Finnish Metal Expo 2012 Day One

After being in Finland for a full year now, I once again was able to attend the annual Finnish Metal Expo in Helsinki. A good omen for the weekend was the fact that for the first time in weeks, the weather was not so freezing that my fingers would be tempted to fall off.

Perhaps a difference from last year, that I had noticed immediately was the fact the exhibition itself had shrunk a bit. Less guests, and less retail stands of course means smaller crowds and I wondered just what that would mean for the rather exciting lineup this year, which featured Swallow the Sun, ICS Vortex, Turisas and many more! ICS Vortex Announces First Live Show

Norway’s ICS Vortex, which released the the debut album “Storm Seeker” (reviewed here) in August 2011 via Century Media Records, will be making the band’s live-debut at this weekend’s Finnish Metal Expo in Helsinki. Further details on the expo are available at this location.

The live band’s line-up for the event has now been revealed to be as follows:

ICS Vortex – guitar/vocal
Jens Ryland – guitar
Steinar Gundersen – bass
Baard Kolstad – drums

Former Dimmu Borgir and current Borknagar/Arcturus member ICS Vortex has checked in to comment as follows: “My buddy Asgeir Mickelson recently (and undramatically) handed over the drums to Baard Kolstad. I was not planning on guitar work live, but since Terje Andersen’s duties elsewhere for the second time collided with ICS Vortex, we decided together that it is was best to let go and part as friends.”

ICS Vortex will also be taking part of a special signing session at FME (at the Century Media booth) on Friday, February 17th at 6:15 PM. The stage time for their show is 9:15 PM – 10 PM, just before Paradise Lost and Edguy.

Next to this debut gig at FME, ICS Vortex has also been confirmed as a headlining act on the Farmer Fest 2012 in Bigues i Riells / Barcelona on September 1st, 2012, marking the band’s debut show in Spain. Here are the upcoming shows of ICS Vortex:

ICS Vortex Recruited For God Of Atheists

Asgeir Mickelson has issued the following announcement about recruiting ICS Vortex and Trym for his God Of Atheists band:

"I’m proud to announce that ICS Vortex will be singing for my God Of Atheists project. Drums were recorded by Trym (Emperor, Zyklon, Enslaved), and the rhythm guitars were recorded by me (solos will be done by someone a lot better than me…).

"God Of Atheists is the extreme metal project which I wrote most of the music for in 2008. One song was originally written for Borknagar back in 2004 but was never finished so I rewrote it and it’s now way too brutal for Borknagar’s style. The over all style is kind of 'Norwegian black metal done death metal.' It’s brutal but also very melodic.

"Both Mr. Vortex and I are looking forward to work on this album the upcoming months, and I’m sure Vortex’ awesome vocal style will add a new dimension to the songs. I just need to write some venomous lyrics first… Thankfully there’s a lot of venom in my head…

"And, if you like a project with Trym, Vortex and me, I think you will like the other musicians who’ve agreed to play on it. Exciting times!"

Asgeir Mickelson Comments On New ICS Vortex Album

Asgeir Mickelson (Spiral Architect, Borknagar) has issued the following statement about the release of the new ICS Vortex solo album "Storm Seeker" (reviewed here):

"Finally, the release of 'Storm Seeker.' It's most definitely ICS Vortex' solo album, but it kind of feels like 'my' album too since I not only played drums on it but also co-produced it, edited most of the instruments and vocals, mixed, designed cover and website plus more… I'm definitely NOT trying to steal any of the credits here, but want people to know that it's a lot of work to make an album.

"Someone's got to have talent to write songs, then spend countless hours making them, then get someone to play the songs, get a record deal, record the songs, get cover design, photos etc, then do a zillion interviews and promote the album, get a booking agent, play gigs… So it's really sad when people just download the frikking thing… Someone might think 'It doesn't matter if I download – it's only ONE download.' That's what his neighbour thought too when he downloaded. And then his neighbour… And his… Yeah, you get it.

"'Storm Seeker' is out through Century Media and the album should be available where you ususally buy CDs or digital releases. If you head over to CM Distro you'll see the various formats – Jewelcase CD, digipak CD and LP (black, grey and blue vinyl). If you preordered it you would get a limited edition shirt as well. Get the album through here."

A new song from the album titled "Odin's Tree" is also available for streaming online by heading over to this location.
