A Sound Of Thunder Pays Tribute To Catalonia

A Sound of Thunder has released a metal version of the Catalonian national anthem "Els Segadors (The Reapers)" in the form of an official lyric video whch can be viewed in the player below.

"Els Segadors (The Reapers)" will appear on the band's upcoming seventh studio album "It Was Metal." The song was not originally planned for release ahead of the album, but the band has decided to release the song in light of current events in Catalonia.

Catalonia, an autonomous region in the east of Spain, is currently in the midst of political upheaval surrounding a long-standing independence movement. On October 1, 2017, an independence referendum was held with the support of the Catalonian regional government, despite the Spanish courts' declaration that the referendum was illegal. Massive Spanish police action was taken to close polling places, resulting in violent clashes, with at least 800 people hurt. Of those whose votes could be counted, 90% backed independence. A general strike in Catalonia on Tuesday, October 3rd could bring much of the region to a stand-still, while some observers are expecting Catalonian regional president Carles Puigdemont to make a declaration of independence in the coming hours or days. A Sound Of Thunder Announces New Album

A Sound Of Thunder has announced an upcoming covers album entitled "Who Do You Think We Are?." A Kickstarter campaign was launched and can be accessed at this location.

The band states: "We put every bit of effort into this full-blown studio album as we do into our original albums, and churned out some Thunderized versions of classics by Alice Cooper, Rainbow, Mercyful Fate, Manowar, Tool, Kansas, Black Sabbath, Wrathchild USA, Dio, Dan Fogelberg, and Deep Purple!"

Production for the release was once again handled by the platinum awarded Kevin '131' Gutierrez at Assembly Line Studios, and the band explains "you can expect the same punchy modern production as our previous albums but beefed up with even heavier guitars and some of the best performances we've ever captured."

Recording for the release is complete and was partially funded by "The Lesser Key of Solomon" Kickstarter campaign from 2013. Funds from this new campaign will be used for manufacturing CDs & vinyl, paying the legally required licensing fees for the cover songs, and for new cover art from ASoT painter extraordinaire Dusan Markovic. "Who Do You Think We Are?" is expected for release in late-November or early-December.

Excess funds will be used on several projects that are currently in the works, including bringing the animated Udoroth back! The band explains: "Well, we've started to do just that! Animation is an expensive process, but we feel we have a video script that will be quite simply one of the most metal videos of all time, and that will hopefully allow us to turn Udoroth and the Queen of Hell into an ongoing series."

Metal Bands React To Florida Shooting

Much like after the terrorist attack in Paris at Bataclan, metal bands from around the globe have issued statements in support of the victims of the recent mass shooting in Florida, as well as releasing rainbow-themed merch with profits going towards charities to help the survivors.

The Demoliton Man Tony Dolan, frontman for Venom Inc., has issued the following statement regarding the tragic attack in Orlando at the Pulse night club this weekend:

"Currently we are touring North America again. The diversity of people makes me feel proud to be a citizen of the world in the most amazing countries that have a real pride in who they are and what they stand for! Yet still this terror over religious affiliations exist. We get stopped from playing a shown 'cause we are satanic, but now a murderous spree happens in Florida where innocent people are killed for doing nothing more than being in a land that holds true value on freedom.

"It could be despairing and my heart goes to those dead and their families. Humans create such atrocities but we cannot and must not give in to terror...fear is hiding away....let them feel the wrath of our strength! An eye for an eye...but innocents must not be the target. That would serve to make us like them and WE are more than that." More...

Shadow Woods Metal Fest Announces Lineup

Shadow Woods Metal Fest, the Mid-Atlantic's open air camping metal party, will once again terrorize the woodlands of central Maryland this fall with three days of more than thirty bands from diverse metal genres and regions.

The 2016 festival runs from Thursday, September 15th through Sunday, September 18th at Camp Hidden Valley in White Hall, Maryland.

"The response from performers and attendees to the 2015 event was overwhelmingly positive with many people telling me it was the best weekend of their lives!" says festival founder Mary Spiro of Metallomusikum.com/Shadow Woods Productions LLC. "We are humbled and frankly completely surprised by the outpouring of praise for the fest. There has been enormous interest from the metal community for certain bands to perform. Our team is taking its time to make sure the lineup matches our attendee's expectations and sets us apart from other fests. We also want each day to have flow. It's a balancing act."

Spiro says that when all is said and done, the final lineup will surpass the ferocity of the inaugural installment. As of February 9th, twenty-one bands have been announced, with more still in the works.

"It could be late Spring before we have the whole lineup in hand," Spiro said. "It's taking longer than we anticipated, but we think our patience will be rewarded, and festival goers will be really pleased with the bands yet to be announced." More...

A Sound Of Thunder Makes You "Tremble"

As excitement and anticipation builds for the new release "Tales from the Deadside," D.C. area metal act A Sound Of Thunder has unveiled the new audio track "Tremble." The song can be previewed in its entirety in the player below.

A Sound of Thunder guitarist Josh Schwartz comments: "Tremble is the name of one of the big villains in the Shadowman comics [on which the album is based]; an ancient voodoo spirit inhabiting a human host, spreading fear wherever he goes, and inciting people to do terrible things because of that fear. He's a monster, so we wrote a monstrous song. 'Tremble' is basically music to crush/kill/destroy...heavy groove meets grinding riffs and sinister vocals. Alternatively, if you own a Panzer tank, this is a good song to play when you take to the streets and start crushing cars beneath the treads. We also had a ton of fun recording this one, especially [ASoT vocalist] Nina, whose vocals are infused with black magic, ancient spells, vodka...and just a hint of King Diamondy cheese for good measure. Play it loud; do neck damage."

The band will release "Tales From The Deadside" worldwide via its own Mad Neptune Records on September 25th. More...

A Sound Of Thunder Releases Manowar Cover

D.C. area metal act A Sound of Thunder released a cover of Manowar's "Pleasure Slave," a gender reversal twist with vocalist Nina Osegueda belting out "Man.....be my slave." The song will be made available to Kickstarter backers on the band's ongoing crowd funding campaign for the upcoming new album "Tales From the Deadside," due out on September 25th via the band's very own Mad Neptune Records.

As if Manowar wasn't controversial enough among metal heads, the song "Pleasure Slave," a bonus track from Manowar's sixth album "Kings of Metal," is infamous for its lyrical content. "Joey DeMaio wrote one of the most hilariously sexist songs of all time," stated Osegueda. "And that's cool, but turnabout is fair play. This one's for you, Joey!"

"There is no greater joy than taking a hilariously misogynistic piece of music and turning it upside-down," Osegueda continued. "The composition itself is great, but I always wanted it to be a little faster. The vocals were a challenge, but I had fun using my low register more than usual. As for the background vocals, we had a great time recording a bunch of our male fans making horrible orgasm noises. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my life!"

A Sound of Thunder guitarist Josh Schwartz also commented on the track: "Ironically, this song has probably given me more pleasure over the years than any other. The lyrics are so ridiculously over the top, and Eric Adams delivers them with such conviction, that I can't help but crack up when I hear it...we are talking laughing so hard I'd be in tears sometimes! So full disclosure: we actually love Manowar and embrace their cheese, and just thought it would be fun to turn this one on its head. Our fans paid for the production of this song so we're releasing it for free to the whole world to hopefully spread some smiles and laughter. Hail, kill, and enjoy!"

A Sound Of Thunder Enters The "Tower Of Souls"

Unless you've been living under a rock, D.C. area metal act A Sound of Thunder has been a shining beacon of the U.S. metal scene for the past four years (starting with the explosion of the sophomore record "Out of the Darkness" in 2012). Having released successive albums of higher quality material in each year since ("Time's Arrow" in 2013 and "The Lesser Key Of Solomon" in 2014)...it's no wonder the new album "Tales From the Deadside" will continue that trend. The album is set to drop on September 25th via the band's very own fan backed label Mad Neptune Records.

For the new release, the band shattered another crowdfunding campaign goal, this time in less than 21 hours, proving that the greatest record company of all might very well be the fans themselves. The campaign still runs for another 13 days, so get in on all the perks and stacking rewards at this location.

Today, the band has teamed up with Metal Underground.com to unleash the first full track stream from the Valiant Entertainment flagship comic character Shadowman inspired release - the crushing "Tower of Souls."

"Tower of Souls" is the soundtrack to the first major battle between Shadowman, the hero, and Master Darque, the villain. Master Darque is trapped in a hell-like domain known as the Deadside, but is nearing the culmination of his plan to escape and wage war on the Earth. Only Shadowman has the power to stop Darque's scheme, so Darque recruits Baron Samedi, the voodoo lord of the dead, to keep Shadowman occupied. But Samedi's loyalties are not what they seem: he betrays Darque and clears a path for the final confrontation between Darque and Shadowman. The lyric video features panels straight out of Valiant Entertainment's comic book series.

Guitarist Josh Schwartz comments: "When we wrote the song we wanted to capture the sinister nature of Darque's plot and the huge consequences involved, so we used a lot of sinister and dissonant notes and chord changes. An unrelenting triplet beat drives the song forward and gives it an almost militaristic feel. Hopefully the listener feels that he's right in the middle of an epic battle on the Deadside!" More...

Rainbow Keyboardist Guests For A Sound Of Thunder

Tony Carey (Rainbow, Planet P Project) has recorded keyboards on A Sound of Thunder's cover of Rainbow classic "Death Alley Driver." The track is exclusively available via A Sound of Thunder's current Kickstarter campaign which exploded through its original goal in 21 hours and which runs through August 17th (make your pledge here). A preview of the track can be heard streaming in the player below.

Despite an imposing catalog as a solo artist and with his own Planet P Project, among metal-heads Tony Carey is best known as part of the definitive lineup of Rainbow. Along with Ritchie Blackmore, Ronnie James Dio, Cozy Powell, and Jimmy Bain, Carey performed on the seminal "Rising" and "On Stage" albums. Carey's hair-raising synthesizer notes on "Tarot Woman" and haunting Mellotron chords on "Stargazer" are just some of his highlights on "Rising", an archetypal cornerstone album of melodic and power metal.

"This is a very cool cover of a very cool song, by a very cool band. So that's all cool..." said Carey. "As far as my part goes, I threw down some old-school Hammond and played a much-too-fast solo bit on a Minimoog (remember those?) and woke up on the Sunset Strip in pre-Apocalypse 1976... lots of fun, and not something I do very often. Hollywood Swingin'! Thanks for having me." More...

A Sound Of Thunder Tells "Tales From The Deadside"

D.C. area metal act A Sound of Thunder unveiled details on the upcoming new album "Tales From the Deadside" - along with the crowdfunding campaign links. The band has been one of the most successful crowdfunding acts, having blown away goals for the previous releases "Time's Arrow" (2013) (reviewed here) and "The Lessor Key Of Solomon" (2014) (reviewed here). At press time, the band has already accumulated over 80% of its goal and the link is less than 24 hours old.

"Tales From the Deadside" was once again recorded at Assembly Line Studios with RIAA platinum-awarded producer Kevin '131' Gutierrez (Shinedown, While Heaven Wept, Raven). The album tells the story of Shadowman, one of the flagship characters of Valiant Entertainment's comic book universe. The album is set for release on September 25th.

At the 2013 Baltimore Comic-Con, the band approached comic book publisher Valiant Entertainment with a crazy idea: a heavy metal album about Shadowman. And when they say "approached," the band members mean they literally walked up to the Valiant booth with no warning, put a copy of "Lessor Key of Solomon" on the table and said "we're Valiant fans, and we'd like to make some music about your character!" Hence, "Tales from the Deadside" was born.

The story of Shadowman, his alter-ego Jack Boniface, and the many characters in his world was the inspiration for what the band calls the "best album to date." The story lead A Sound of Thunder to places the music hasn't been before, combining elements of supernatural horror, drama, action and adventure found within the comics. Of course, all of the familiar ASOT elements will be there. The Shadowman's harrowing journey demanded no less! More...

America's Secret Metal Paradise

Most of us in metal love to complain about trolling, irrational vitriol, subgenre tribalism, and elitism online. Not to mention the fact that most of said complaining also takes place online.

It’s like plugging the cord of a power strip into the strip itself and expecting it to produce juice. No wonder nothing positive ever seems to get accomplished.

So how do we fix this?

Well, we can’t. At least we can’t fix others. We can, however, control ourselves and try new things from time to time. And when considering just how ridiculously much time we spend drooling in front of our screens, the simple act of attending live music concerts is indeed a “new thing,” or at least a relatively seldom thing. Sort of like shutting off Facebook and actually writing your best friend a letter.

But don’t the same issues manifest in our local clubs? A package tour comes to town, containing bands with separate (or, at best, overlapping) fanbases, which promptly begin to work against each other. Show me such a concert that isn’t brimming with guys judging each other’s perceived tastes, putting on airs by boasting “I’m only here for [insert obscure opener],” and I’ll show you my fourth nipple.

How about major European-style summer festivals? Don’t get me started. Don’t get me wrong, either; they’re ten tons of fun. But often the numbers are too immense for any type of bonding to occur on a mass scale. Crowds usually just devolve into cliques, all corresponding to their chosen favorite acts.

So there needs to be a middle ground. A unique event, rare and special enough to draw the enthusiastic, but familiar enough to include the curious. Small and precarious enough to forestall any jaded complacency, and large enough to foster a carnival atmosphere.

The musical equivalent of a big group of friends around a campfire, bonded not only by the fun they’re sharing, but also by the knowledge that one bad attitude will douse the good time in cold water.

For me, the DeLand Rock & Metal Festival was that event. And for the moment, it has alleviated some of my cynicism over the much-ballyhooed “brotherhood and sisterhood” concepts thrown around in metal.

Here, in central Florida, from November 7th through the 9th, these bonds were very much alive.

A Sound Of Thunder Premieres "Elijah" Lyric Video

D.C. area metal band A Sound of Thunder has dropped a bombshell of a track for an exclusive premiere right here on Metal Underground.com. The song appears on the upcoming new release "The Lesser Key of Solomon," which will be available on September 9th via Mad Neptune Records.

After a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign for the release of the band's previous effort "Time's Arrow" - the band followed that up with an even bigger crowd-funding success for "The Lesser Key of Solomon," so much so that the band funded the new album, a covers EP and the first tour for the West Coast this November.

"The Lesser Key of Solomon" represents the strongest material for A Sound of Thunder, which sees the band grow in both song writing and progression. Check out our review for the album at this location. One of the finest tracks is "Elijah," a 9 minute 30 second opus that features a new side to versatile vocalist Nina Osegueda's voice as a nod to King Diamond.

We asked Osegueda for her thoughts on the song: "Elijah is the kind of song I dreamed of creating since I first heard King Diamond. I wanted to tell an original story that was twisted and evil, and I wanted to be able to utilize a few different singing styles so it would be challenging. I wrote a short story about the characters to get inside their heads and map out their personalities and objectives. To me, it's more than a song, it's a whole world we're describing within just 10 minutes. I wanted to make sure that world was as colorful and bloody as possible."

Guitarist Josh Schwartz also commented: "'Elijah' is definitely our most ambitious song to date, both musically and lyrically. It's almost a mini-opera. [Vocalist Nina Osegueda] worked incredibly hard on the vocal harmonies on this, not just stacking up three part harmonies, but doubling each part and matching every little nuance from her lead vocal track in her harmony tracks. The result is a massive, lush chorus with a very cinematic feel. The song is going to be challenging for some listeners. There are a lot of tempo changes, unusual harmonies, and a big key change right in the middle of the chorus, but I think our fans will get it." More...
