Sarke, Tom Gabriel Warrior Join Forces At Wacken

Norway's Sarke, featuring Nocturno Culto (Darkthrone) and Sarke (Tulus, Khold), will be joined by legendary Tom Gabriel Warrior (Triptykon, ex-Celtic Frost and Hellhammer) for their performance on this year's Wacken Open Air. Together, they will perform the Celtic Frost classic "Dethroned Emperor."

The Sarke band comments: "We are all massive fans of Tom and his music, and we are honored to share the stage with him at Wacken!"

Tom Gabriel Warrior adds: "It's an honor and a privilege to be invited to appear onstage with Sarke, a group whose line-up doesn't only contain personal friends but also musicians I respect deeply. We shall make our appearance at Wacken a truly special event!"

Since the recording of their debut album, "Vorunah," Sarke has grown to become a real band, and the live line-up is now officially part of the band. Sarke's line-up is completed with Asgeir Mickelson (Spiral Architect, Thornbound, ex-Borknagar), Cyrus (Susperia) and Anders Hunstad (El Caco, Autopulver, Morten Abel). Susperia Vocalist Set To Return At Steinkjer Fest

Athera (Pål Mathiesen), vocalist for Norwegian thrashers SUSPERIA, is set to return to the stage at the Steinkjer Festival in Norway on Friday, June 26, 2009. The singer, who earlier this year suffered a heart attack that resulted in major open heart surgery, has made a rapid recovery and doctors have now given him the go ahead to make his comeback.

Athera recently gave his first interview since the heart attack to Belgium's Metal Nose. Talking about his new perspective on life he said, "I haven't seen the light or anything but things are certainly different. I would never ever dare to touch any kind of drugs anymore and I don't understand now how people can pull smoke into their lungs and stuff like that, even though I used to love it. I guess you must go through something like this to realize the dangers and insanity of some of the bad things in life." You can read that full interview here.

SUSPERIA's fifth studio album, "Attitude," was released last month via Candlelight Records, entering the official Norwegian Album Charts at position No. 28, whilst in the USA it was the No. 3 most added album on specialist Rock Radio Playlists. "Attitude" is the band's debut for the Candlelight label and features guest appearances from Chuck Billy (Testament) and Shagrath (Dimmu Borgir). Recording took place at Strand Studio and Studio Cyrus, Norway, with the mix being completed at Studio Fredman in Sweden by Henrik Udd and Fredrik Nordstrom (Dimmu Borgir, Arch Enemy, Opeth).

Susperia Issues Tour Recap

Susperia has issued the following post-tour update:

"We're back from the UK tour and the madness of being on the road is at an end. Thanks to all you metal heads who helped us kick ass!! A most enjoyable experience to once again see the Susperia hordes showing their support. It was good to see old friends and also to get some new fans on board. Our touring buddies - Breed 77, Illuminatus and Sworn Amongst - were all top class guys and a joy to be on the road with.

"As always none of this is possible without the guys behind the scenes keeping the whole circus on the road. So big thanks to our crew Dave, Solj, Daz and Martin for suffering the whims and stresses that we put you through - we do appreciate what you do. We have to give a special mention to Bernt Fjellestad who made the tour possible. He did an excellent job standing in for Athera on vocals at short notice. Thanks Bernt we really appreciate it. Athera will be back soon, so keep checking in."

Susperia Vocalist Has Successful Heart Surgery

Susperia has issued the following update about their vocalist undergoing open heart surgery:

"Despite further complications SUSPERIA singer Athera (Pal Mathiesen) successfully underwent open heart surgery on Monday 16th March 2009 at Rikshospitalet University Hospital, Oslo, Norway. Originally scheduled to have a triple by pass operation, surgeons discovered further problems which resulted in the vocalist also having a main artery - which previously ran to his lungs - connected directly to his heart. Athera will remain in hospital to recuperate and has been advised by doctors that full recovery will take between three and five months.

"Still in some agony from his ordeal and in reflective mood, Athera said: "Wow - Well what happened there!! It looks like this time my name wasn't on the guest list at the pearly gates or the other place down below. I got through the surgery and I'm now back in the regional hospital after five days at the specialist heart clinic. Here in my hospital bed I'm contemplating the enormity of what happened - the what if's and the what might have been. I'm in agony but the strong medication helps. It was a heavy operation having my body parts re-arranged - If a musician ever needed a "TUNE UP" I hope this was it. There are some tough times ahead but I will get there in the end." More...

Susperia Vocalist To Undergo Open Heart Surgery

SUSPERIA vocalist Athera (Pal Mathieson) remains under close observation at Akershus Universitetssykehus Hospital in Lørenskog, Norway following his heart attack last week. The singer has been diagnosed with a previously undetected genetic disorder that will require the replacement of three narrowed arteries and three heart valves. He will undergo a triple heart by-pass operation through open heart surgery today, on Monday, March 16th 2009. Meanwhile the singer is being kept on heavy doses of medication to keep his blood thin and his heart rate down.

Though in a serious, but stable condition, a highly spirited and medicated Athera speaking from his hospital bed sent the following message:

"Hey everyone out there in the metal universe - friends and strangers. Thanks for all your messages of support. I'm lying here in the hospital reading them all and it's really nice to see that so many of you have taken the time to send them. It's overwhelming. I've had a big shock and it's not something I would want anyone to experience. You know, I always wanted to hit the headlines - but not in this way! Looks like the SUSPERIA curse has hit again, a new album and tour on the way and one of us complicates it all. But damn it, we will never let anything stop us - ever! Even if death itself comes knocking and believe me it did. I am undergoing open heart surgery this Monday to replace some broken valves and veins, and then this metal heart will beat once again. The Doc(tor) says I'll be back stronger than ever. I will have to spend a long time in the hospital, but it's not that bad. You should see the nurses taking care of me. Could be worse. Looking forward to getting back up and on the road again. Sorry for the shows that I'm not going to be able to do. I will make it up to you guys. You all make me stronger, I am truly grateful."

Future plans for SUSPERIA remain mixed. However the band has confirmed the postponement of Norwegian dates, which were set for April 09. Their UK tour in May with Breed 77 will go ahead at the insistence of Athera himself. He has urged the band not to let their UK fans down and to look at finding a replacement vocalist.

The release of SUSPERIA's next studio album is still set for early summer as planned, through the band's new label Candlelight Records. Full details will be announced shortly.

"Philadelphia: Candlelight today confirms the worldwide signing of Susperia. Currently finishing work on their fifth album, the band recently announced a string of early spring UK dates that will kick off what is expected to be a busy year for the popular Norwegian metal band. “Ten years and still the same five guys,” exclaims vocalist Athera of the band’s long commitment to their music. “We have worked nearly two years on this material, perfecting it for your pleasure and our devoted fans. It will take you back to the early days with melancholic riffing and dark emotional vocals. It’s a perfect blend of everything Susperia has been and become.”

“A blend of thrash metal drawing on influences that include Sepultura, Anthrax, and Testament,” says Allmusic. com of Susperia’s now highly regarded sound. The popular music portal continues its early 2005 review noting “their songs are melodic yet intense and forceful, and shredding guitars are the rule.” Formed in 1998 by drummer Tjodalv (then of Dimmu Borgir) and guitarist Cyrus (then of Satyricon/Old Man’s Child), the band released their debut, Predominance, via Nuclear Blast in 2001. The band’s much-acclaimed second album, Vindication, followed in 2003. Signing with Norwegian-based Tabu Records (with release in the US via Candlelight Records) in 2004, the band released their third album, Unlimited, later that year. Susperia Drummer Sits Out of European Tour

Norwegian metallers SUSPERIA have suffered a major setback in the run up to their forthcoming European tour with W.A.S.P. later this month and the subsequent UK dates with ONSLAUGHT. The bands drummer Tjodalv has broken his ankle in a freak accident and will have to sit out the dates. The incident happened when he slipped on a patch of ice whilst unloading his vehicle. He was immediately rushed to a local hospital where he was diagnosed with an ankle break in two places, which required an emergency operation. Shattered and dejected Tjoldav is now at home recuperating, with strict orders to rest for at least five months until the breaks heal. The band are devestated at what has happened.

Entombed Added to Onslaught, Susperia London Gig

Long-running Swedish metallers ENTOMBED have been added to the May 7 concert at the Underworld in London, England featuring ONSLAUGHT and SUSPERIA.

ENTOMBED will release its new album, "Serpent Saints – The Ten Amendments", in Germany on July 13 through Threeman Recordings via a special arrangement with Candlelight Records. The 10-song effort will mark the group's first release with drummer Olle Dahlstedt (ALPHA SAFARI, ex-MISERY LOVES CO.), who replaced Peter Stjärnvind in 2006. The band has also scheduled a special showcase gig on May 3 at the Ballroom in Hamburg, Germany. Songtitles set to appear on the new CD include "In the Blood" and "The Dead, The Dying and the Dying to be Dead". Mastering duties will take place at the end of the month with Soren Elofsson at Cosmos Mastering in Stockholm, Sweden.

With regards to the musical direction of the new album, the band previously said, "'Serpents Saints' goes wider and deeper than the 'When In Sodom' EP but it's a pretty good indicator. It's no concept album but an ambitious attempt at creating a solid album with some recurring themes. Almost like the soundtrack to the film with the same name."
