Susperia has issued the following announcement about a temporary live replacement for their vocalist Athera as he recovers from open heart surgery:
"Athera has now left hospital and is back home recuperating. He is working on getting himself back into working order and is aiming to be back on stage soon. We'll keep you updated on his progress.
"Only a few days to go until 'Attitude' hits the stores and we hit the UK for some serious metal madness! We've left it a bit late but we can now tell you that Bernt Fjellestad from the Norwegian band Guardians Of Time will stand in for Athera on the UK tour. We've been rehearsing with him and it's all sounding great. Athera has even been down to rehearsals to give him some tips!"
Susperia has announced that their new album "Attitude" is currently available for pre-order through Candlelight Records. The band issued the following statement about the album:
"The latest album from Susperia strikes with not only power but shines with their unique sense of melody. Featuring guests appearances from Chuck Billy (Testament) and Shagrath (Dimmu Borgir)!"
The track listing will be as follows:
1. The Urge
2. Live My Dream
4. Elegy And Suffering
5. Sick Bastard
6. Another Turn

Susperia has issued the following update about their vocalist undergoing open heart surgery:
"Despite further complications SUSPERIA singer Athera (Pal Mathiesen) successfully underwent open heart surgery on Monday 16th March 2009 at Rikshospitalet University Hospital, Oslo, Norway. Originally scheduled to have a triple by pass operation, surgeons discovered further problems which resulted in the vocalist also having a main artery - which previously ran to his lungs - connected directly to his heart. Athera will remain in hospital to recuperate and has been advised by doctors that full recovery will take between three and five months.
"Still in some agony from his ordeal and in reflective mood, Athera said: "Wow - Well what happened there!! It looks like this time my name wasn't on the guest list at the pearly gates or the other place down below. I got through the surgery and I'm now back in the regional hospital after five days at the specialist heart clinic. Here in my hospital bed I'm contemplating the enormity of what happened - the what if's and the what might have been. I'm in agony but the strong medication helps. It was a heavy operation having my body parts re-arranged - If a musician ever needed a "TUNE UP" I hope this was it. There are some tough times ahead but I will get there in the end." More...
SUSPERIA vocalist Athera (Pal Mathieson) remains under close observation at Akershus Universitetssykehus Hospital in Lørenskog, Norway following his heart attack last week. The singer has been diagnosed with a previously undetected genetic disorder that will require the replacement of three narrowed arteries and three heart valves. He will undergo a triple heart by-pass operation through open heart surgery today, on Monday, March 16th 2009. Meanwhile the singer is being kept on heavy doses of medication to keep his blood thin and his heart rate down.
Though in a serious, but stable condition, a highly spirited and medicated Athera speaking from his hospital bed sent the following message:
"Hey everyone out there in the metal universe - friends and strangers. Thanks for all your messages of support. I'm lying here in the hospital reading them all and it's really nice to see that so many of you have taken the time to send them. It's overwhelming. I've had a big shock and it's not something I would want anyone to experience. You know, I always wanted to hit the headlines - but not in this way! Looks like the SUSPERIA curse has hit again, a new album and tour on the way and one of us complicates it all. But damn it, we will never let anything stop us - ever! Even if death itself comes knocking and believe me it did. I am undergoing open heart surgery this Monday to replace some broken valves and veins, and then this metal heart will beat once again. The Doc(tor) says I'll be back stronger than ever. I will have to spend a long time in the hospital, but it's not that bad. You should see the nurses taking care of me. Could be worse. Looking forward to getting back up and on the road again. Sorry for the shows that I'm not going to be able to do. I will make it up to you guys. You all make me stronger, I am truly grateful."
Future plans for SUSPERIA remain mixed. However the band has confirmed the postponement of Norwegian dates, which were set for April 09. Their UK tour in May with Breed 77 will go ahead at the insistence of Athera himself. He has urged the band not to let their UK fans down and to look at finding a replacement vocalist.
The release of SUSPERIA's next studio album is still set for early summer as planned, through the band's new label Candlelight Records. Full details will be announced shortly.
Athera (Pal Mathieson) - vocalist with Norwegian band SUSPERIA was rushed into Akershus Universitetssykehus Hospital in Lørenskog, Norway on the morning of March 9th suffering from acute stomach pains and heavy bleeding. Initial tests revealed that the singer had suffered a heart attack caused by a damaged blood vessel. Athera is currently in the intensive care unit under close observation, while further tests are carried out. He is expected to remain hospitalized for the foreseeable future. At this moment future plans including touring commitments remain unchanged, until a full diagnosis of his condition has been confirmed.
Athera recently completed vocals on Susperia's fifth studio album, which is due for an early summer release through the band's new label Candlelight Records.
The band worked continuously throughout 2008 on the album which Athera described as "going back to the early days with the melancholic riffing and dark emotional vocals and coming all the way through to today, with a perfect blend of everything Susperia has been and become".
Norway's Chrome Division, featuring Dimmu Borgir's Shagrath has issued the following update about an upcoming live show with Susperia vocalist Athera:
"To all Germans, and all else as well.
"Chrome Division will participate on the Winterfire Festival in Giessen / Hessenhallen the 21th of February. At last they get their asses out of Norway to play. Unfortunately their lead singer Eddie Guz will not attend, but they bring an session vocalist. The very brilliant Athera of Susperia is set to fill the gap. So all Germans and such, you know what to do next weekend."
Candlelight Records has issued the following statement about signing Norwegian band Susperia:
"Philadelphia: Candlelight today confirms the worldwide signing of Susperia. Currently finishing work on their fifth album, the band recently announced a string of early spring UK dates that will kick off what is expected to be a busy year for the popular Norwegian metal band. “Ten years and still the same five guys,” exclaims vocalist Athera of the band’s long commitment to their music. “We have worked nearly two years on this material, perfecting it for your pleasure and our devoted fans. It will take you back to the early days with melancholic riffing and dark emotional vocals. It’s a perfect blend of everything Susperia has been and become.”
“A blend of thrash metal drawing on influences that include Sepultura, Anthrax, and Testament,” says Allmusic. com of Susperia’s now highly regarded sound. The popular music portal continues its early 2005 review noting “their songs are melodic yet intense and forceful, and shredding guitars are the rule.” Formed in 1998 by drummer Tjodalv (then of Dimmu Borgir) and guitarist Cyrus (then of Satyricon/Old Man’s Child), the band released their debut, Predominance, via Nuclear Blast in 2001. The band’s much-acclaimed second album, Vindication, followed in 2003. Signing with Norwegian-based Tabu Records (with release in the US via Candlelight Records) in 2004, the band released their third album, Unlimited, later that year. Brave Words Bloody Knuckles called the album, “a scorcher from start to finish, on par with Testament classic The Gathering.” More...

Due to a recent addition to his family, DIMMU BORGIR guitarist Galder will not be able to do the upcoming North American trek on DANZIG's Blackest Of The Black tour.
States Dimmu Borgir guitarist Silenoz: “We have some new, temporary personnel on this tour. We needed an experienced live guitarist and found him in an old friend of mine and Galder: Cyrus of SUSPERIA. We’re happy he can step in and don’t plan on giving him a hard time on the road.”
Drumming duties on the Blackest Of The Black tour will be handled by Daray (ex-VADER). According to Silenoz, fans can perhaps expect a few surprises when it comes to the set list. Tour dates are below. More...
Due to logistical problems, Norway's SUSPERIA will no longer be part of the EDGUY North American tour, which will launch on Tuesday, September 11 in Hartford, Connecticut. Replacing SUSPERIA on the bill will be Bay Area thrashers LIGHT THIS CITY. The trek will also include Canada's INTO ETERNITY.
Norwegian metallers SUSPERIA have suffered a major setback in the run up to their forthcoming European tour with W.A.S.P. later this month and the subsequent UK dates with ONSLAUGHT. The bands drummer Tjodalv has broken his ankle in a freak accident and will have to sit out the dates. The incident happened when he slipped on a patch of ice whilst unloading his vehicle. He was immediately rushed to a local hospital where he was diagnosed with an ankle break in two places, which required an emergency operation. Shattered and dejected Tjoldav is now at home recuperating, with strict orders to rest for at least five months until the breaks heal. The band are devestated at what has happened.
Susperia have however, confirmed that they will fulfil all their upcoming live commitments and have drafted in Anders Haave from BLOOD RED THRONE as a temporary replacement for the dates.
Long-running Swedish metallers ENTOMBED have been added to the May 7 concert at the Underworld in London, England featuring ONSLAUGHT and SUSPERIA.
ENTOMBED will release its new album, "Serpent Saints – The Ten Amendments", in Germany on July 13 through Threeman Recordings via a special arrangement with Candlelight Records. The 10-song effort will mark the group's first release with drummer Olle Dahlstedt (ALPHA SAFARI, ex-MISERY LOVES CO.), who replaced Peter Stjärnvind in 2006. The band has also scheduled a special showcase gig on May 3 at the Ballroom in Hamburg, Germany. Songtitles set to appear on the new CD include "In the Blood" and "The Dead, The Dying and the Dying to be Dead". Mastering duties will take place at the end of the month with Soren Elofsson at Cosmos Mastering in Stockholm, Sweden.
With regards to the musical direction of the new album, the band previously said, "'Serpents Saints' goes wider and deeper than the 'When In Sodom' EP but it's a pretty good indicator. It's no concept album but an ambitious attempt at creating a solid album with some recurring themes. Almost like the soundtrack to the film with the same name."
Norwegian melodic thrashers SUSPERIA will join US metal gods WASP as “Special Guests” on selected shows of the forthcoming European tour. Some confusion has arisen over which dates the band will play, due to incorrect information being published in certain parts of the media. SUSPERIA will join the Lawless crew on the following dates: More...
