Exodus, Exumer & Hirax Invade Islington
When it comes to metal's many sub-genres, thrash metal may well be the most exciting. Inspired by punk, it took the speed and aggression of the genre and mixed it with the intricacies of metal, becoming something which could switch between serious and fun easily, and with the energy contained in the music, it's almost a sonic fountain of youth. If ever there was a band that took the aggression and fun of thrash to the extreme, it was the Bay Area's own Exodus. Founded back in 1979 by guitarist Kirk Hammett and drummer Tom Hunting, along with Keith Stewart and Tim Agnello, the band became legendary in the iconic California thrash scene and their debut, "Bonded By Blood," is an unquestionable classic. They've released a further ten albums since then, along with live releases and lineup shake ups but in 2024, they're as strong as ever. With the release of their new live record, "British Disaster: The Battle of '89 (Live at the Astoria)," it seemed like the perfect time to see them once more in London, this time with some very special guests.
Opening the show tonight was fellow Bay Area thrashers Hirax. On a personal note, I've waited literally half of my life to see Hirax, so expectations were high. I'm glad to report that expectations weren't just met, they were exceeded. Still led by vocalist Katon de Pena (although fans of both bands will know that there was a brief period where former Exodus vocalist Paul Baloff fronted the group,) the singer is still in magnificent form, belting out old favourites such as "The Plague" and "Warlords Command" with sheer ferocity. The rest of the band are playing to their fullest too, keeping the songs sounding fresh and fierce and the crowd were into every minute of it.
Katon endeared himself to the London faithful, continuously engaging with them, while also trying to get as many songs in as possible since the doors opened later than scheduled. New songs "Drill Into The Brain," "Drowned Bodies" and "Faster Than Death" all sounded excellent and easily on par with the best tracks of their career. Hirax promised to come back to London with a longer set and I can't wait for them to do so, because this was so much fun from start to finish and maybe if I'm really lucky, they'll play "Unleash The Dogs Of War" then too. Exumer Posts New Music Video Online
Last month, legendary multinational thrash metallers Exumer released their fifth full-length, "Hostile Defiance," via Metal Blade Records. The album hit the German album charts on position 42 which marks the highest chart entry in the history of the band! Exumer has now launched a video for their latest hit single, "King's End"! Please check it out below.
The idea behind Exumer's new video clip "King's End" is to visually pay homage to the look and visual aesthetics of the MTV/Headbanger's Ball era clips from the late 80s and early 90s. Especially when CGI became available as a tool to add effects that were otherwise financially impossible to obtain. The clip was entirely shot, edited and directed by Goreminister in Essen (Turock Club)/Germany during Exumer's last European dates.
Exumer singer Mem V. Stein: "We were approached by our buddy Goreminister, who has his own You Tube channel and is a pretty known character in the Metal scene in and around Essen, if we would be interested in a new video that resembles old Headbanger's Ball clips. We instantly were on board with the concept and are now excited to launch something that uniquely resembles the early 90s over the top videos we devoured back when Metal was still on Television." Exumer Posts New Song Online
On April 5th, legendary multinational thrash metallers Exumer will release their fifth full-length, "Hostile Defiance," via Metal Blade Records.
"Hostile Defiance" is exactly what its title suggests. A 42-minute full on attack, the thrash faction hold nothing back as they unleash hell as only they can, yet with more variety and dynamics than ever before. "We wanted to sonically progress, incorporating more melodic elements in the music as well as more rhythmic variety," states vocalist Mem Von Stein. "We are a lot braver trying to create an up to date and relevant sound that can easily stand alone in today's thrash landscape without sounding trite or a throwback, and we're challenging the listener not to get too comfortable with one specific feel, tempo or pace."
For a preview of the album, the new single, "King's End", can be heard below.
Vocalist Mem V. Stein comments: "'King's End' is a perfect example for what we set out to accomplish with this album. Keep the fury, speed and aggression of our previous albums but infuse melody with the vocals and guitars in order to expand the musical scope of our sound. Still no compromises and full on thrash but with more variety and vigor." More...

Ready to unleash fourth album, "The Raging Tides," on January 29th worldwide via Metal Blade Records, the German thrash metallers from Exumer have launched a new track online titled "Catatonic."
Vocalist Mem von Stein comments: "We wanted to display the entire scope of our thrash and traditional heavy metal roots on the new album. 'Catatonic' is a prime example when we used a mid-tempo track, on an otherwise fast-paced record, to sonically create some variety without losing any momentum."

Recorded with producer/engineer Waldemar Soychta at Waldstreet Sound in Dortmund, Germany, "The Raging Tides" is a deliberate and violent thrash attack that stays true to the band's 30 year legacy. The track listing is as follows: More...

Exumer Reveals New Album Details
German thrash metal band Exumer has announced "The Raging Tides" as the band's upcoming fourth full-length, set to be released January 29th via Metal Blade Records. Listen in to the title track below.
Recorded with producer/engineer Waldemar Soychta at Waldstreet Sound in Dortmund, Germany, "The Raging Tides" is a deliberate and violent thrash attack that stays true to the band's 30 year legacy.
Conceptually and lyrically, vocalist Mem V. Stein has based the bulk of the record around human suffering - specifically "caused by torture or other means for political, religious, or personal gain for the individuals/organizations who inflict the pain," Stein asserts. Inspired by a wide range of books and articles, the title of the album itself, according to Stein, "represents the ebb and flow of human misery and despair around the globe."

3. Catatonic

5. Welcome To Hellfire

Exumer Recording New Album
The German thrash masters from Exumer will enter the studio in Dortmund, Germany on October 19 to record the follow-up to "Fire & Damnation," which was released worldwide via Metal Blade Records in 2012.
The band will once again team up with producer Waldemar Sorychta (Sodom, Moonspell, Grip Inc., Tiamat, etc.), who had produced the Exumer comeback album in 2011. Vocalist Mem V. Stein comments:
"We take our time to record/release our records in order to deliver the most exciting and quality products for our fans. We are fortunate enough that Metal Blade gives us the space, time and freedom we need to write the album we believe will advance the band the most. Having Waldemar back with us in the studio to produce the new record is such a huge plus, since he did a fantastic job on the last production. Anyone who liked our two records from the 1980s or our last album will not be disappointed with this new one as it delivers our signature brand of fast and aggressive thrash metal."
Exumer's new album is set to be released via Metal Blade Records in early 2016, and marks the 4th output in the band's 30 year history. Stay tuned for more details coming soon! Catch the band live on these dates: More...

Exumer Drops Off Slaughterfest European Tour
German thrash act Exumer has dropped off the upcoming Slaughterfest Tour in Europe with Onslaught, MPire of Evil and Master, citing logistical reasons as the cause.
The announcement reads:
"The logistical circumstances that preceded this tour made it impossible to commit to the tour, even if it meant giving up our co/ headlining spot on the bill. We are just as disappointed as everyone else who wanted to check out this killer tour package but we had to make a decision and as difficult it was, we opted to pull out of the tour. Anyone who has seen us live in the past knows that we try to play energetic and exciting shows possible. Unfortunately, the logistical problems surrounding the tour would've made it impossible to guarantee the fans a 100% of what we are capable of and to deliver what they expect every night.
"We refuse to shortchange our fans and ultimately tarnish the EXUMER brand just for some profit. Our withdraw[al] from the tour has nothing to do with the rest of the bands on the tour package and we wish them a great run with loads of success, as we have nothing but respect for each of the remaining bands on the bill.
"We will do our best to put together a string of shows in Europe next year to make up for this cancellation and ask for everyone to consider our apologies and hopefully see you at one of the next Exumer shows!!"
The tour will proceed with the remaining acts, beginning on October 9th in the U.K. (see dates here). More...
Exumer Announces Lineup Change
German thrashers Exumer have parted ways with guitarist H.K., who played his last show at the Bang Your Festival in Germany on July 13. The guitarist's departure has been an amicable one and has left for solely personal reasons.
Vocalist Mem V. Stein commented: “We were sad to let H.K. go after touring with him for the past three years and recording our comeback album in 2011. However, the thrashing must go on and we already have found a session guitarists who will accompany us to South and North America for our upcoming tour dates there. We will try our best to fulfill all our touring obligations and find a permanent 2nd guitarist as soon as possible to ensure a band chemistry that will take Exumer to the next level.”

We want to give fans the opportunity to check us out in an memorable event that people will talk about for some time to come."
