As one of the leading post-hardcore/punk labels in the industry today, WARCON Enterprises has announced that it has signed the forefathers of the genre themselves Helmet. Under the deal, Helmet will release a new album which is slated for early summer 2006 and has confirmed that they will headline this year's Warped Tour.
According to Page Hamilton, founder, songwriter and guitarist for Helmet, several of the album's songs have already been written and Wharton Tiers has been confirmed as the project's co-producer. Tiers recorded the band's first two releases 'Strap It On' and 'Meantime', which sold over a million copies and defined the brusque element of American's underground rock scene.
"Wharton was my only choice to co-produce this project with me," said Hamilton. "I want to get back to my roots with this release and what's really cool is that we are actually using the same tape machine that we recorded our first two albums with. The whole thing is also going to be done in all analog to give it that classic Helmet sound. We're very excited about it."
"I really like what Warcon stands for," he said. "In today's music climate, it's more intriguing to be involved in every aspect of the project. The structure of this deal makes me more of a partner rather than the traditionally signed artist / record deal approach, which for me personally has little value anymore."
Taking a six-year hiatus after releasing their fourth album 'Aftertaste', the band returned in 2004 to release 'Size Matters' and a "best of" CD but it's not until now that Hamilton has decided to go back to the organic sound that they are known for. The sound that actually sparked a new brand of metal that crossed all traditional music boundaries and paved the way for such bands as Chevelle, The Deftones, Silverchair and Norma Jean.
"The first song I ever learned to play on the guitar was a helmet song. I pretty much just tried to figure the songs out and that's how I learned to play basically. Helmet is a band that I have listened to for years and will always enjoy them because they have the sweetest riffs I have ever heard. I love to air drum to them in the car also! I wouldn't be the same without Helmet in my life," said Chris Day, guitarist for Norma Jean. Chi Cheng, bass player for the Deftones, says that he was also influenced by Helmet. "Every band should wish to aspire to the originality and genius of Helmet. An inspitation to fans and musicians-alike."
Helmet's first appearance under the Warcon label will be at this year's SXSW festival where they will perform with fellow label mates Opiate for the Masses, My American Heart, Street Drum Corps and Dir en Grey at the PETA documentary party and the WARCON showcase.
Sitting behind the drums for some of the upcoming shows will be SADUS drummer Jon Allen, who will be filling in for original TESTAMENT drummer Louie Clemente while Louie is busy taking care of other matters. However, both guitarist Alex Skolnick and bassist Greg Christian have signed on for the forthcoming dates, TESTAMENT's manager - Phil Arnold of the Thrill Entertainment Group - told blabbermouth. "We'll do more shows this year, some with Louie some with Johnny Tempesta [HELMET, ex-ROB ZOMBIE, EXODUS]," Arnold said.
On October 11, IRON MAIDEN fans the world over will have something new to get excited about as the newly re-launched Restless Records releases "Numbers from the Beast: An All Star Salute to Iron Maiden", a tribute to the legendary band. The album, which features MAIDEN's own Paul Di'Anno and marks Restless' return to its metal and punk roots, is produced by Grammy award winner and tribute album pioneer Bob Kulick (KISS, METALLICA, AEROSMITH), along with Brett Chassen, and features appearances from current or former members of IRON MAIDEN, KISS, AC/DC, MOTÖRHEAD, ANTHRAX, DIO, JUDAS PRIEST, TESTAMENT, TWISTED SISTER, EXTREME, WHITESNAKE, SLAUGHTER, HELMET, DOKKEN and many others.
"It's a fitting salute to an awesome band and may be the best tribute I've ever produced. I really like what we've done to these amazing songs, and more importantly, the band approves," says Kulick of the album.
"Numbers from the Beast" features 11 classic IRON MAIDEN tunes revamped in honor of the band's 25th anniversary. The final track listing is as follows:
01. Run to the Hills
02. Wasted Years
04. Flight of Icarus
05. Fear of the Dark
06. The Trooper
07. Aces High
08. 2 Minutes to Midnight
09. Can I Play With Madness?
10. The Evil That Men Do
11. The Wickerman
The cover of every official IRON MAIDEN album has featured a zombie called "Eddie." Eddie has been painted by artist Derek Riggs for 20 years. "Numbers from the Beast" cover art was naturally painted by Riggs and is a must-have for any MAIDEN fan.
"Numbers from the Beast" marks the first release on the newly revamped Restless Records. William Hein, current president of Rykodisc and former head of Enigma Records, co-founded Restless in 1985 as a punk and metal sub-label of Enigma. Restless became a stand-alone label after Capitol-EMI acquired Enigma, and was subsequently acquired by Rykodisc in 2003. Now, back with a new sound and logo, Restless returns to its roots with the MAIDEN salute, as well as an upcoming reissue from California punk outfit 45 GRAVE.

Joining Hamilton in the reactivated seminal hard rock act are guitarist Chris Traynor, former WHITE ZOMBIE/TESTAMENT drummer John Tempesta and former ANTHRAX bassist Frank Bello (who has since left the group to rejoin the reunited "classic" lineup of ANTHRAX).

Chevelle is set to headline SnoCore 2005 this year with Helmet, Crossfade, Future Leaders of the World and Strata. The tour begins January 22 in Vail, CO and ends March 13 Orlando, FL.
SnoCore 2005 dates: More...
"We're going to be headlining SnoCore 2005, which starts in January in Vail, Colorado," Chevelle drummer Sam Loeffler said. "The guys who organize it wanted us to be a part, and they wanted our input in who we want on the tour with us. So we're going to be playing with Helmet and Crossfade."
In the time off between ending their trek with Korn and headlining the annual winter tour, Chevelle will spend time in their Chicago studio, where they have a host of projects lined up: re-recording "The Clincher," the second single off their album This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In), and maybe, just maybe, a solo acoustic album by Sam's brother, lead singer Pete Loeffler.
"We're going to be doing a whole lot in our studio. We want to record a live version of 'The Clincher' to send to radio stations along with the album version," Sam Loeffler said. "And Pete is going to do his own record. He's got seven to 10 acoustic songs already written, and it's really cool. Some of them are songs Pete originally wrote as Chevelle songs, but he figured that they'd be better off as intimate acoustic ones."
Sam said that his brother is planning a two-week solo acoustic tour sometime in 2005. But first there's SnoCore, and, of course, shooting a video for "The Clincher," This Type of Thinking's crunching opening tune.
"It's such a big, badass song, so the video has got to be equally badass," Loeffler said. "I've got some ideas for videos, but they're all really expensive. And my ideas always involve running from the cops. Which, actually, might be a really good fit for this song."
Legendary rock producer and musician Bob Kulick (Kiss, Meatloaf) has finished producing an all-star tribute to Iron Maiden in honor of their 25th anniversary. Culling from his extensive contacts in the musician world, Kulick has assembled major hard rock and metal players to come together and put this tribute album together.
All of the tracks have been completed except for two key signature vocalists to come in and finish the job. Kulick has been using the rest of the finished material to shop around for a label to license the masters and put out the hottest Iron Maiden tribute of all time.

Hard rock act Helmet has been forced to push back the start of its first tour in seven years after group leader Page Hamilton broke his collar bone in a mountain biking accident. The trek was due to kick off Sept. 17 in Atlanta but will now get underway in early October. An updated routing is still being finalized.
Hamilton's accident has also necessitated moving the release of Helmet's new Interscope album, "Size Matters," from Sept. 14 to Oct. 5. Tracks from the set can be sampled on Helmet's official Web site.
Beyond Hamilton, the new incarnation of the group features guitarist Chris Traynor, former White Zombie drummer John Tempesta and former Anthrax bassist Frank Bello.
Helmet's last album was 1997's "Aftertaste," which peaked at No. 47 on The Billboard 200 and has sold more than 132,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
