Metalsucks.net's South By South Death showcase featured guitar shredders. Tech death bands Archspire and Allegaeon were in full force, but before they hammered out their first blast beats, a different kind of shredder took the stage. Myrone is a one-man guitar virtuoso hailing out of Los Angeles, California. The sole member of Myrone was similar to Buckethead in that he wore a mask. Many of the long notes he held was reminiscent of Joe Satriani. He later admitted to me that Satriani is a major influence. He played his guitar over top of ‘80s style keyboard samples, which were part of a soundtrack to a video game.
Metal bands at SXSW and metal showcases have been released to the public. The Dirty Dog Bar is a major player at this year's festivities. Both Metalsucks.net's South By South Death and Metal Injection's showcases will take place in this venue. Saturday offers three big shows and a chance to see some bands such as The Skull and Goatsnake twice. More...

Boston's Elder brings more doom with the release of its sophomore LP "Dead Roots Stirring." The follow up to their self-titled debut, "Dead Roots Stirring" drops on October 25th through MeteorCity Records. Recorded in in Williamsburg, Massachusetts at Black Coffee Sound Studios (Black Pyramid, etc.) with Justin Pizzoferrero (Witch, Sonic Youth), "Dead Roots Stirring" is recommended for fans of High on Fire, Kyuss and Sleep.
"Dead Roots Stirring' is not about down-tuning or as much fuzz as possible, it's about evoking the sort of heaviness that comes from dynamism, feeling and well-crafted melodies," said ELDER guitarist / vocalist Nick DiSalvo. "We're extremely excited to finally bring new material to light after such a long break."
The track listing for Elder's "Dead Roots Stirring" is as follows:
2.) Dead Roots Stirring
4.) The End
