Formed: 1990
From: Beilen, Netherlands
Last Known Status: Active

God Dethroned was formed by mainman Henri Sattler in 1990. After one demo they released their debut album “The Christhunt” in 1992 on a tiny German label. Due to problems with the other band members and the record company, Henri decided to split the band. He then formed Ministry Of Terror and released the “Fall Of Life” album with them in 1994. After a European tour Henri left the band and re-formed God Dethroned. With new band members and better songs in his back, Henri and the new God Dethroned recorded “The Grand Grimoire” and inked a deal with Metal Blade. Many successful tours followed in Europe, the U.S. and Japan with great Death and Black Metal acts like Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Immortal, and Marduk, just to name a few.

In the meantime most of the renowned festivals were played: Dynamo Open Air, Wacken, Graspop and Summer Breeze. Drummer Roel Sanders left the band after the US tour promoting “Bloody Blasphemy”. Nile’s Tony Laureano played on the “Ravenous” album, but couldn’t stay. Janne from The Crown played on the tour and finally new drummer Ariën van Weesenbeek came in, whose first recording experience with the band was “Into the Lungs of Hell”.

Bassist Beef and guitar player Jens didn’t have the motivation any more to keep on touring and playing, so they decided to call it quits after about 8 years. About 2 months before the recording of “The Lair of the White Worm” bass player Henk joined the band, and 2 weeks before the recording axeman Isaac came in.

God Dethroned Discusses New Album's Concept

GOD DETHRONED's new album, "Passiondale," is a concept album about the battle of Passendale around the city of the same name in World War I.

GOD DETHRONED frontman, Henri Sattler, explains how he came up with the story and the concept:

"It says Passendale on the street sign. The little village with its huge Tyne Cot cemetery and memorial centre. I passed it many times on the way to Isaac (Delahaye, our former guitar player) for another of our notorious drinking sessions in Ypres not far from the French border. I got really impressed by how this town breathes World War I. The numerous cemeteries, the Menin Gate with its daily last post ceremony since 1929 with the exception of just one day during a bombardment in World War II, the buildings that have been rebuilt in their original state and definitely all the English, Irish and Scottish people that visit Ypres every weekend, probably because one of their relatives died there during the war. During the night at the bars & pubs they tended to get really drunk and sang louder than the barman could crank up the stereo set! It’s during these times that I got inspired by the Great War and decided to write a concept album about it. Ypres and Passendale were the center of war activities during the war with around 900,000 casualties compared to 9 million worldwide. I realized how harsh it must have been there during those 4 years. Passchendaele was the official name of the little village during the war, but since the English speaking armies couldn’t pronounce that, they nicknamed it to: Passiondale." More...

Epica Announces New Guitarist, Isaac Delahaye

Dutch gothic metallers, Epica, have announced the addition of Isaac Delahaye (of God Dethroned and Edgecrusher) as their new guitarist to replace Ad Sluijter. Epica have issued the following comments regarding their decision:

"Isaac is no stranger to the band since he already replaced Ad once at a gig in France back in 2003. He also worked with Coen, Yves and Arien on "Project SiC" in 2006, but the most of you will know him from his work with "God Dethroned" in which he also worked with Arien. Isaac is an enormously talented and skilled musician and we think he is the ideal person to fill up Ad's spot and to make Epica's line-up strong and complete again." More...

God Dethroned Frontman Posts Studio Update

God Dethroned frontman Henri Sattler has posted the following studio update:

"Rythm guitars, bass and lead guitars are all finished now. We took some time off from the studio to prepare some new things for us like different bass lines, harmonies and other stuff we haven't done like this before.

"Producer Joerg Uken learned some new things when it came down to my unconventional way of composing harmony lines.
One day we would record a melody line and the harmony just on the clicktrack to put it into the song later.
He goes 'this already sounds out of tune like this and we haven't even put it in the music yet.' I go 'just put it in the music Joerg.' It was nice to see this big questionmark above his head when we checked out the result. It sounded just great.
You can check that out yourself when our album comes out somewhere in April next year. More...

God Dethroned Issues Studio Update

Dutch metallers, God Dethroned, have issued the following studio update:

"Last week we started tracking drum tracks for our new album, 'Passiondale'. With Roel [Sanders] back on the drum throne, all speed limits have been broken again. We took a lot of time in order to get the best results 'cause we want the album to be as tight as possible."

"Producer Jörg Uken from the Soundlodge studios [in Germany] is a drummer himself so we actually managed to get some really spectacular drumming on tape. We also wrote a new song in the studio called 'No Survivors', bringing the total of songs to nine. Yesterday we made some heavy crushing guitar sounds and this week we'll track the guitars." More...

God Dethroned Finishes Writing New Album

Dutch death metal band GOD DETHRONED has finished the songwriting for their upcoming new album.

“We're ready! We finished 8 songs for our new album 'Passiondale.' Those of you who are fans of our 'Bloody Blasphemy' and 'The Lair of the White Worm' albums can take a deep breath now and wait out the time until the album comes out. Cause this motherfucker brings back all the good things you liked so much. Bringing back Roel to the band after all these years was a good idea. His drumming gave us the right vibe to come up with the stuff we needed for so long. We're really happy about the results and we can't wait to start tracking down those songs. We start recording on October 13th in the Soundlodge Studios in Germany.

"The album is a concept album about World War I and the song titles are: ‘Under A Darkening Sky’, ‘Behind Enemy Lines’, ‘Drowning in Mud’, ‘No-Man's Land’, ‘Passiondale’, ‘Poison Fog’, ‘Fallen Empires’ and ‘Artifacts of the Great War’. Stay tuned for more news 'cause we have some more interesting stuff in the works..."

"Passiondale" is to be expected for release in April/May 2009.

God Dethroned Part Ways With Drummer

Guitarist Isaac Delahaye of the Dutch death metal band GOD DETHRONED has issued the following update:

"A little while ago our long time drummer Ariën Van Weesenbeek announced he would join the ranks of Dutch gothic metal rockers EPICA, leaving us no other choice than to let him go. We do understand his career move and we wish him all the best of luck for the future, and we'd like to thank him for all the years of pure blasphemy. We will play a farewell show with Ariën on March 28th at the Mezz club in Breda, Holland."

"At the same time we are happy to announce the return of Roel Sanders, our drummer on the 'Grand Grimoire' and 'Bloody Blasphemy' albums!!! Roel left GOD DETHRONED in the summer of 2000, but this time he's back to stay with us till the end. Some of you may also know him as the drummer for INHUME (and don't worry, he will continue with that band too)." More...

Severe Torture Post Tour Diary From Vader Tour

Severe Torture are currently on tour with Vader and God Dethroned and have been keeping a diary whilst out on the road.

Here's the (lengthy) SEVERE TORTURE tour report so far:

"The tour started out on the 28th of september in Berlin(DE). After hooking up with Vader, God Dethroned and crew we picked our bunks in the nightliner. This bus was going to be our home for 6 weeks and as far as our experience goes, this was the best and biggest bus we ever had! The first show was better than we expected. Turnout was good for a Thursday (200+) and people seemed to like us. It definitely was a perfect start of the tour!

The second day we went to Jena(DE). The venue was great and we spent the afternoon with some sightseeing in the center of the city. Turnout was good again and the audience was wicked as well. The beer tasted very good and both God Dethroned and Vader gave good shows as well. More...
