In Central Texas, the weekend that fell on Friday, February 12th through the 14th was filled with great shows featuring major European extreme metal bands, bands that rarely appear in North America. First, I caught Cradle of Filth (visit link) put on a spectacular show at the Aztec Theater in San Antonio. Two days later, the immortal At The Gates made it’s first ever appearance in Austin.
The forerunners of melodic death previously toured North America in 2008 with Darkest Hour and Municipal Waste. Then, they played San Antonio. Due to a publicist error, I couldn’t get into that show, so I partook in other debaucheries. I did, however, catch At The Gates tour twenty-years ago with Morbid Angel and Dissection as the opener. (Readers may have seen them on 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise or Maryland Death Fest).
I didn’t know anything about them. I was there to see Dissection (the only time I caught the band), but liked what I heard and shortly after became a fan of Gothenburg bands. Twenty years later and I can sing all the songs, pump my fest and bang my head with the rest of the packed club at the Mohawk’s punk/metal-friendly club. More...
The Black Dahlia Murder will return to North America this fall to headline the IndieMerch Tour with Iron Reagan, Harm's Way, and Maruta.
The trek will start Oct 3rd and run through October 30th and it marks the group's first official Canadian/U.S/ tour supporting new album, "Abysmal," which comes out on September 18th on Metal Blade Records.
Trevor Strnad (vocals) states: "We are beyond excited to bring this mighty line-up to your Canadian eardrums…what a package! We've combined the grinding holocaust of the reunited Maruta, the sheer rage of hardcore's hellions Harm's Way, the thrashing maelstrom that is Iron Reagan and of course yours truly. No venue shall be left standing in our wake! We'll be playing lots of new tastiness from Abysmal for you, as well as the classics, so bring your friends and get ready to bang your heads off. I am looking forward to drinking a Pils, eating some Poutine and raging out with my friends to the great white north. Fuckin' eh!" More...

"Rust" is the title of the new album from Harm's Way, due out March 10th, 2015. The album was recorded at Brick Top Recordings by Andy Nelson (Weekend Nachos, Dead In The Dirt), mixed at God City Studios by Kurt Ballou (Converge, High On Fire), and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Obituary, Nails). Deathwish Inc. comments on the coming album:
"Opener 'Infestation' stomps with machine-like precision before plunging into a depressing sonic dirge. While songs like 'Law Of The Land,' 'Hope,' 'Cancerous Ways,' and others introduce guitar and electronic driven atmospherics into the arsenal.
"These subtle dynamics bleed into other aspects of 'Rust' as well. Mid-album beast 'Left To Disintegrate' unfurls as an unforgettable anti-anthem ripe with infectious creeping metallic undertones. While 'Amongst The Rust' and 'Turn To Stone' introduce guest vocals from Colin Young (Twitching Tongues) and Emily Jancetic. Both of them adding haunting nuance to the brute force of the band. All of this leads to the epic closer 'Ease My Mind;' a take-no-prisoners aural bludgeoning so heavy that it needs to be heard to be believed."
The track listing is as follows:
02. Law Of The Land
05. Cancerous Ways
06. Amongst The Rust
08. Docile Bodies
09. Turn To Stone
10. Ease My Mind

Chicago outfit Harm's Way will be hitting the studio today to record a yet-to-be-titled new full-length album. The band will spend a week with Andy Nelson at Bricktop Recording and resulting tracks will be mixed by Kurt Ballou at Godcity Studios.
Scheduled for an early 2015 release via Deathwish Inc., this new LP is the follow-up to Harm's Way's monumental back catalog: "Blinded" EP (Deathwish, 2013), "Isolation" LP (Closed Casket, 2011), "No Gods No Masters" EP (Closed Casket, 2010), and the debut "Reality Approaches" LP (OCR, 2009). Deathwish comments:
"This album will showcase Harm's Way at their finest: 10 tracks that are more progressive, more expansive, and more ferocious than ever before.
"Since the band's formation, they'e toured the globe numerous times over and have hit most heavy music festivals in the U.S. and abroad (This Is Hardcore, New England Metal & Hardcore Fest, Fluff Fest, Vlamrock, and more). And by doing so, they've garnered a reputation for some of the most powerful and harrowing live shows in aggressive music today.
"Harm's Way have seen critical acclaim as well, and each album they release has been heavier and more adventurous than its predecessor. Now, Harm's Way have absolutely honed their sound - a mix of metal, hardcore, and industrial - and this new full-length will continue them on this path they've forged for themselves; fueled by vitriol, and stronger than all."
