation of the band:
"The time is now for rebirth of The Obsessed. Fueled with the anger, wisdom and energy of all things past, this monumental achievement is the culmination of many years of dogged determination and the belief in the music. This music that we and many others find healing and inspirational.
"At last it sees the light, uncompromising and laden with passion and intensity that we'll immortalize on our new album. We're happy to officially announce our signing with Relapse Records. They also believe in the music and are very understanding of our integrity, vision and aspirations. On tour right now in the USA, we are celebrating this experience with glorious sound. Join us on this golden road. Thanks to all who believe!" More...

The long-anticipated trek will run through two dozen cities, coming to a close on June 11th in Atlanta, Georgia. Additional support will be provided by The Atomic Bitchwax and Karma To Burn.
Forged in 1976 in Maryland and led by the inimitable Scott "Wino" Weinrich (who'd go on to front Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan, Place Of Skulls, The Hidden Hand, and more), The Obsessed weathered various lineup shifts and an on-again-off-again status over the course of a winding, forty-year history.
The band is currently writing material and will hit the studio immediately after the tour for an as-yet-untitled new full-length set for an Autumn 2016 release.

New Jersey's power trio The Atomic Bitchwax has announced U.S. tour dates in support of latest album, "Gravitron."
The month-long tour will kick off on May 13th in Washington, DC, running through June 11th in Atlanta, GA. Joining The Atomic Bitchwax will be The Obsessed and Karma to Burn.
Filled with gargantuan riffs and jaw-dropping psych sonics, The Atomic Bitchwax's latest album, "Gravitron," was released last April via Tee Pee Records. See the band live on these upcoming tour dates: More...
Karma To Burn will hit the road this spring with The Obsessed and The Atomic Bitchwax. The tour starts May 13th in Washington, DC and runs through June 11th in Atlanta, GA, with a complete list of dates available below. Karma To Burn commented on the upcoming tour:
"What better way to follow a full European tour than following The Obsessed and Atomic Bitchwax around America? How about a month off in Sardinia, followed by a year living in the Netherlands. As much as we would like that, we should do the tour, it's only our second full U.S. tour in 5 years, so we're a bit overdue in our own country.
"The stacked lineup and extensive schedule should make up for our absence. The Obsessed... Wino... the demi-god of DOOM... we couldn't pick a better U.S. band to support. But honestly we're most excited about the burritos and burgers. See you on the road." More...
Biker metal, doom metal, stoner metal... whatever metal subgenre in which you wish to place him, Scott "Wino" Weinrich has been at the forefront of it for over thirty years.
The unmistakable rasp of his vocals and thick, fuzzy Gibson guitar tone have spearheaded bands ranging from Saint Vitus to Spirit Caravan to Probot, but for many his crowning achievement (and most accessible) was "The Church Within," the last album he created with his first band, The Obsessed.
Originally released via Columbia in 1994, "The Church Within is being reissued by Real Gone Music on CD and double 180-gram gatefold vinyl with two bonus tracks -- the single, "Mental Kingdom," and the unreleased number, "Melancholy Grey" -- added photos, the original album art with lyrics and a new note from Wino himself. The fourth annual installment of the The Power Of The Riff festival in Los Angeles is now just a week away, the event including a pre-party on Friday, August 9th at The Echo and two-stage, full-day lineup Saturday, August 10th, at both The Echo and Echoplex.
Amidst the massive roster of crushing newcomer acts and classic heavyweights set to execute sets over the two-day fest, one of the main headlining performances of the weekend will be the original lineup of LA crossover act Final Conflict - founder Jeff Harp, vocalist Ron Martinez and bassist Warren Renfrow (Manic Hispanic, Cadillac Tramps) - for the first time in 24 years.
In the 1980s, Final Conflict was part of the first wave of punk bands to be labeled "crossover," with a sonic mix of Discharge meeting Black Sabbath coupled with political lyrics the appropriate soundtrack to inspire a troublemaker to slam, headbang, or throw a brick at a cop... and sometimes all three.
The band will perform 1987's "Ashes To Ashes" LP in sequence as well as early demo material. Although older, the band has no intentions of “phoning it in” - expect a brutal and energetic set.
Additional headlining acts The Obsessed, M.D.C., From Ashes Rise, Black Breath, Iceburn, and others join more than twenty additional bands including Early Graves, Mammoth Grinder, Bastard Noise, Dead in the Dirt, and tons more taking part in the melee. The lineup is:
Friday, August 9th @ The Echo // pre-party:
Black Breath, Early Graves, Obliterations, Nomads, Creative Adult
Saturday, August 10th @ The Echo & Echoplex
The Obsessed, Final Conflict, From Ashes Rise, M.D.C., Iceburn, Iron Lung, Mammoth Grinder, Bastard Noise, Condition, Dead In The Dirt, Baptists, Replica, Completed Exposition, Centuries, Wartorn, Territory, Whip Hand, Children Of God, Old Wounds, Opposition Rising
The 2013 installment of the The Power Of The Riff festival in Los Angeles is right around the corner, this being the fourth annual occurrence of the massive event. It will take place August 9th & 10th 2013 at The Echo & Echoplex, and the lineup is available below. The following press release was also issued about the fest:
"Curated and organized by Greg Anderson and Sam James Velde, The Power Of The Riff honors fans and musicians of all ages from within all walks and lifestyles under the umbrella of the heavy music underground. Tapping into a lineup that represents forefathers, milestones and current touring acts, while shedding light on up and coming bands and local acts, The Power Of The Riff festival is an all-day, all-ages event. The festival also includes an on-location record swap-meet of local stores and features pop-up stores by independent record labels and vendors, DJ sets between performances, a gourmet food truck court with some of Los Angeles' best purveyors of street food dining, and more.
"The fourth annual The Power Of The Riff is spreading it's wings a bit more this time around, this year adding a pre-party on Friday, August 9th at The Echo. The massive full-day lineup the next day, Saturday, August 10th, at both The Echo and Echoplex, offers another stellar lineup of classic heavyweights, and crushing newcomers. The combined events offer 26 bands in total." More...
